In every legend, there is a legacy. In the life and career of
undersea
explorer Jacques Cousteau, that legacy beats in the heart of the
sea and in
the heart of his son, Jean-Michel, the noted French
environmentalist,
educator and documentary film producer who has spent most of his
adult life
nurturing the work of his famous father.
In My Father, The Captain, Jean-Michel Cousteau takes an open and
intimate look at the life he shared with his father, and the legend
he has taken it
upon himself to carry. In so doing, he hopes to shed new and
meaningful
light on the life and work of a man who inspired millions to
reconsider our
relationship with the sea and its creatures-and, in the process,
to
understand a little more about himself and his family as well.
Captain Cousteau was a complicated man, the younger Cousteau
writes. He
was a man of many different personalities, many different moods.
But this
is how it is with all great men, yes? We know the public mask, but
it is
the private face that reveals a man's true character. It is the man
we
know when the cameras are not filming.
My Father, The Captain is shot-through with new material and fresh
insights
into the life and mind of a man who helped to jump-start a
global
conservation effort that continues to flourish. Jean-Michel
Cousteau and
his collaborator, New York Times best-selling author Daniel
Paisner, offer
an intimate reappraisal of the many touchstone moments Jean-Michel
shared
with his father, as well as the seminal moments from his father's
life that
have become part of the Cousteau family lore and legend.
Why does water always take a winding course in streams and rivers?
Do common principles and rhythms underlie its movement - whether it
be in the sea, in a plant, or even in the blood of a human being?
In this seminal and thought-provoking work, the laws apparent in
the subtle patterns of water in movement are shown to be the same
as those perceptible in the shaping of bones, muscles and a myriad
of other forms in nature. Fully illustrated, Sensitive Chaos
reveals the unifying forces that underlie all living things. The
author observes and explains such phenomena as the flight of birds,
the formation of internal organs such as the heart, eye and ear, as
well as mountain ranges and river deltas, weather and space
patterns, and even the formation of the human embryo. A perennial
bestseller since publication, Sensitive Chaos is an essential book
for anyone interested in the mysteries of life on earth.

"An electrifying, many-faceted masterwork."--"Booklist"
The beloved explorer Jacques Cousteau witnessed firsthand the
complexity and beauty of life on earth and undersea--and watched
the toll taken by human activity in the twentieth century. In this
magnificent last book, now available for the first time in the
United States, Cousteau describes his deeply informed philosophy
about protecting our world for future generations. Weaving gripping
stories of his adventures throughout, he and coauthor Susan
Schiefelbein address the risks we take with human health, the
overfishing and sacking of the world's oceans, the hazards of
nuclear proliferation, and the environmental responsibility of
scientists, politicians, and people of faith. This prescient,
clear-sighted book is a remarkable testament to the life and work
of one of our greatest modern adventurers.

Michael Muller has carved a career out of impressive encounters.
Famed for his portraits of the world's most elite actors,
musicians, and sports stars, he has in the last decade built up one
of the most spectacular portfolios of underwater shark photography.
Muller's quest is to document sharks with an unprecedented
proximity and precision, bringing the Hollywood portrait session to
the ocean predator. In ocean depths around the world, he approaches
the sharks with a patented seven-bulb, 1200-watt plexi-encased
strobe lighting rig, developed with NASA engineering, and no cage.
This collection of Muller's images, including the first-known
photograph of a great white breaching at night, is a catalog of
adrenalin and awe. Arranged geographically, it follows Muller's
ocean adventures from black tip and sand tiger sharks in South
Africa to great hammerheads in the Bahamas, with thrilling
narratives from each trip documenting the challenges and
near-misses along the way. To compliment Muller's work for advocacy
organizations such as WildAid and EarthEcho, the images are
contextualized with essays from Philippe Cousteau, Jr. and marine
biologist Alison Kock, who discuss exploration and conservation of
our oceanic kingdom. Culture writer Arty Nelson adds an overview of
Muller's work, while a technical section explains the precise
equipment behind these spectacular shots. Together, these
insightful texts and awesome images offer a record of breathtaking
photographic feats, a tribute to the beauty and might of the shark,
and a rallying cry for its fragile future. This book is also
available in a signed Collector's Edition and two Art Editions,
each including a signed and numbered print.
Americans obtain health insurance through a variety of methods and
from different sources. People may get insurance through the
private sector or from a government source, or individuals may go
uninsured. Most individuals had private health insurance or
received health care services under a federal program (such as
Medicare or Medicaid). About 8.7% of the U.S. population was
uninsured. This book looks at health care coverage in the United
States.
The rising costs of post-secondary education present challenges to
maintaining college affordability. Textbooks are an important
factor students need to consider when calculating the overall cost
of attending college. In an effort to ensure that faculty and
students have sufficient information about textbooks, Congress
included requirements in the Higher Education Opportunity Act
(HEOA) concerning publisher and school disclosures, as well as
publisher provisions of individual course materials. The HEOA
directed the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to examine the
implementation of the new textbook provisions. This book addresses
(1) the efforts publishers have made to provide textbook
information to faculty and make bundled materials available for
sale individually, and how these practices have informed faculty
selection of course materials; and (2) the extent to which
post-secondary schools have provided students and college bookshops
access to textbook information, and what the resulting costs and
benefits have been. To conduct this study, the GAO interviewed
eight publishers representing over 85 percent of new U.S. higher
education textbook sales, administrators at seven schools, four
campus bookshops, two national campus retailers, faculty and
student groups at three schools, and others with relevant
expertise. GAO also reviewed websites of a nationally
representative sample of schools, complaint data from Education,
and relevant federal laws.
