A study of the life and background of 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani,
putative founder of the Qadiriyya order, investigating the sources
for his life and attributed works. The book seeks to elucidate the
ideas of al-Jilani, and to formulate a picture of the most
prominent trends of pious and mystical thought in Baghdad during
the twelfth century, providing a cultural and geographical angle to
the study of Islamic mysticism and piety.
Virginia Held assesses the ethics of care as a promising
alternative to the familiar moral theories that serve so
inadequately to guide our lives. The ethics of care is only a few
decades old, yet it is by now a distinct moral theory or normative
approach to the problems we face. It is relevant to global and
political matters as well as to the personal relations that can
most clearly exemplify care.
This book clarifies just what the ethics of care is: what its
characteristics are, what it holds, and what it enables us to do.
It discusses the feminist roots of this moral approach and why the
ethics of care can be a morality with universal appeal. Held
examines what we mean by "care," and what a caring person is like.
Where other moral theories demand impartiality above all, the
ethics of care understands the moral import of our ties to our
families and groups. It evaluates such ties, focusing on caring
relations rather than simply on the virtues of individuals. The
book proposes how such values as justice, equality, and individual
rights can "fit together" with such values as care, trust, mutual
consideration, and solidarity.
In the second part of the book, Held examines the potential of the
ethics of care for dealing with social issues. She shows how the
ethics of care is more promising than Kantian moral theory and
utilitarianism for advice on how expansive, or not, markets should
be, and on when other values than market ones should prevail. She
connects the ethics of care with the rising interest in civil
society, and considers the limits appropriate for the language of
rights. Finally, she shows the promise of the ethics of care for
dealing with global problems and seeinganew the outlines of
international civility.
For many individuals, pornography is a troubling and problematic
issue. Regardless of how the public views this topic, one thing is
clear: Pornography is as prevalent and accessible as smartphones
and laptop computers. Indeed, beyond traditional hardcore material,
a pornographic sensibility can be seen permeating all aspects of
culture from tween and young teen fashions to television and
commercially successful films. In fact, pornography is so
widespread that more often than not it is taken as a given in our
modern social space. We assume all people look at or know about
pornography, but to some, the thought of engaging in intellectual
discussions about the topic strikes many particularly scholars as
beneath them. And yet something this impactful, this definitive of
modern culture, needs to be laid open to scrutiny. In The
Philosophy of Pornography: Contemporary Perspectives, Lindsay
Coleman and Jacob M. Held offer a collection of essays covering a
wide range of viewpoints from issues of free speech and porn s role
in discrimination to the impact of porn on sexuality. These essays
investigate the philosophical implications of pornography as a part
of how we now seek to conceive and express our sexuality in
contemporary life. Contributors to this volume discuss:
.pornography as a component of gender and sexual socialization
.ecological understandings of sexually explicit media
.subordination, sexualization, and speech .feminism and pornography
.pornography s depiction of love and friendship .black women and
pornography .playfulness, creativity, and porn s possibilities
Because its subject matter sex, gender, interpersonal
relationships, and even love is reflective of who we are and what
kind of society we want to create, pornography demands serious
treatment. So whether one chooses to accept pornography as a fact
of modern culture or not, this collection of timely essays
represents a variety of voices in the ongoing debate. As such, The
Philosophy of Pornography will be of interest to not only those who
are engaged in porn studies but also to an audience educated in and
conversant with recent trends in philosophy."

Eastern Europe has been in ongoing crisis since the breakup of
the Soviet Union. This important book provides basic, up-to-date
information on the events and background that have led up to the
current crisis, and the volume includes helpful maps and
photographs of key figures and scenes of everyday life. Librarians
will value this reference tool as a reliable, informative source
for students and others trying to understand today's conflicts. The
volume covers all of the countries that formed the colonial empire
of the Soviet Union--Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, the German
Democratic Republic (East Germany), Hungary, Poland, Romania, and
former Yugoslavia.
In an introductory essay, Held begins with an overview of the
region's general characteristics and history prior to 1945. The
volume is then divided into separate sections on each country. Each
section includes basic information about the country, a map, and a
chronology followed by entries, arranged alphabetically, on people,
places, political parties, and the events that have shaped the
country's history since 1945. The book is the only comprehensive
one-volume dictionary on East European personalities, politicians,
and history since 1945.
Gender roles have been debated for centuries, and now Sarah Bessey
offers a clarion freedom call for all who want to realize their
giftedness and potential in the kingdom of God. Through a
thoughtful review of biblical teaching and church practices, Bessey
shares how following Jesus made a feminist out of her.
This richly illustrated textbook covers modern statistical methods
with applications in medicine, epidemiology and biology. Firstly,
it discusses the importance of statistical models in applied
quantitative research and the central role of the likelihood
function, describing likelihood-based inference from a frequentist
viewpoint, and exploring the properties of the maximum likelihood
estimate, the score function, the likelihood ratio and the Wald
statistic. In the second part of the book, likelihood is combined
with prior information to perform Bayesian inference. Topics
include Bayesian updating, conjugate and reference priors, Bayesian
point and interval estimates, Bayesian asymptotics and empirical
Bayes methods. It includes a separate chapter on modern numerical
techniques for Bayesian inference, and also addresses advanced
topics, such as model choice and prediction from frequentist and
Bayesian perspectives. This revised edition of the book "Applied
Statistical Inference" has been expanded to include new material on
Markov models for time series analysis. It also features a
comprehensive appendix covering the prerequisites in probability
theory, matrix algebra, mathematical calculus, and numerical
analysis, and each chapter is complemented by exercises. The text
is primarily intended for graduate statistics and biostatistics
students with an interest in applications.
In this volume some of the world's leading analysts of
globalization discuss the economic, political and ethical
implications of global economic integration. They assess the
benefits and the costs of globalization and suggest strategies for
reconciling it with the interests and aspirations of the people in
all regions of the world.
The contributors understand globalization not as a uniform
process that should be praised or condemned in its entirety, but as
a complex phenomenon that can and must be shaped and steered
towards socially desirable goals. They reject the idea that the
results of market processes are inexorable or invariably
beneficial. On the contrary, they call for a robust global
governance that is attentive to normative commitments - the common
good, social justice, and democratic accountability - and does not
reflect the overwhelming power of a handful of governments and
corporate interests.
"Taming Globalization" offers a fresh look at a much-debated
topic, and sets out new ideas for curtailing and overcoming the
negative aspects of global economic change. Contributors include
Robert E. Goodin, David Held, Robert O. Keohane, John Gerard
Ruggie, Joseph E. Stiglitz, and Robert Hunter Wade

Within each stage, key concepts are covered to give learners not
only the skills they need to use technology effectively, but also
the knowledge in how to do so creatively, safely and
collaboratively: A* Understand how modern technology works A* Use a
wide range of computer hardware and software for analytical and
creative tasks A* Use the internet safely, respectfully, and
