A diagnosis of cancer in adolescence occurs at a critical time of
social and interpersonal development. Adolescents are encountering
rapid physical growth, hormonal changes, and a shift from
dependence on parents with associated reliance upon close peer and
dating relationships. These close relationships often involve
increased levels of intimacy and sexuality, and it is in the
context of these relationships that adolescents are developing
important competencies for later relationships in their adult
years. A diagnosis of cancer in adolescence is likely to impact
close relationships, although research in this area is scarce. We
know little about how close relationships may impact critical
aspects of adolescents' lives, such as quality of life,
psychological distress, and health behaviors. The current study was
designed to address these gaps in the literature by providing an
examination of how dimensions of close peer and dating
relationships correspond with ratings of quality of life,
psychological distress, and health-related behaviors among a sample
of adolescents currently on treatment for cancer. In this first
critical study of close peer and dating relationships among
adolescents on active treatment for cancer, Drs. Carpentier and
Mullins examine specific, discrete dimensions of close
relationships (i.e., social support, negative interactions, dating
anxiety, fear of intimacy) that are thought to relate to quality of
life, psychological distress, and health-related behaviors (i.e.,
tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use; sexual risk-taking;
nutrition/physical activity; overweight and dietary behaviors; sun
safety). Results of this study provide an understanding of the
importance ofclose relationships to adolescents' adaptation to
cancer and highlight the need for continued examination of discrete
aspects of close relationships among this presumably vulnerable
population. Adolescents with Cancer is an important book for
collections in adolescent studies, pediatric cancer, and
psychology.

Well-established scholars from a variety of disciplines - including
sociology, anthropology, media and cultural studies, and political
sciences - use the social construction of death and dying to
analyse a wide variety of meaning-making practices in societal
fields such as ethics, politics, media, medicine and family.
These twelve essays analyze the complex pleasures and problems of
engaging with James Joyce for subsequent writers, discussing
Joyce's textual, stylistic, formal, generic, and biographical
influence on an intriguing selection of Irish, British, American,
and postcolonial writers from the 1940s to the twenty-first
century.
The Mediterranean island of Cyprus is the site of enduring
political, military, and economic conflict. This interdisciplinary
collection takes Cyprus as a geographical, cultural and political
point of reference for understanding how conflict is mediated,
represented, reconstructed, experienced, and transformed. Through
methodologically diverse case studies of a wide range of
topics—including public art, urban spaces, and print, broadcast
and digital media—it assembles an impressively multifaceted
perspective, one that provides broad insights into the complex
interplay of culture, conflict, and identity.
Spend a day in France counting the dogs un-deux-trois, taking
Doudou out for a walk, and playing until it's time for bonne nuit.
Author Evelyne Holingue and illustrator Margaux Carpentier draw on
their young lives in France to create an authentic picture of
modern French life.
The capture of sunlight by photosynthetic organisms supplies an
enormous amount of the energy required to develop and sustain life
on the planet, making photosynthesis one of the most important
biological phenomenon on Earth. Updating the popular first edition,
Photosynthesis Research Protocols, Second Edition presents detailed
descriptions of a broad range of general and fundamental methods
that are commonly used by plant biochemists, physiologists, and
molecular biologists, all of which are contributed by leading
researchers in the field. This vital new edition also features
coverage of methods related to the most abundant protein on earth,
Ribulose-1,5-Bisphosphate Carboxylase/Oxygenase. Written in the
highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology (TM) series format,
the chapters of this volume include introductions to their
respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents,
step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and expert
tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Comprehensive
and cutting-edge, Photosynthesis Research Protocols, Second Edition
serves new photosynthesis researchers as well as experienced
scientists seeking to use a new type of preparation or method to
study this tremendously influential process.
This book examines how higher education has contributed to widening
inequalities and might contribute to change. By exploring questions
of access, finance and pedagogy, it considers global higher
education as a space for understanding the promises and pressures
associated with competing demands for economic growth, equity,
sustainability and democracy.
The Challenge of Complexity gathers in one volume over 32 essays by
the esteemed French philosopher and sociologist, Edgar Morin,
probably Frances greatest living public intellectual. The essays
span six decades of his career, addressing topics such as
complexity, sociology, ecology, education, film, biology, and
politics. At his centenary (July 2021), Morin holds honorary
doctorates from over 20 universities in Europe and Latin America,
and recently the Centre dEtudes Transdisciplinaires, Sociologie,
Anthropologie, Histoire, at the Centre National de la Recherche
Scientifique (CNRS), the prestigious French National Research
Center, was renamed the Centre Edgar-Morin. He is also the UNESCO
Chair of Complex Thought. Several university centres and institutes
have been dedicated to advancing his work in Europe and Latin
America. He is the author of more than 80 books, translated into 28
languages, and the 1960 documentary Chronicle of a Summer, which he
co-directed with Jean Rouch, has become a classic and the first
example of cinema verite. Morins work on complexity is distinct
from the mathematically driven science of complexity. He argues for
an epistemological revolution and focuses on the need to develop
complex thought to address the lived complexity of an
interconnected, interdependent, uncertain world. Morins
contribution in such a wide range of disciplines has been
influential because of his ability to bring complex thought to bear
on seemingly diverse topics, reflecting on the limitations of how
they are approached and articulating a transdisciplinary way that
doesnt sacrifice complexity in an effort to find an oversimplified
clarity. Morin illuminates the complexity and creativity of the
world and of our lived experience, and invites us to participate in
the creative process that is existence itself. A substantive
overview of Morins philosophical journey by Alfonso Montuori
introduces the reader to Morins remarkable work and life. And the
work is completed by a substantive Letter from Edgar Morin, putting
his lifes work in the context of recent advances in Science and the
Humanities.
This book is devoted to the theory of legal theory, also referred
to as the "meta-theory of law".The aim of this emerging discipline
is to determine the objectives, aims and methods of legal theory,
and to establish the conditions of possibility as well as the
validity criteria for theoretical discourse on law. The
contributions in this book provide an overview of these aspects
through different perspectives and approaches. The very purpose of
legal theory has been disputed and the subject area is currently
subject to increasing cross-fertilization between different, and
sometimes diverging, traditions. Meta-theory of Law assesses these
emerging trends by questioning two basic objects of legal theory,
the "nature" and the "science" of law.
