Liverpool's unique history as an international port and a cultural
melting pot has given it a character all its own. The city has
produced music that conquered the world and is home to more
historic buildings than any other British metropolis outside
London. It features two magnificent cathedrals and many world
famous museums. But beyond its renowned exterior, is an eclectic
assortment of places hidden and unknown. This deliciously offbeat
guidebook will lead you to a different Liverpool: down tunnels, up
skyscrapers, and into secret bars, speciality shops, and disused
factories. You will see Balenciaga trainers and vintage planes,
rolling bridges and disappearing statues, Liver birds and celebrity
suitcases, home-baked cakes and cast-iron churches. Stroll under
the palms in a magical glasshouse, explore a 1950s kitchen or a
museum of false teeth. Relax in a hip tea bar with over 50
varieties of tea (loose leaf naturally). Marvel at the world's most
expensive book or largest brick building (27 million bricks!). Go
underground to explore a network of mysterious tunnels or a
perfectly preserved World War II bunker. Drink in a prison cell,
picnic in a graveyard, or stay in the hotel where Winston Churchill
and Bob Dylan were guests. Think you know Liverpool? Think again!
Whether you're a long-time local, a first-time tourist, or a repeat
visitor, prepare to be charmed and intrigued by 111 eccentric and
unusual spots you'd never expect to find in the city best known for
football and the Fab Four.

Based on deeply personal testimonies and factual research, Out on
An Island presents a rich and diverse portrayal of Isle of Wight
LGBTQ+ history. Shining a light on stories of struggle and truth
shared through recorded oral histories, this is a book which
unearths a public history and cultural heritage hidden for over a
century. In a collaborative effort among LGBTQ+ Island residents,
Out on An Island signifies the first ever project dedicated to
local LGBTQ+ oral history on the Isle of Wight. Created in
remarkable circumstances, it celebrates a close-knit community
surviving together in the face of exclusion, prejudice and
misrepresentation. The result is an inspiring collection of
interviews from LGBTQ+ people concerning their lives on the Island.
The oral histories are shared in a matter-of-fact style, with
accounts of disturbing homophobia, rejection and exclusion peppered
with moments of joy and celebration. From beginning to end are
stories of courage and despair which stand as powerful testaments
of human endeavour. While some of the LGBTQ+ community were proud
to call the Isle of Wight their home, others feared discrimination,
and were desperate to escape. Read about the fierce, enigmatic
lesbian Joe Carstairs, and the adventures of the all-female
Ferguson's Gang in Newtown in the 1920s. Delving into the Island's
1980s gay scene, hear accounts of a community thriving in the face
of negative local press and the grim shadow of Section 28. Onwards
to the 1990s, experience the moment the Island welcomed its first
ever local Gay Guide; and in the not-so-distant past, learn about a
lingering culture of homophobia exposed by the Island's first Pride
in 2017, and the resignations of reputable local journalist
Charlotte Hofton, and the Island's Conservative MP Andrew Turner. A
testament to the history, lives, social and political contribution
of the Isle of Wight LGBTQ+ community for future generations, Out
On An Island restores a shared and vibrant past. Instigating a
broader dialogue on what can be complex and sensitive topics,
readers are provided with a better understanding of the importance
of equality, inclusion and the hurdles individuals must overcome to
be their authentic selves.
This book explores the notion of rurality and how it is used and
produced in various contexts, including within populist politics
which derives their legitimacy from the rural-urban divide. The gap
between the âcommon peopleâ and the âelitesâ is widening
again as images of rurality are promoted as morally pure,
unalienated and opposed to the cultural and economic globalization.
This book examines how using certain images and projections of
rurality produces ârural authenticityâ, a concept propagated by
various groups of people such as regional food producers,
filmmakers, policymakers, and lobbyists. It seeks to answer
questions such as: What is the rurality that these groups of people
refer to? How is it produced? What are the purposes that it serves?
Research in this book addresses these questions from the areas of
both politics and policies of the âauthentic ruralâ. The
âpoliticsâ refers to polarizations including politicians,
social movements, and political events which accentuate the
rural-urban divide and brings it back to the core of the societal
conflict, while the âpoliciesâ focus on rural tourism, heritage
industry, popular art and other areas where rurality is constantly
produced and consumed. With international case studies from leading
scholars in the field of rural studies, the book will appeal to
geographers, sociologists, politicians, as well as those interested
in the re-emergence of the rural-urban divide in politics and
media. Chapter 8 of this book is freely available as a downloadable

