Today, more than ever before, South Africa’s business climate is confronted with various challenges as a result of external environmental forces as well as internal nuances within the southern African context. The environment is characterised by change, turbulence and competitiveness, and therefore strategy is of the utmost importance for any organisation to survive and thrive. Many people’s lives and jobs are affected by strategic decisions and far too often, top management develops a strategy that is neither communicated to, nor fully understood by, other levels of management and employees, and may not even be relevant to the continued existence of the organisation. Strategic management explains the principles and application of the strategic management process, vital to sustaining the success of every organisation. Real southern African case studies are included to support these principles and applications.
This is the fourth edition of Strategic management, the first specifically southern African textbook on this subject. It emphasises the important role of corporate governance, with specific reference to the King IV Report. Appropriate southern African examples and case studies are used to illustrate the latest trends, particularly the history, development and strategy of Shoprite Checkers, which is used as a cohesion case study throughout this textbook. Key terms, summary questions and answers, relevant websites and recommended reading lists are also provided.
Strategic management: southern African concepts and cases will be invaluable not only to students of business management but also to organisations, from corporate companies with management training programmes to small business ventures struggling to hold their ground in a competitive environment.
Covid-19 has upended the world of work and the need to think differently, plan differently and execute differently is paramount for today’s organisations. Added to this, African countries in general and South Africa in particular are faced with other challenges – infrastructure, corruption, service delivery and an uncertain political environment. Business is increasingly confronted with challenges from external environmental forces and the internal nuances of the southern African context. Our environment is characterised by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity, and strategy is of the utmost importance for any organisation to survive and thrive. Strategic management explains the principles and application of the strategic management process that are vital for sustaining successful organisations.
This fifth edition of Strategic management emphasises various relevant and topical strategic challenges (such as corporate governance) and appropriate southern African examples and case studies are used throughout the text to illustrate the latest trends and to support the theory. A cohesion case study of Shoprite Checkers and its strategic choices (such as the Sixty60 concept) runs throughout this book. Key terms, summary questions and answers, relevant websites and recommended reading lists are also provided.
Strategic management: Southern African concepts and cases will be invaluable not only to students of business management, but also to organisations, from corporate organisations with management training programmes to small business ventures struggling to hold their ground in a competitive environment.

Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made

In a South African business environment characterised by change,
turbulence and competitiveness, strategy is even more crucial today
than ever before. Far too often top management develops a strategy
for the company that is never communicated to or understood by
other levels of management and employees, or is not even relevant
to the future survival of the company. It is therefore crucial for
students and practitioners of management at every level to
understand the vital role of strategic management in the business
world.

Until now no overview of the Quaternary deposits of northeastern
Europe has been available. This book fills the gap. It presents the
state of research on Quaternary stratigraphy and geology, with
emphasis on glacial deposits, discusses the general scientific
ideas and gives an overview of the methods of investigation, some
of which have rarely been applied elsewhere. It has become apparent
that the region covered has many environmental problems, and a
proper understanding of the Quaternary deposits is a basic
requirement for dealing with them. The same is true for civil
engineering. In the formerly glaciated areas almost all
construction sites for roads and houses will encounter glacial
deposits. This volume provides an authoritative and fascinating
overview for anyone planning to venture into this field. In its 53
regional chapters the book covers Finland, Estonia, Latvia,
Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, the Czech Republic and
eastern Germany. From the text it becomes clear that not all the
stratigraphical schemes are yet fully compatible or comprehensible.
There can be no doubt, however, that the east was subjected to very
extensive ice advances during the earlier Pleistocene. Also, in
contrast to western Europe, there was a significant Early
Weichselian ice advance, although not as extensive as the last,
Late Weichselian event. The book is illustrated by 421 figures and
74 colour plates (mostly photographs). There are 23 tables, a
detailed index and a list of over 1000 references, providing a
unique collection of northeastern European geoscience literature,
much of which has so far escaped the attention of western
scientists. The volume, composed of contributions by 60 scientists,
completes the trilogy on glacial deposits of northern Europe.
Together with its two companion volumes, the Glacial deposits in
North-West Europe and the Glacial Deposits in Great Britain and
Ireland, it represents an invaluable source of information for the
geoscientist, the advanced student or the amateur.
This volume is an interdisciplinary attempt to insert a broader,
historically informed perspective into current political and
academic debates on the issue of evidence and the reliability of
scientific knowledge. The tensions between competing paradigms,
different bodies of knowledge and the relative hierarchies between
them are a crucial element of the historical and contemporary
dynamics of scientific knowledge production. The negotiation of
evidence is at the heart of this process. Starting from the premise
that evidence constitutes a central, but also essentially contested
concept in contemporary knowledge-based societies, this volume
focuses on how evidence is generated and applied in practice-in
other words, on "evidence in action." The contributions analyze and
compare different evidence practices within the field of science
and technology, how they interlink with different forms of power,
their interaction with and impact on the legal and political
domain, and their relationship to other, more heterodox forms of
evidence that challenge traditional notions of evidence. In doing
so, this volume provides much-needed context and historical
background to contemporary debates on the so-called "post-truth"
society. Evidence in Action is the perfect resource for all those
interested in the relationship between science, technology, and the
role of knowledge in society.
In this invaluable book, leading agronomic researchers provide
in-depth reviews of present conservation tillage practices in a
wide variety of temperate agroecosystems. Each chapter
characterizes how conservation tillage has been developed and
adapted or modified to fit specific environments, with the chapters
divided into the following climate regions: Cool Humid, Cool Humid
to Warm Humid, Warm Humid, and Sub-Humid to Semi-Arid Continental.
Each chapter also discusses important topics such as weed problems,
crop rotation, fertilizer requirements, soil properties and
processes, soil erosion, soil chemistry, soil physics, and
environmental issues. A perfect working reference, this resource
provides a synthesis of existing research and practices and shows
how soil, climatic, and biological constraints can be overcome or
circumvented.

Both in life and death, Queen Victoria is among of the most popular
monarchs to be committed to film. Her reign was characterized by an
explosion in media coverage that began to rely on images rather
than words to tell her story. Even though Victoria has been labeled
the "first media monarch," the sheer magnitude of her screen
presence has been neither chronicled nor fully appreciated until
now. This book examines the growth and evolution of Queen
Victoria's on-screen image. From the satirical cartoons and silent
films of the 19th century to the television shows, video games and
webcomics of the 21st, it demonstrates how the protean Victoria
character has evolved, ultimately meaning many different things to
many different people in many different ways. Each chapter looks at
a facet of her character and includes analysis of how these media
present Queen Victoria as a real person and shape her as a
character acting within a narrative. The book includes a
comprehensive and international filmography.
"In her book, Silent Looms: Women and Production in a Guatemalan
Town, Tracy Bachrach Ehlers captures the paradox of gender
relations in a society that accords power and authority to men yet
leaves the major burden of child care and economic maintenance of
the family to women. Most monographs on Maya populations have
either ignored women's contributions to the indigenous economy or,
when they have included women's work, have ignored the
contradiction between patriarchal ideology and observed behavior
that is increasingly sharpened by the political and economic
transformations taking place. "
