This Handbook addresses why political science programs teach the
research process and how instructors come to teach these courses
and develop their pedagogy. Contributors offer diverse perspectives
on pedagogy, student audience, and the role of research in their
curricula. Across four sections-information literacy, research
design, research methods, and research writing-authors share
personal reflections that showcase the evolution of their pedagogy.
Each chapter offers best practices that can serve the wider
community of teachers. Ultimately, this text focuses less on the
technical substance of the research process and more on the
experiences that have guided instructors' philosophies and
practices related to teaching it.
Televised debates between the nominees of the two major parties
have become standard fare in contemporary presidential election
campaigns. The authors of this important volume maintain that
television has altered the very nature of presidential debates
profoundly, that the demands of television have dictated the
structure and formats of contemporary debates, and that the visual
content of presidential debates plays an important role in the way
that candidates exercise influence in televised debates. This
important work employs a television perspective in examining the
sponsorship, formats, nature, and impacts of presidential debates,
stressing the 1960, 1976, 1980, 1984, and 1988 debates. The authors
assert that in order to understand contemporary political debates,
one must understand how television communicates and exercises
influence in this context. Hellweg, Pfau, and Brydon integrate
contemporary theory and research about the television medium and
influence with extensive research on presidential debates. Specific
topics include how presidential debates have evolved as a function
of the participation of the broadcast industry, how debates are
structured to fit the demands of the television medium, how
candidates' verbal messages must be tailored to the medium, how
candidates' visual messages are defined through the medium, and the
persuasive effects of mediated debates. Televised Presidential
Debates will be particularly useful to scholars and students of
political communication, campaigns and elections, and mass media.
The new edition of this atlas integrates all significant advances
made in the past 15 years in molecular pathology, tumor virology, and
genetics of cervical cancer. It emphasizes the importance of these
advances in facilitating its pathological diagnosis and in op-
mizing clinical management and prognosis. A new chapter on
immunohistochemistry has been added, which includes refined
detection methods,e. g. ,the overexpression of INK4a p16 as a
molecular marker in the early differential diagnosis of
premalignant - sions. The section on etiology and pathogenesis in
human papillomavirus-induced neoplasia has been incorporated to
represent new insights into the sequences of cel- lar and nuclear
deregulation at the molecular level. All chapters have been revised
to - clude the newest advances and relevant experiences in how to
interpret and manage cervical disease; they are supported by the
addition of 35 new microphotographic ill- trations. The tumor
nomenclature is adapted to the latest edition of the WHO classi-
cation; the morphology code of the international classification of
diseases for oncology (ICD-O) has been added. We have also updated
the list of references by adding recent relevant publications.
Again, the staff of Springer-Verlag deserve our thanks for their
patience and skill in preparing the manuscript and in reproducing
the microphotographs. Heidelberg,February 2005 Gisela

Trunk Heading2 Preface to the First Edition During the past decade
our understanding of the histopathology of the cervix uteri has
changed greatly.
Denis Diderot (1713-1784) was one of the French philosophers and
writers of the Enlightenment. This volume contains the first
English translations of his plays, The Illegitimate Son and The
Father of the Family. These complex and very entertaining plays
delve into the attitudes of the middle-class, bourgeois society and
reveal an eighteenth-century "suburbia" that populates dramatic and
suspenseful situations and settings. The translations are vivid and
contemporary and bring the plays alive to early
twenty-first-century stage and culture.
The challenges that women face as political candidates can be
compounded by race. In the case of Latinas, stereotypes as well as
national media coverage and labeling of "Latino" issues potentially
creates an electoral burden for Latina candidates at the local,
state, and national level. The intersection of race and gender is
complicated and often creates more questions than it answers. How
are Latinas elected? Are they served by this complex identity or
hindered by it? Latinas in American Politics: Embracing and
Changing Political Tradition begins addressing the issues by
examining the stereotypes Latinas face while running for political
office. More specifically, the perception of voters on ideological
standings of Latinas provides insight as to what party Latinas are
identified with and how they can use this to their advantage. In
addition to establishing the role stereotypes play in the
electability of Latinas, the way they use and diffuse these
stereotypes via campaigns is examined. The images that Latinas
present and how they interact with voters via social media
establishes a new dynamic in campaigning and allows for theory
building in the area of race, gender, and campaigns. Aside from
campaigning, party identification for a Latina creates a different
barrier. How do Latinas bridge this? Case studies of prominent
Latina officials are examined to understand within which contexts
and under what conditions Latinas as candidates and as elected
officials will experience intersectionality as advantage and
disadvantage. Finally, the examination of Latina congressional
members shows whether and how the intersection of gender and
ethnicity in descriptive representation contributes uniquely to
patterns of substantive representation. Ultimately, this volume
demonstrates how the intersection of race and gender creates unique
situations for representation and electability of candidates.
This timely volume is an engaging look at presidential candidate
images, featuring a wide range of essays that dissect how these
images are formed and manipulated during campaigns. As more and
more emphasis is placed on a candidates persona and how it affects
our voting decisions, Kenneth Hackers book provides a variety of
frameworks and cases for analyzing candidate images in past,
current, and future elections.