Materials Selection for Sustainability in the Built Environment:
Environmental, Social and Economic Aspects presents the current
state-of-the-art when it comes to the decision-making process for
choosing construction materials to deliver sustainable construction
projects. Aspects covered include the science of enhanced
decision-making via operational research and machine learning
techniques and how this can be implemented in various disciplines
such as architecture, engineering and construction. To this end,
the book discusses environmental, economic and social aspects in
assessing construction materials and presents different tools and
methods that can benefit and facilitate this process. Finally, the
book reviews previous publications on construction material
selection and presents essential discussions on the role
professionals, researchers, contractors and governments play in
making more sustainable decisions on the built environment.
The book explores the impact of manuscript remarks during the year
1929 on the development of Wittgenstein's thought. Although its
intention is to put the focus specifically on the manuscripts, the
book is not purely exegetical. The contributors generate important
new insights for understanding Wittgenstein's philosophy and his
place in the history of analytic philosophy. Wittgenstein's
writings from the years 1929-1930 are valuable, not simply because
they marked Wittgenstein's return to academic philosophy after a
seven-year absence, but because these works indicate several
changes in his philosophical thinking. The chapters in this volume
clarify the significance of Wittgenstein's return to philosophy in
1929. In Part 1, the contributors address different issues in the
philosophy of mathematics, e.g. Wittgenstein's understanding of
certain aspects of intuitionism and his commitment to
verificationism, as well as his idea of "a new system". Part 2
examines Wittgenstein's philosophical development and his
understanding of philosophical method. Here the contributors
examine particular problems Wittgenstein dealt with in 1929, e.g.
the colour-exclusion problem, and the use of thought experiments as
well as his relationship to Frank Ramsey and philosophical
pragmatism. Part 3 features essays on phenomenological language.
These chapters address the role of spatial analogies and the
structure of visual space. Finally, Part 4 includes one chapter on
Wittgenstein's few manuscript remarks about ethics and religion and
relates it to his Lecture on Ethics. Wittgenstein's Philosophy in
1929 will be of great interest to scholars and advanced students
working on Wittgenstein and the history of analytic philosophy.
This book explores the notion of rurality and how it is used and
produced in various contexts, including within populist politics

