This unique collection of essays provides a re-evaluation of the term 'Atlantic, ' by placing at the core of the debate on republicanism in the early modern age the link between continental Europe and America, rather than assuming British political culture as having been widely representative of Europe as a whole.
This book provides a critical examination of over 300 historical works about the French Revolution, published in Europe (in particular in France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy and Russia) as well as in the United States between 1789 and 1989. It also goes on to examine recent trends in French Revolution historiography and consider where histories of this landmark event may go in the future. By emphasizing the elements which have been valued or hidden, exalted or silenced, Historicizing the French Revolution shows how reflections on 1789 are always fundamentally tied to the times in which they are formulated. Antonino De Francesco looks at the ways in which these historical accounts can be seen to support and, at times, contrast with the formation of political modernity - both in national and international contexts - as it has taken shape in the hundreds of years that have followed this key moment in world history.
With Italy under Napoleonic rule at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the antiquarian topic of anti-romanism became a pillar of the Italian nation-building process and, in turn, was used against the dominant French culture. The history of the Italian nation predating the Roman Empire supported the idea of an Italian cultural primacy and proved crucial in the creation of modern Italian nationalism. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, Italian studies of Roman history would drape a dark veil over the earliest history of Italy while Fascism openly claimed the legacy of the Roman Empire. Italic antiquity would, however, remain alive through all those years, intersecting with the political and cultural life of modern Italy. In this book, De Francesco examines the different uses of the constantly reasserted antiquity of the Italian nation in history, archaeology, palaeoethnology, and anthropology from the Napoleonic period to the collapse of Fascism.
The book covers advertising from top to bottom, including the history and development of the advertising industry, the academic thinking that underpins how advertising is practiced today and the strategies used in both conventional and digital advertising today. It offers extensive coverage of traditional and contemporary approaches to all mainstream media, strategy and planning, insights into the creative advertising process and how messages and content are developed and a wealth of contemporary examples from around Europe and beyond. Importantly, the book also includes coverage of the challenges of measuring and delivering tangible results. This book is the essential companion for undergraduate, postgraduate and professional students studying Advertising, Media and related subjects.
This book places itself at the intersection of two fields of study--military history and political ideologies--in order to investigate the troubling links between warfare and republicanism during the Revolutionary era. This international team of historians probes the dynamics of nations born of revolutions, and the violent confrontations that erupted as republicans carried their principles beyond their borders. The collection presents fresh work, including articles by scholars who have not previously published in English. Their wide-ranging inquiries highlight the impact of war on slave emancipation in the Caribbean and the United States, as well as the attempts to impose republicanism through warfare in Ireland, Italy and Spain. They trace debates in theaters, diplomatic communiques, and conscription strategies to understand the meaning of war in the name of a republic. Together, the contributions reveal the profound, often damaging, and sometimes liberating consequences of those combined military and political undertakings.
The European Union and its member states are investing in ambitious programmes for 'better regulation' and targets of regulatory quality. This book, available in paperback for the first time, lifts the veil of excessively optimistic propositions covering the whole better regulation agenda. It provides an innovative conceptual framework to handle the political complexity of regulatory governance. It approaches better regulation as an emerging public policy, with its own political context, actors, problems, rules of interaction, instruments, activities and impacts. Focusing on the key tools of impact assessment, consultation, simplification, and access to legislation, the authors provide fresh empirical evidence on the progress made in the member states and in Brussels, drawing on an extensive research project and an original survey of directors of better regulation programmes in Europe. Radaelli and De Francesco show how indicators define, measure, and appraise better regulation policy, linking measures to policy processes in which the stakeholders learn by monitoring. Although better regulation is a top priority for competitiveness in Europe and the legitimacy of EU policy, the level of commitment and the development of tools vary considerably. The major challenge for better regulation is institutionalisation - this calls for clear choices in terms of what the EU wants from better regulation. Essential reading for academics (political scientists, lawyers, and public economists) and policy-makers in charge of regulatory reforms in governments and international organisations. -- .
Analyzing Georg Simmel s theory of domination and subordination as presented in his Soziologie (1908), Adele Bianco focuses on concrete case studies to derive an interpretation of globalization processes. Within sociology, domination and subordination are reciprocal. They represent constitutive modes of associated living, based on a hierarchical structure. Domination and subordination reflect social configurations, but are very controversial categories. Sometimes perceived as a justification of the status quo, they also run the risk of legitimizing the perpetuation of inequalities. In truth, they are tools to help us understand social order and identify inequalities' regulating structures. Domination and Subordination as a Social Organization Principle in Georg Simmel's Soziologie begins by defining the relationship between domination and subordination at the micro level the relationship among subjects. Then, after discussing the macro level, Bianco employs a variety of case studies to expose the intricacies of Simmel's domination and subordination theory. The ensuing discussions of democracy, employment relationships, social relationships, and globalization answer such questions as: Why is society divided between a top and a bottom? What does it mean to wield authority? What degrees of power are held by those in a position of inferiority? Why is the strong subject ultimately in need of the weak subject? What can be said of a majority winning in a democracy, and what is the minority left with? How can the social condition of the modern worker be reconciled with his proclaimed freedom? (and) What does subordination to the employer effectively comprise? Scholars and students of sociology, social theory, labor studies, and psychology will benefit from this book's combination of intricate theories and real-world case studies towards a comprehensive theory of modern globalization."
This collection probes the troubling connections between war and republic during Revolutionary era, 1776-1840. It presents the work of an international team of scholars, some of them in English for the first time.

How comes that Mr. Berlusconi is still leading the biggest Italian political Party? How is it possible that after being found guilty of fiscal fraud by the Italian High Court after all the appeals, as a convicted felon he is received by the President of the Republic to have talks about constituting the new government? How comes that the chief of the opposition, Matteo Renzi, has continuously consulted with him to create his government? How can possibly happen, that a convicted felon, expelled from the Italian Senate and barred from holding any public office for three years, still is the official representative of half the country? In this writing the author finally answers to all those questions, explaining how that is possible, all in less than 10,000 words, avoiding to side-track the reader into long and often boring explanations. This book can be read in less than one hour and in the end you will finally feel to have understood what's going on in Italy.
Through three empirical, regulatory impact analysis (RIA) case studies, this volume analyzes the role of the international Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in policy innovation diffusion, exhibiting the impact of transnational networks on national policy processes. The text's analytical framework showcases the institutional features as well as the internal and international determinants of a policy innovation such as RIA. Drawing on original data sets, case studies measure the extent to which the OECD worked with various governments to adopt, implement, and evaluate RIA. "Transnational Policy Innovation" underscores the usefulness of concepts of policy innovation diffusion for understanding the dynamics of transnational governance. The volume calls attention to the OECD's success in framing and diffusing a template of evidence-based decision making, yet it downplays RIA as an instrument of political control, noting its limiting influence on the OECD's peer review and comparative indicators within institutional and administratives settings.