This endlessly informative and inspiring guide to interior design
shows how sensory perception is the key to creating a happy place
inside your own home. What do you see, hear, and smell when you
walk in your front door? Do you feel safe and relaxed? Is it too
warm or too cold? As people spend increasing amounts of time in
their homes, it's more important than ever to feel at peace there.
Achieving that feeling of comfort can mean different things for
different people but, as interior design expert Marion Hellweg
shows us, there are basic principles of home design that work for
every style of life and architecture. Gorgeously designed and
presented, this book first explains how our sensory perception
affects us and influences our wellbeing. It then follows up with
lavishly illustrated sections that explore a variety of ways to
optimize our sensory perceptions throughout our homes: the language
of color and form; the influence of natural and artificial light;
the basics of room layout; haptics and acoustics; incorporating
plants and nature; optimal sleeping conditions; the importance of a
healthy kitchen; common spaces and privacy; ergonomics and
furniture design. There are interviews with a wide range of experts
who offer deeper insights into each subject; there are links to
sources; and countless practical tips and advice. Filled with
visual ideas from contemporary living spaces across the world, this
book shows how stimulating the senses in the right way will help
make our homes as comfortable as they can be.

This is the first and only book of portraits of android and
humanoid robots. The robots in these photographs by Max
Aguilera-Hellweg, a photojournalist for 40 years whose work has
appeared in Life, NYT Magazine, Rolling Stone, Discover, Scientific
American, Time, and National Geographic, are some of the most well
known in the world of humanoid robotics. The photographs explore
the many ways scientists and engineers are creating robots with
human attributes, qualities, and abilities, and the means by which
the robots engage us in what is known as human-robot interaction.
The relationship of humans to robots can be as subtle as nonverbal
communication; as intuitive as whether you should pass someone on
the left or pass on the right to avoid sidewalk salsa; as intimate
as developing an affectionate personal relationship with a machine,
or as never before conceived of, but now as important as life and
death—autonomous robots programmed for ethical decision making in
the battlefield. Author and photographer Max Aguilera-Hellweg has
embarked on a journey through Japan and the United States to
explore the turning point in the evolution of robot science, where
robots are becoming more like humans, crossing the great divide
between data processing and sentience. Humanoid's breathtaking
photographs present android robots designed to look and act like a
human, beyond the imaginary Data from the TV series Star Trek,
Pris, the replicant (played by Daryl Hannah) in the movie Blade
Runner, or the "synths" of the hit TV series Humans. Some of the
humanoid robots portrayed in this profound book, such as Bina48,
Joey Chaos, and Geminoid-F have humanlike skin, hair, hands, even
fingernails—they have been created to resemble with extreme
accuracy an actual human being. Other humanoids are devoid of such
external attributes but replicate the anatomy of a human—arms,
legs, torso, a head and eyes—like, for example, the Terminator,
not as Arnold Schwarzenegger but when he is all machine. Some of
Aguilera-Hellweg's photographs reveal the different ways robot
scientists approach the same engineering and design problem.
BioBiped1, for instance, a humanoid based on biomimetics, comprised
of a torso and pair of legs, has joints and moving parts modeled on
human biology and systems, harnessing what nature has solved.
Another such humanoid, aptly named Vocal Robot, consists of a pair
of artificial lungs and a vocal chord from which it speaks. During
the creation of many of these photos, an hour-long documentary, Au
Couer des Robots (In the Heart of Robots), was shot. The
English-language version is in postproduction and will soon seek
distribution here and internationally. Max Aguilera-Hellweg's
astonishing, gorgeous photography open our eyes to this brave new
world in which humanoid robots—exciting, thrilling, frightening
to some, strange to others, controversial, lifesaving—will change
our lives in countless ways.
Motivation The other day I was waiting at the station for my train.
Next to me a young lady was nonchalantly leaning against the wall.
Suddenly, she took a cigarette pack out of her handbag, pulled out
the last cigarette, put it between her lips, crushed the empty
pack, threw it on the ground and hedonistically lit the cigarette.
I thought to myself, "What a behavior? ." The nearest trashcan was
just five meters away. So I bent down, took the crushed pack and
gave it back to her, saying that she had lost it. She looked at me
in a rather deranged way, but she said nothing and of waste to the
trashcan. brought the piece Often people are not aware of the waste
they produce. They get rid of it and that's it. As soon as the
charming lady dropped the cigarette pack, the problem was solved
for her. The pack was on the ground and it suddenly no longer
belonged to her. It is taken for granted that somebody else will do
the cleaning up. There is a saying that nature does not produce
waste. For long as humans obtained the goods they needed from the
ground where they lived, the waste that was produced could be
handled by nature. This has drastically changed due to urbanization
and waste produced by human activities has become a severe burden.
Reevaluation of tumor classification, differential diagnosis and

