As national political fights are waged at the state level, democracy itself pays the price Over the past generation, the Democratic and Republican parties have each become nationally coordinated political teams. American political institutions, on the other hand, remain highly decentralized. Laboratories against Democracy shows how national political conflicts are increasingly flowing through the subnational institutions of state politics—with profound consequences for public policy and American democracy. Jacob Grumbach argues that as Congress has become more gridlocked, national partisan and activist groups have shifted their sights to the state level, nationalizing state politics in the process and transforming state governments into the engines of American policymaking. He shows how this has had the ironic consequence of making policy more varied across the states as red and blue party coalitions implement increasingly distinct agendas in areas like health care, reproductive rights, and climate change. The consequences don’t stop there, however. Drawing on a wealth of new data on state policy, public opinion, money in politics, and democratic performance, Grumbach traces how national groups are using state governmental authority to suppress the vote, gerrymander districts, and erode the very foundations of democracy itself. Required reading for this precarious moment in our politics, Laboratories against Democracy reveals how the pursuit of national partisan agendas at the state level has intensified the challenges facing American democracy, and asks whether today’s state governments are mitigating the political crises of our time—or accelerating them.

The series of annual Asian Computing Science Conferences (ASIAN) was ini- ated in 1995 by AIT, INRIA and UNU/IIST to provide a forum for researchers in computer science from the Asian region and to promote interaction with - searchers from other regions. The ?rst nine conferences were held respectively in Bangkok, Singapore, Katmandu, Manila, Phuket, Penang, Hanoi, Mumbai and Chiang Mai. The 10th ASIAN conference was held in Kunming, China, December 7-9, 2005. Each year, the conference focuses on a di?erent theme at the cutting edge of computer science research. The theme of ASIAN 2005 was data management on the Web. Four distinguished speakers were invited to the conference: M- iano Consens (University of Toronto), Richard Hull (Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies), TovaMilo(TelAvivUniversity)andPrabhakarRaghavan(Yahoo Research and Stanford University). This year, 91 papers were submitted from 11 countries. The Program C- mittee selected 17 regular papers and 21 short papers. This volume contains the papers based on the invited talks, the regular papers, and the short papers. We wish to thank the Program Committee and the external referees for their work in selecting the contributed papers
A summary of research carried out in the CHOROCHRONOS Project, established as an EC-funded Training and Mobility Research Network with the objective of studying the design, implementation, and application of spatio-temporal database management systems. The nine coherent chapters by leading research groups are written in a tutorial style, making the research contributions of the project accessible to a wider audience interested in spatio-temporal information processing. Following an introductory overview, the book presents chapters on ontologies for spatio-temporal databases, conceptual models, spatio-temporal models and languages, access methods and query processing, architectures and implementation of spatio-temporal DBMS, interactive spatio-temporal documents, and future perspectives.
Critical Service Learning Toolkit offers a strengths-based, interdisciplinary approach to promoting social competence while enhancing emotional and academic skill development. Designed as a user-friendly guide to carrying out successful CSL projects, this Toolkit provides practitioners with step-by-step assistance in planning, implementing, and evaluating Critical Service Learning (CSL) projects in elementary and high schools. CSL trains youth to become active and conscientious citizens through engagement and leadership experiences that meet real needs in the community. This approach is unique in that it places the youth/student at the center of the process. Prioritizing social and emotional learning (SEL) and school engagement, CSL changes the role of the school-based, counseling professional into that of a facilitator who encourages skill-building, reflection, and civic engagement. Cultivating self-awareness, social-consciousness, and critical-thinking skills, brainstorming and community web mapping activities serve as the cornerstone of CSL and allow youth to become comfortable articulating concerns about their communities. By extending learning beyond the classroom and into the community, CSL enhances what is taught throughout the school curriculum, at all levels, and fosters a sense of civic responsibility and social agency.
In this elegant meditation on age and memory, Grumbach's grace,
humor, and insight alert us to the transience of each day and the
constant play between past and present.
Last year, faced with a rare opportunity to experiment with solitude, acclaimed author Doris Grumbach decided to live for 50 days in her coastal Maine home, rarely speaking to anyone. The result of her experience is a beautiful meditation about what it means to write, to be alone, and to come to terms with mortality. A New York Times Notable Book of 1994. Line art.
It records an eventful and quotidian year crowded with literary pleasures and pains, the natural beauties and social particulars of life in coastal Maine, the mingled joys and affronts of travel to New York, Washington, Mexico, and the looming presence of illness and mortality. It is, finally, a book about the successful search for home and for inward peace.
The Magician's Girl tells the story of three New York women who meet at Barnard in the late 1930s and fulfill their separate destinies from the 1940s to 1978. Lyrical, dramatic, and wise, Grumbach's novel is rich with evocations of America's past, from the flavors of New York City to academic life in the 1970s.
"Boldly imagined, subtly crafted . . . eloquently documents the existence of women who lived as they wished to, instead of as society expected them to." Catherine Stimpson, New York Times Book Review "Grumbach is acutely sensitive to the quiet hum of everyday living and the small acquired habits that bond lovers over long periods. It is especially touching to watch the women age as the pages turn, affecting a kind of time-lapse realism that doesn't diminish the Ladies' passion or love for each other." Diane Salvatore, Ms.
The Missing Person is a daring work that tells the story of Franny Fuller, the sexy, voluptuous movie star whose glorious blonde mane and whispery voice have aroused the fascination of every gossip columnist and moviegoer in the country. But beneath her radiant, compelling image lives still the frightened little girl from upstate New York. Define only by the way the studios, the flacks, her husbands and lovers, and the public perceive her, Franny Fuller is a missing person, no more tangible than the image projected of her on a thousand silver screens. Framing her portrait of Franny Fuller within a persuasive and moving story, Doris Grumbach has created a haunting work that probes the private misery behind public glamour."