produces 'rural authenticity', a concept propagated by various

This book focuses on the bridges that connect the dynamic relations
between consumer actions, the marketplace, and cultural meanings.
Answering the challenge to do more than merely cross the boundaries
between these fields, the authors in this volume also undertake the
far harder work of bridging them. Consequently, this book is a rich
and topical array of research projects which engage in a variety of
theoretical and empirical boundary crossings. The authors' diverse
methodologies span archival research, visual content analysis,
ethnography and phenomenological interviewing. Their research
contexts are distinctly globally diverse, as reflected in the
topics of their studies: aid in contemporary Syrian refugee camps
in Germany; early twentieth-century Swedish advertisements for
kitchens; family formation in twenty-first-century Sri Lanka;
Brazilian book (de)collectors; and the signification of magazine
covers in India. Overall, the book makes for compelling reading
across and beyond conventional boundaries associated with the study
of consumption, markets and culture. This book was originally
published as a peer-reviewed special issue of Consumption Markets
& Culture.
Organizations change, usually driven by strategies, yet strategic
management and organizational change are generally understood as
separate domains in the business world. This book integrates the
behavioural dynamics of learning, change and strategy at and across
individual, team, interdepartmental, group and organizational
levels. This new edition emphasizes what can be done in
organizations to enable strategy to be effective and to help
organizations to change and learn. Central to the book is a
reflexive engagement approach through inviting the readers to apply
concepts to their own organizational situations and via reflective
exercises. The authors also offer cases from a wide range of
organizations, from universities to steel and digital businesses.
This practical book addresses managers, consultants, students and
researchers and provides specific orientation to assist each
readership group to learn from its own perspective.
Drug-resistant infections are one of the greatest threats to human
health, and with resistance on the rise, appropriate antimicrobial
stewardship (AMS) is more important than ever. This book, written
by nurses for nurses, provides a clear and concise approach to good
practice in this vital area. Exploring all aspects of AMS, this new
book is underpinned by a competency framework endorsed by
scientific and professional societies, including the National
Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). It explains the
practices that ensure optimal use of antibiotics for the best
clinical outcome, with both minimal toxicity to the patient and
minimal impact on subsequent antimicrobial resistance. This book,
the first applied directly to antimicrobial stewardship for nurses,
supports standards of proficiency for registered nurses, and can
therefore be used by regulators and professional bodies to inform
standards of proficiency and guidance. The book covers infection
prevention and control, antimicrobial resistance, diagnosis of
infection and appropriate antimicrobial use, patient engagement,
collaboration between professions and how to implement AMS in
nursing practice. Including learning tools such as objectives,
practical case studies and questions throughout, as well as lecture
slides, this book is an essential read for undergraduate nursing
students and specialist nurses worldwide. This book is authored by
a multi-national group of experts with representation from
professional associations, universities and national public health
agencies, such as: - Royal College of Nursing, UK - Cardiff
University, UK - University of Sao Paulo, Brazil - Public Health
England, UK - National Centre for Antimicrobial Stewardship,

This volume aims to provide the reader with a broad cross-section
of empirical research being carried out into engineers at work. The
chapters provide pointers to other relevant studies over recent
decades - an important aspect, we believe, because this area has
only recently begun to coalesce as a field of study and up to now
relevant empirical research has tended to be published across a
range of academic disciplines. This lack of readily available
literature might explain why contemporary notions of engineering
have drifted far from the realities of practice and are in urgent
need of revision. The principal focus is on what empirical studies
tell us about the social and technical aspects of engineering
practice and the mutual interaction between the two. After a
foreword by Gary Lee Downey, the research presented by the various
chapter authors is based on empirical data from studies of
engineers working in a variety of global settings that include
Australia, Ireland, Portugal, South Asia, Switzerland, the UK and
the US The following groups of readers are addressed: *researchers
and students with an interest in engineering practice,
*professional engineers, particularly those interested in research
on engineering practice, *engineering educators, *people who
employ, recruit or work with engineers. Providing a much clearer
picture of engineering practice and its variations than has been
available until now, the book is of interest to engineers and those
who work with them. At the same time it provides invaluable
resource material for educators who are aiming for more authentic
learning experiences in their classrooms. Further information,

Dante, the pilgrim, is the image of an author who stubbornly looks
ahead, seeking and building the "Great Beyond" (Manguel). Following
in his footsteps is therefore not a return to the past, going a
rebours, but a commitment to the future, to exploring the potential
of humanity to "transhumanise". This dynamic of self-transcendence
in Dante's humanism (Ossola), which claims for European
civilisation a vocation for universalism (Ferroni), is analysed in
the volume at three crucial moments: Firstly, the establishment of
an emancipatory relationship between author and reader (Ascoli), in
which authorship is authority and not power; secondly, the
conception of vision as a learning process and horizon of
eschatological overcoming (Mendonca); finally, the relationship
with the past, which is never purely monumental, but ethically and
intertextually dynamic, in an original rewriting of the original
scriptural, medieval, and classical culture (Nasti, Bolzoni,
Bartolomei). A second group of contributions is dedicated to the
reconstruction of Dante's presence in Portuguese literature
(Almeida, Espirito Santo, Figueiredo, Marnoto, Vaz de Carvalho):
they attest to the innovative impact of Dante's work even in
literary traditions more distant from it.