Few subjects in gynecology, let alone in medicine in general, have
provoked such inter est or study as cervical cancer. Although the
wealth of monographs and books publish ed on the subject would seem
to obviate the need for more, the great advances made in the
medical sciences and in gynecological experience and techniques in
recent years call for, if not require, a new book on cervical
cancer to bring together the latest ideas and trends in its methods
of study, diagnosis, and treatment. Although precancerous lesions
have become more common, the number of women developing invasive
cervical carcinomas has not increased, owing in part to programs of
patient education, in part to screening examinations sponsored by
the government. The gynecologist is now able to detect with
well-tried and proved techniques precan cerous states of the
cervix, and to treat these effectively before they become invasive
cancer. Accordingly, recent interests in cervical cancer have
shifted from the classic descrip tion of invasive carcinoma to
newer studies of cause, diagnosis, therapy, and terminol ogy of its
precursors. As the reader will learn, epidemiological studies as
guides for the future account for, and justifiably so, an important
part of this book. New knowledge about changes in the morphology of
cervical carcinoma confirms its dependency on hormonal stimulation.
Furthermore, modem experiences serve to explain which therapy is
best. Overlapping of concepts and opinions between some chapters
could not be avoided."
During the past ten years numerous new findings have been
documented in the field of gynecological pathology, especially in
respect of neoplasms. These findings have been generated by the
application of recently developed techniques of immunology and
molecular biology. However, clinicopathologic examinations. are
still an absolute requirement for the morphologic evaluation of
neoplasms, including gynecological tumors. The International
Society of Gynecological Pathologists (ISGYP) has contributed
greatly to the progress within gynecological pathology. The ISGYP
Nomenclature Committee has promoted the International Histological
Classification of Gynecological Tumors under the auspices of the W
orid Health Organization. A new edition of the classification of
tumors and tumor-like conditions of trophoblastic disease, uterine
corpus, cervix, vagina, and vulva is currently in press. A second
volume covering the ovaries, fallopian tubes, broad ligament, and
female peritoneum will be published later. Organization of
scientific symposia and seminars has also been an important
activity of the ISGYP. The present editor organized and chaired a
symposium entitled "Recent Progress in Diagnostic Pathology of
Gynecological Tumors" held in Sendai, Japan on 11 April 1986 in
close cooperation with Prof. T. Okagaki, University of Minnesota
Medical School, and under the joint auspices ofthe ISGYP and the
Japanese Society of Pathology. The following topics were discussed
at this symposium: - Immunocytochemistry of gestational

Erfahrungen an drei deutschen Frauenkliniken kleine Erganzun- gen
und Variationen. Einige Lander, Z. B. Israel verfUgen tiber groBe
epi- demiologische Untersuchungen, deren Ergebnisse korrelierend
aufgenom- men sind. Zur klinischen Diagnostik wurden in den letzten
lahren mo- dernste Untersuchungsmt;thoden neu eingefUhrt; ihre
Anwendung setzt jedoch individuell anzupassende kritische
Indikationsstellungen voraus. AbschlieBend werden die sich sehr
differenziert auf der histologischen Diagnostik aufbauenden
modernen Moglichkeiten einer gezielten Thera- pie der
Ovarialtumoren ausfUhrlich diskutiert.
Vordergrund stehen.

does more than offer an architectural survey of tiny homes-it
illustrates room-by-room real world examples of how people are
adopting a sustainable lifestyle that minimizes things and
maximizes quality of life. Inspiring as well as practical, this
book is the first step toward imagining and creating your own small
happy place.
