Truth and power have a difficult relationship. Decision makers are
often required to make judgements that depend upon specialized
knowledge and thus reluctantly surrender power. They are apt to
reject advice inconsistent with their perceived interests,
experiences and cognitive capacities. Speaking Truth to Power aims
to guide the reader through the tangled relationship between truth
and power, manifesting as the interplay between experts and
decision-makers in society. Through a combination of careful
observation and original analysis, the authors draw out the
incentives and tensions that drive the relationship between these
actors. They review some of the history of expertise, consider the
values of experts and decision-makers, and analyze what has
succeeded and what has failed as truth and power have worked
together and against one another, primarily in the U.S. but also
drawing on international examples. Policymaking professionals,
academic experts interested in evidence-based policymaking and
graduate and undergraduate students in public policy, government,
or political science will value this assessment of truth and power.

One summer evening, Lib Hanson is confronted by her painful past
when Matt Marlow, the forty-year-old son she abandoned as an
infant, shows up on her porch. Fiercely independent, Lib has never
revealed her son's existence-or her previous marriage-to her
husband, Jack. Married nearly three decades but living in separate
houses (to the confusion but acceptance of their neighbors), they
enjoy an ease and comfort together in small-town Anthem, Wisconsin.
But Jack is a stickler for honesty, and Lib's long-dormant secret
threatens to unravel their lives. When ten-year-old Charlie Taylor
arrives at Jack's workshop shortly thereafter, he's not the first
kid in town to need help with a flat tire, and Jack gladly makes
the repair to his bike. The Taylors are new to Anthem, and Jack
soon discovers that Charlie and his mom, Claire, are struggling to
fit in, even as Charlie's dad, Dan, is thriving in his new job.
Extending friendship and kindness, as well as introductions around
the local cafE, Jack assumes a grandfatherly role. What he doesn't
see is the drinking that Claire hides from everyone, or the secret
son that Lib has allowed to move into her house and the growing
attraction between Claire and Matt. When the terrible events of a
fateful evening threaten everyone's carefully crafted lives, Jack,
Lib, and their new friends must each determine the value of truth
for the ones they love.
Zombie horror starring Billy Zane, Dee Wallace and Mischa Barton.
The youthful residents of the small town of Elwood spend their days
training under the command of veteran Seiler (Zane) who prides
himself in preparing the next generation for their future of
fighting off zombies. The hordes of the undead, brought back to
life by a virus that has wiped out the rest of humanity, lurk on
the other side of Elwood's perimeter fence, waiting for any
opportunists who wish to step outside. While the rest of the town
fight over the cause of the virus, the 'zombie killers' put their
training into action to defend their homes and families. The cast
also includes Gabrielle Stone, Felissa Rose and Brian Anthony
Wilson.
Assembled by Allen Ginsberg, Selected Poems 1947-1995 is the definitive collection of the best works of one of the most influential and revolutionary poets of the twentieth century. Allen Ginsberg, famous for helping catalyze the Beat Generation, wrote poetry for more than fifty years. His innovative verse and provocative attitudes of spiritual, political, and sexual liberation inspired countless poets, musicians, and visual and performance artists worldwide, and helped shape several generations' views of the world. Selected Poems 1947-1995 commemorates Ginsberg's brilliant career as one of America's most distinguished poets. Here are well-known masterpieces such as the lyric "Howl" and the narrative "Kaddish" -- classic works of American literature -- as well as more recent gems, including the long dream poem "White Shroud," the visionary "After Lalon," and the political rock lyric "The Ballad of the Skeletons," a song he recorded in 1996 with a stellar band that included Philip Glass, Lenny Kaye, and Paul McCartney.
Why does the American political system work the way it does? This
major revision brings a renewed focus to the institutions,
processes and data that illuminate big questions about governance
and representation in the United States. With a new adaptive
learning tool, this edition does more than ever to help students
understand how American government developed over time and how it
works today.
Louis Ginzberg's great compendium of Jewish legends, myths and
ancient lore challenge readers to understand the civilization
behind the greatest prophecies and holy writings ever written.
Volume One begins with the years of creation, detailing God's
creation of the Earth and all the lands and creatures upon it.
Man's creation, and the story of Adam and Eve, are duly related, as
are the ten generations which separated Adam from Noah. Volume Two,
roughly corresponding with the Biblical Books of Exodus and Job,
begins with the life and death of Joseph. His life and the lives of
Jacob's sons - the founders of the Jewish tribes - are likewise
told. Volume Three commences with Moses finally deciding to lead
the Jews out of Egypt, the oppression of the Pharaoh having become
too much to bear. Volume Four opens with the story of Joshua, who
was the servant of Moses and one of the twelve spies who scouted
the lands of Canaan at Moses' behest.
This book places long overdue focus on the Palestine solidarity
films of two important Arab women directors whose cinematic works
have never received due attention within the scholarly literature
or the cultural public sphere. Through an analysis that situates
these largely overlooked films within the matrix of an anti-Zionist
critique of cinematic ontology, this book offers a materialist
feminist appreciation of their political aesthetics while
critiquing the ideological enabling conditions of their academic
absenting. The study of these daring films fosters a much-needed,
sustained understanding of the meaning and significance of
Palestine solidarity filmmaking for and within the Arab world.
