This book review series presents current trends in modern biotechnology. The aim is to cover all aspects of this interdisciplinary technology where knowledge, methods and expertise are required from chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, chemical engineering and computer science. Volumes are organized topically and provide a comprehensive discussion of developments in the respective field over the past 3-5 years. The series also discusses new discoveries and applications. Special volumes are dedicated to selected topics which focus on new biotechnological products and new processes for their synthesis and purification. In general, special volumes are edited by well-known guest editors. The series editor and publisher will however always be pleased to receive suggestions and supplementary information. Manuscripts are accepted in English.

Paris 1888. Armand and Odilon are young apprentice draughtsmen in the offices of Gustave Eiffel, working on what will be the engineer's greatest invention and the city's most famous landmark. The Eiffel Tower is the symbol of a new age, but in the exotic gas-lit streets of Paris, strange beliefs, dark desires and mysterious forces are loose. Soon Armand and Odilon find themselves involved with a spiritualist society who hold seances in the Paris Morgue, a card-reading clairvoyant, a female ventriloquist with a shady secret and a spirited young actress. Behind them all are the scheming machinations of Gordon Hole, an ambitious American architect who has vowed to destroy the Eiffel Tower before it can even be completed.
The Cold War Era left the major participants, the United States and the former Soviet Union (FSU), with large legacies in terms of both contamination and potential accidents. Facility contamination and environmental degradation, as well as the accident vulnerable facilities and equipment, are a result of weapons development, testing, and production. Although the countries face similar issues from similar activities, important differences in waste management practices make the potential environmental and health risks of more immediate concern in the FSU and Eastern Europe. In the West, most nuclear and chemical waste is stored in known contained locations, while in the East, much of the equivalent material is unconfined, contaminating the environment. In the past decade, the U.S. started to address and remediate these Cold War legacies. Costs have been very high, and the projected cost estimates for total cleanup are still increasing. Currently in Russia, the resources for starting such major activities continue to be unavailable."

Brave and fascinating, as well as important . . . . A scholarly and
comprehensive contribution to our growing knowledge of the history
of homosexuality. Recent years have seen enormous attention devoted to the history of sexuality in the Western world. But how has the West conceived of non-western societies been influenced by these other traditions? The Geography of Perversion and Desire is the first historical study to demonstrate convincingly that the representation cultural otherness, as found in European thought from the Enlightenment through modern times, is closely interrelated with modern constructions of homosexual identity. Travel reports and early ethnographic accounts of cross-gender roles in the Americas, Africa, and Asia corroborated the 18th century construction of the sodomite identity. Similarly, the late 19th-century construction of the third sex provoked much anthropological speculation on to genetic versus societal nature of male-to-male sexual relations, a precursor of current essentialist versus constructionist debates. An invaluable contribution to the ongoing debates on cultural and sexual otherness, this volume unravels how the categories of the modern sodomite and later homosexual were inextricably intertwined with essentialist definitions of racial identity. In encyclopedic detail, Bleys traces how cross-cultural records were collected, created, structured, manipulated, excerpted, reformulated, and omitted in interaction with changing beliefs about male-to-male sexuality. Focusing in such subjects as puritanism, sodomy, and ethnicity in colonial North America; cross-gender behavior and hermaphrodditism; the semiotics of genitalia; andthe parameters of sexual science, The Geography of Perversion and Desire is a breathtakingly thorough, cross cultural history of sexual categories. Drawing on travel reports and early ethnographic accounts, The Geography of Perversion and Desire presents the first historical study to demonstrate convincingly that the representation of cultural otherness, as found in European thought from the Enlightenment to modern times, is closely interrelated with modern constructions of homosexual identity.
The Gender Revolution and New Sexual Health: Celebrating Unlimited Diversity of the Human Sexuality Hypercube deconstructs the gender binary and introduces students to the mathematics of unlimited human sexual diversity. The book bridges academic sexual science and real-world application of knowledge to improve personal satisfaction. It also prepares future healthcare providers, as well as those in other helping professions, to assist clients in a way that helps them increase their own personal comfort, confidence, and knowledge related to gender and sexual health. The text provides students with practical approaches to overcome the various challenges individuals face related to gender and sexuality. The chapters explore topics including sexual literacy, gender dysphoria, the history of sex education, health, and attitudes in the United States, sexual identity and orientation, the health benefits of sexual expression, gender fluidity, and more. The text features questionnaires that can be used to measure personal satisfaction, success stories from the field, and a glossary to assist with new terms and concepts. The Gender Revolution and New Sexual Health is an excellent resource for courses in sexual health, women's health, gender studies, psychology, psychiatry, nursing, counseling, and sociology. |
