The Ballad of Halo Jones meets Becky Chambers’ Wayfarers by way
of 3:10 to Yuma; a clash of law and lawlessness, storytelling and
truth in a headlong romp across the stars. After fifty years of
wreaking havoc across the galaxy, the outlaw Nine Lives – aka
Former General Gabi Ortiz – has finally met her match. Outgunned
at the system’s edge, she surrenders to the implacable
Inter-Planetary Marshal Dao Prynne, on one condition: she will go
quietly if, during the long journey to back to Prosper, she is
allowed to tell her story once and in full to the known worlds, to
ensure she is never forgotten. As Ortiz’s story unfolds, Prynne
realises she is no longer certain of anything, least of all
Ortiz’s guilt. And worse, powerful forces are determined that the
former General will not reach Prosper alive. Soon Prynne finds
herself protecting the very woman she intended to deliver to
justice. But unbeknownst to her, Ortiz has an ace up her sleeve,
and help – in the form of old friends – can arrive in the most
unexpected of ways…
The Normandy landings of 6 June 1944, across five sectors of the
French coast - Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword - constituted the
largest amphibious invasion in history. This study analyses in
depth the preparations and implementation of the D-Day landing on
Gold Beach by XXX Corps. Historians have tended to dismiss the
landing on Gold Beach as straightforward but the evidence points to
a different reality. Armour supported the infantry landing and
prior bombing was intended to weaken German defences; however, the
bulk of the bombing landed too far inland, and many craft foundered
in difficult conditions at sea. It was the tenacity of the assault
units and the flexibility of the follow up units which enabled the
Gold landing to secure the right flank of the British Army in
Normandy. Using detailed primary evidence from The National
Archives and the Imperial War Museum, this volume provides a
substantial assessment of the background to the landing on Gold,
and analyses the events of D-Day in the wider context of the
Normandy Campaign.
Ever the Leader gathers together selected speeches and writings
from one of the great scholars and commentators of higher
education. William G. Bowen's career at Princeton University--from
economics professor to provost to a sixteen-year tenure as
president--was marked by extraordinary accomplishments during times
of great change, both at the university and in the country. But it
was in Bowen's second act, as president of the Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation and founding chairman of ITHAKA, that he took the
lessons he learned as a highly productive leader of one of the
nation's most esteemed universities and applied them to a broader
set of problems in higher education. This volume of work from
Bowen's later career captures this expansion of his thought and
influence. Comprising remarks and articles on the subjects of
university values, educational opportunity, college sports,
technology, and Bowen's own colleagues and friends, Ever the Leader
is more than just a concise distillation of Bowen's research and
thinking on some of the most urgent issues of the day--it is a
portrait of leadership in action. The selected papers, talks, and
articles exemplify Bowen's commitment and singular ability to
communicate strong, persuasive arguments for change, and to
motivate others to engage with the truly hard questions facing
higher education leaders. Filled with formidable insights, Ever the
Leader will be required reading for university presidents,
policymakers, and all those who carry on the struggle for equity
and excellence in higher education.
Trained as an assault brigade, the 56th landed on D-Day and
successfully liberated Bayeux the following day. It was then
employed in the crossing of the River Seine and the assault on,
before fighting across Belgium and Holland culminating in the final
assault on Arnhem in April 1945, by which time the brigade had
served in four different divisions. No previous study has sought to
explain how an infantry brigade is used in battle, let alone one
holding the title Independent Holborn considers the styles of war
as carried out by British forces and casts new light on the
effectiveness of British infantry units and their contribution to
war effort. Extensive use has been made of previously unseen
primary evidence from The National Archives, IWM Archive and
Regimental Museums. The evidence is used to explore issues
pertinent to life in the Army at home during the war, training for
war and the Campaign in North West Europe, as well as the role of
the battalion.
Inspired by the work of an earlier generation of Japanese
photographers, especially by Shomei Tomatsu, and by William
Klein’s seminal photographic book on New York, Daido Moriyama
moved from Osaka to Tokyo in the early sixties to become a
photographer. He became the leading exponent of a fierce new
photographic style that corresponded perfectly to the abrasive and
intense climate of Tokyo during a period of great social upheaval.
His black and white pictures were marked by fierce contrast and
fragmentary, even scratched, frames, which concealed his virtuoso
printing. Between June 1972 and July 1973 he produced his own
magazine publication, Kiroku, which was then referred to as Record.
It became a diaristic journal of his work as it developed. Ten
years ago he was able to resume publication of Record, which
gradually expanded in extent. To date he has published thirty
issues, a number of them including colour. The publication of
Record as a book enables work from all thirty issues to be edited
into a single sequence, punctuated by Moriyama’s own text as it
appeared in the magazines. It used to be assumed that Moriyama’s
peculiarly Japanese style was tied to his Tokyo roots. The evidence
of the last ten years demonstrates that Moriyama, a restless world
traveller, has been able to apply his unique vision to northern
Europe, southern France, the cities of Florence, London, Barcelona,
Taipei, Hong Kong, New York and Los Angeles as well as to the
alleys of Osaka, and the landscape of Hokkaido. The book ends in
Afghanistan.
Antony Gormley occupies an unusual position as a highly popular
sculptor - known chiefly for his Angel of the North (1998), a
national landmark in the UK - who is also widely regarded as one of
the most intellectually challenging artists working
internationally. He is grounded in archaeology and anthropology,
and looks to Asian and Buddhist traditions as much as to Western
sculptural history, which he believes reached a punctuation point
with Rodin. This is the first book to focus on Gormley's thoughts
on sculpture, positioning his career and artistic philosophy in
relation to its history. The book is structured thematically over
four chapters: the first explores Gormley's thoughts on the body,
time and space in relation to major works including European Field
(1993) and 'Still Standing' (2011), Gormley's rehang of the
classical rooms at the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. The
second chapter, 'Sculptors', was first delivered as a series of
five lectures for the BBC; in each, Gormley discusses a sculpture
he considers to be of huge creative importance: Epstein's The Rock
Drill (1913-15), Brancusi's The Endless Column (1935-38),
Giacometti's La Place (1948-49), Joseph Beuys's Plight (1985) and
Richard Serra's The Matter of Time (2005). In the third chapter,
Gormley outlines the influence of Buddhist and Jain sculpture on
his work and ideas, and the fourth showcases the artist's most
recent sculptures.

This landmark book offers a synthesis of celebrated Magnum
photographer Susan Meiselas's views on her work and the role of the
documentary photographer. Through text drawn largely from exclusive
interviews with editor Mark Holborn, she offers a remarkable
commentary on her career, from early work with carnival strippers,
through groundbreaking reportage on Nicaragua and El Salvador, to
projects encompassing subjects as varied as the Dani tribe of
Indonesia, the Kurds of Northern Iraq and victims of domestic
violence in California. Central to Meiselas's work are themes of
collaboration, return and exchange. With over 110 photographs -
some classics, others rarely published - this book demonstrates how
the frontline on which Meiselas has worked involves a bearing of
witness and a gathering of evidence. As Meiselas has stated: `To
continue on is to be curious - to be compelled to confront, to
examine, to expose, to engage, and not know where you will end up
or how the journey will change you. The frontline is always a
choice.'
