Focusing on the policy approaches of Conservative governments since
2015, this book examines key social policy areas including
education, health, housing, employment, children and young people
and more. Respected social policy researchers explore the degree to
which the positions and policies of recent Conservative governments
have differed from the previous Coalition government (2010-2015).
They consider the extent to which austerity has continued and the
influence of other policy emphases, such as a ‘levelling up’
agenda. Reflecting the rapid changes of Prime Minister, they
compare the themes of the Cameron, May, Johnson, Truss and Sunak
administrations, critically examine the impacts of the external
shocks of Brexit and COVID-19, as well as changing patterns of
public expenditure.
This volume examines the source of ideas in active labor market
policies in the US, France, Denmark, UK and at European Union
level. What are the most likely trajectories of active labour
market policies in different national settings? Will welfare reform
become more punitive towards welfare recipients, thus implying that
the EU will just pay lip service to the commitment to social
justice that is at the core of the European social model?

Critic and historian Mercedes Daguerre explores Latin America's
evolving modernist tradition through the one-family houses of the
region's leading contemporary architects. The book demonstrates the
architects' diverse and rich interpretation of modernist principles
through case studies of 19 homes built in Mexico, Chile, Brazil,
Peru, Uruguay, and Argentina. Architects featured include Paulo
Mendes da Rocha, winner of the 2006 Pritzker Architecture Prize.
Critic and historian Mercedes Daguerre presents 20 innovative
houses by 20 leading contemporary architects and explores how
domestic architecture has responded to the changing nature of
family life. Featured architects include established stars such as
Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, Tadao Ando of Japan and Glenn Murcutt
of Australia as well as a number of emerging practices. Case study
houses are drawn from all over the world and span a diverse range
of geographical settings from inner city Manhattan to the sand
dunes of Victoria in Australia.
The election of Barack Obama in the midst of the 2008 economic
downturn brought hope to millions and presented an opportunity for
expanding socio-economic rights. But the Obama administration was
consistently constrained by the challenges of divided government,
and the now threatened Affordable Care Act ('Obamacare') remains
the stand-out welfare reform of his Presidency. Using new research,
Anne Daguerre examines Obama's legacy on welfare and antipoverty
policies, focusing in particular on the Temporary Assistance for
Needy Families (TANF) and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
Program (SNAP). The book provides an up-to-date account of the
contemporary politics of poverty and public entitlements in the US,
comparing this with the Western European experience and its
traditionally strong commitment to social welfare, to assess what
lessons can be learned.
Examining recent policy responses to social exclusion in the US,
France, Denmark, the UK, and at the EU level since 1997, Daguerre
argues that the development of active labour market policies is not
the answer and that the reforms are indicative of a shift towards
conditional welfare. The book is based on in-depth interviews with
key policy makers.
Teenage parenthood is recognised as a significant disadvantage in
western industrialised nations. It has been found to increase the
likelihood of poverty and to reinforce inequalities. This book
explores, for the first time, the links between welfare state
provision and teenage reproductive behaviour across a range of
countries with differing welfare regimes. Drawing on both welfare
state and feminist literature, as well as on new empirical
evidence, the book compares public policy responses to teenage
parenthood in each 'family' of welfare regime: Nordic, Liberal and
Continental (Western European); analyses the different
socio-political contexts in which teenage pregnancy is constructed
as a social problem and identifies best practice in Europe and the
USA. Countries included in the study are the UK, USA, New Zealand,
France, Italy, Poland, Denmark, Norway, the Canadian province of
Quebec and Russia. The contributors are all internationally
recognised experts in the fields of welfare and/or gender studies.
"When children become parents" is important reading for a wide
audience of students, policy makers, practitioners and academics in
sociology, social policy, social geography, education, psychology,
and youth and gender studies.

We give below a description of this most interesting discovery, and
take great pleasure in stating that several gentlemen of this city,
among whom, we may name Dr. Chilton, President Morse, and Professor
Draper, have fully succeeded in procuring fine specimens of
photogenic drawing, by means of this instrument. Translated from
the original paper of L. J. M. Daguerre, (the inventor, ) by J. S.
