Foreign Affairs Critics on the Left have long attacked open markets
and free trade agreements for exploiting the poor and undermining
labor, while those on the Right complain that they unjustly
penalize workers back home. Kimberly Clausing takes on old and new
skeptics in her compelling case that open economies are actually a
force for good. Turning to the data to separate substance from
spin, she shows how international trade makes countries richer,
raises living standards, benefits consumers, and brings nations
together. At a time when borders are closing and the safety of
global supply chains is being thrown into question, she outlines a
clear agenda to manage globalization more effectively, presenting
strategies to equip workers for a modern economy and establish a
better partnership between labor and the business community.
Diamond films grown by activated chemical vapor deposition have
superlative thermal, mechanical, optical, and electronic properties
combined with a very high degree of chemical inertness to most
environments. These properties, together with the ability to
fabricate films and shapes of considerable size, promise an
exciting new material with many applications. Some applications are
on the verge of commercialization but many await a few more
technological developments. Diamond-like films are already employed
in both commercial and military applications. The popular press, as
well as the scientific and technological and industrial
communities, are increasingly interested in the potential for
future development of these materials. Although there are many
technical papers and review articles published, there is no Single
comprehensive introduction to these technologies. The Scientific
Affairs Division of NATO recognized the need and the future
importance of these technologies and authorized an Advanced Study
Institute on diamond and diamond-like films. NATO Advanced Study
Institutes are high level teaching activities at which a carefully
defined subject is presented in a systematic and coherently
structured program. The subject is treated in considerable depth by
lecturers eminent in their fields and of international standing.
The presentations are made to students who are scientists in the
field or who possess an advanced general scientific background.
Focusing on six steps for effective innovation, this volume
presents guidelines for a new worldclass approach for developing
technologies. From technology strategy to concept creation and
selection, the authors cover each innovation activity, taking you
step by step through the effective methods. They provide a clear
focus on robustness development and technology transfer, which
leads to the commercialization activity. Diagrams and case studies
through the text clearly illustrate the concepts. "Effective
Innovation: The Development of Successful Engineering Technologies"
is a comprehensive and invaluable resource. "This book is a 'must'
read for engineers in any organization from the Chief Technology
Officer on down and compelling reading for the lead innovators in
an organization. The authors describe the comprehensive framework
of the most powerful methods to help organizations their
management, innovators and inventors to 'leap frog' to superior
technical innovation capabilities and results." - James R Norton,
Managing Director, BLN Associates.
"I wish every Democratic candidate would read this book. It is a
highly intelligent, fact-based defense of the virtues of an open,
competitive economy and society." -Fareed Zakaria, CNN With the
winds of trade war blowing as they have not done in decades, and
Left and Right flirting with protectionism, a leading economist
forcefully shows how a free and open economy is still the best way
to advance the interests of working Americans. Globalization has a
bad name. Critics on the Left have long attacked it for exploiting
the poor and undermining labor. Today, the Right challenges
globalization for tilting the field against advanced economies.
Kimberly Clausing faces down the critics from both sides,
demonstrating in this vivid and compelling account that open
economies are a force for good, not least in helping the most
vulnerable. A leading authority on corporate taxation and an
advocate of a more equal economy, Clausing agrees that Americans,
especially those with middle and lower incomes, face stark economic
challenges. But these problems do not require us to retreat from
the global economy. On the contrary, she shows, an open economy
overwhelmingly helps. International trade makes countries richer,
raises living standards, benefits consumers, and brings nations
together. Global capital mobility helps both borrowers and lenders.
International business improves efficiency and fosters innovation.
And immigration remains one of America's greatest strengths, as
newcomers play an essential role in economic growth, innovation,
and entrepreneurship. Closing the door to the benefits of an open
economy would cause untold damage. Instead, Clausing outlines a
progressive agenda to manage globalization more effectively,
presenting strategies to equip workers for a modern economy,
improve tax policy, and establish a better partnership between
labor and the business community. Accessible, rigorous, and
passionate, Open is the book we need to help us navigate the
debates currently convulsing national and international economics
and politics.
The Greek-German school dictionary developed in the second half of
the 19th century by Gustav Eduard Benseler, is still an essential
reference work today, thanks especially to the last extensive
revision in 1931. The main content of the dictionary was based on
the works of Homer, Herodotus, Aischylos, Sophokles, Euripides,
Thucydides, Xenophon, Plato, Lysias and the New Testament.