Increasingly the world around us is becoming 'smart.' From smart
meters to smart production, from smart surfaces to smart grids,
from smart phones to smart citizens. 'Smart' has become the
catch-all term to indicate the advent of a charged technological
shift that has been propelled by the promise of safer, more
convenient and more efficient forms of living. Most architects,
designers, planners and politicians seem to agree that the smart
transition of cities and buildings is in full swing and inevitable.
However, beyond comfort, safety and efficiency, how can 'smart
design and technologies' assist to address current and future
challenges of architecture and urbanism? Architecture and the Smart
City provides an architectural perspective on the emergence of the
smart city and offers a wide collection of resources for developing
a better understanding of how smart architecture, smart cities and
smart systems in the built environment are discussed, designed and
materialized. It brings together a range of international thinkers
and practitioners to discuss smart systems through four thematic
sections: 'Histories and Futures', 'Agency and Control',
'Materialities and Spaces' and 'Networks and Nodes'. Combined,
these four thematic sections provide different perspectives into
some of the most pressing issues with smart systems in the built
environment. The book tackles questions related to the future of
architecture and urbanism, lessons learned from global case studies
and challenges related to interdisciplinary research, and
critically examines what the future of buildings and cities will
look like.

Strategy Beyond Markets examines how the strategies employed by
firms affect long run value. Scholars in this field focus their
attention on firm interactions with entities other than the firm's
primary market stakeholders. These stakeholders include
international NGOs, environmental groups, local communities,
regulators, politicians and the courts. This book is organized
around three themes: Public politics, private politics, and
integrated political strategy. In public politics, firms use
sophisticated instruments (e.g., campaign funding, committee
participation) to influence local, national, and international
political environments. In private politics, firms work closely
with NGOs and other special interest groups to preempt unfavorable
policy, react swiftly to crises, and proactively develop socially
responsible strategies. Additionally, firms that are heavily
influenced by politics are more likely to craft integrated
political strategy as part of a more comprehensive plan. This
special issue comprises papers from preeminent scholars including
David Baron, Jean-Philippe Bonardi, Daniel Diermeier, Thomas Lyon,
John Maxwell, Ken Shotts, and Dennis Yao.
D_Tex is proposed as a hub around which it is possible to look at
textiles in their different forms, in order to better understand,
study, adapt and project them for the future. It is intended to
build a flow of ideas and concepts so that participants can arrive
at new ideas and concepts and work them in their own way, adapting
them to their objectives and research. D_Tex is intended as a space
for sharing and building knowledge around textile material in order
to propose new understandings and explorations. Present in all
areas of knowledge, the textile material bets on renewed social
readings and its evolutions to constantly reinvent itself and
enable innovative cultural and aesthetic dimensions and unexpected
applications to solve questions and promote new knowledge. D_Tex
proposes to promote discussion and knowledge in the different areas
where textiles, with all their characteristics, can ensure an
important contribution, combining material and immaterial
knowledge, innovative and traditional techniques, technological and
innovative materials and methods, but also new organization and
service models, different concepts and views on teaching. With the
renewed idea of the intrinsic interdisciplinarity of design and
sharing with different areas that support each other, the research
and practice of textiles was proposed by the D_TEX Textile Design
Conference 2019, held June 19-21, 2019 at the Lisbon School of
Architecture of the University of Lisbon, Portugal under the theme
"In Touch" where, as broadly understood as possible, different
areas of textiles were regarded as needing to keep in touch with
each other and end users in order to promote and share the best
they can offer for the welfare of their users and consumers.

Building upon Feltham and Ohlson models, this book examines
positive loss-earnings within the context of the dot.com bubble
during the boom years of the late 1990s bull market. The strong
demand for equity financing captured the imagination of investors
from Europe and U.S. like never before. With a focus on U.S.
Internet companies, the book explores both the birth and the death
of the new economy, and how negative earnings and losses still
garnered large investments and successful IPOs (Initial Public
Offerings). As Internet based ventures and the digital economy keep
attracting large amounts of equity financing, this book explains
that there is something unique in the valuation and pricing of tech
companies. The book was written for corporate financiers, capital
market professionals, and academics to further their understanding
of equity valuation and the effects of equity trading.
