"Talk, Talk, Sweet Charlotte" presents a unique and often candid
investigation of certain psychological, emotional, and social
considerations typically associated with autism. It describes the
relationship that was built over a two year period when the author
worked as a one on one aide with Charlotte Tate, a junior high
student who has autism. Charlotte was non-verbal and very
aggressive toward principals, vice principals, teachers, aides, and
other students. Her behaviors had prevented her from participating
in a regular classroom environment. The author traces his work with
Charlotte and highlights qualities relating to belief, courage, and
caring in various forms. The transformation of Charlotte from "one
of the toughest kids to work with" to a student who has a "thirst
for knowledge" is an inspirational, amazing story.

Despite the loss of the French Empire, France and its former
colonies are still bound by a common historical past. With the new
global promotion of la Francophonie, the relation between the
various constituencies of the French-speaking regions of the world
is reexamined and debated in this book, through the conversation
between scholars dealing with diverse texts and contexts that
present the colonial contact and its imprint. The book illustrates
how, in France and in its other worlds, that contact, its
repercussions, and its memory are lived and expressed today in a
variety of textual representations. The historical contact between
France and its other worlds has given birth to new kinds of
cross-cultural expressions in the arts, in literature, and in
aesthetics, establishing interrelations and generating
appropriations from both sides of the Hexagon frontier,
highlighting the fluidity and the permeability of its cultural
borders. The book subtext tells that the frontier between France
and its other worlds is no more an unshakable geographical,
political, and cultural limit, but rather a line that has become
mobile, fluctuating, and permeable, and across which currents,
ideas, sensitivities, and creativity are expressed, bearing
testimony to vitality and diversity but also to a
cross-fertilization of cultures and societies (re) crossing or
meeting at that line. Seen from this latter perspective, the book
comes also as an interrogation of the inclusiveness or
exclusiveness of the words francophone and Francophonie, and, at an
academic level, a mutual exclusion of French and Francophone
Studies.
From its origins in China and Scandinavia, the sport of skiing has
come a long way to attract daring athletes, tourists and locals on
winter holiday, the chic and wealthy leisure class, and
international royalty. On the technical side, pioneering innovators
developed cutting-edge equipment that, over the years, has grown
skiing to become a fiercely competitive spectator sport while, on
the cultural side, the exciting and well-groomed stars of the ski
world and jetsetter destinations have come to define a distinctive
and popular global culture and aspirational lifestyle. The Stylish
Life: Skiing is a nostalgic and spectacular journey through alpine
history and beyond, including this singularly unique sport's
founders, superstars, influence on design and entertainment, and
the evolution of its resorts, fashion, equipment, and much more.
Sensing the World: An Anthropology of the Senses is a highly
original and comprehensive overview of the anthropology and
sociology of the body and the senses. Discussing each sense in turn
- seeing, hearing, touch, smell, and taste - Le Breton has written
a truly monumental work, vast in scope and deeply engaging in
style. Among other pioneering moves, he gives equal attention to
light and darkness, sound and silence, and his disputation of taste
explores aspects of disgust and revulsion. Part phenomenological,
part historical, this is above all a cultural account of
perception, which returns the body and the senses to the center of
social life. Le Breton is the leading authority on the anthropology
of the body and the senses in French academia. With a repute
comparable to the late Pierre Bourdieu, his 30+ books have been
translated into numerous languages. This is the first of his works
to be made available in English. This sensuously nuanced
translation of La Saveur du monde is accompanied by a spicy preface
from series editor David Howes, who introduces Le Breton's work to
an English-speaking audience and highlights its implications for
the disciplines of anthropology, sociology, and the
cross-disciplinary field of sensory studies.
This volume contains most of the talks presented at the Journ~es de
la Soci~t~ Math~ma~ique de France entitled "Rhythms in Biology and
other fields of application -Determi- nistic and Stochastic
Approaches" held in Luminy from the 14th th to the 18 of September
1981. The aim of our meeting was to bring together scien- tists
from different disciplines to discuss a common topic and to
stimulate exchanges between participants. We hope that this goal
was reached. This volume is divided into four chapters. In each one
the papers are arranged in alphabetical order by first author.
Chapters one and two contain papers devoted to descrip- tion or
modelling of rhythmic biolog.ical phenomena. Chapters three and
four deal with models for the study of rhythms invol- ving the use
of deterministic or stochastic tools capable of fruitful transfer
to Biology. We are pleased that these Proceedings appear in a
series which constitutes an interface between Biologists and
Mathema- ticians. We are indebted to all who provided us with their
help, particularly the Centre International de Rencontres
Math~matiques (C.I.R.M.) at Luminy, the Soci~t~ Mathematique de
France (S.M.F.) , the Delegation aux Relations Universitaires
Internationales (D.R.U.I.) and the Laboratoire d'Informatique et de
Math~matiques Appliquees de Grenoble (I.M.A.G.). Special thanks are
due to Mrs. A. Litman for her dedi- cation and her efficiency
throughout the organization of this meeting. G~enobie, Vecembe~

The writer Lucy Aikin (1781 1864) was the daughter of the physician
and author John Aikin and the niece of Anna Laetitia Barbauld,
whose works she edited after Barbauld's death in 1825. Given this
literary background, it is not surprising that Lucy should have
begun to write: her early works were poems, but she is best known
for her two-volume Memoirs of the Court of Queen Elizabeth (1818),
also reissued in this series. This 1864 work, edited by her niece's
husband, contains a memoir of Aikin, a collection of her essays,
and letters in which she expresses frequently humorous and often
trenchant opinions on the literary and social topics of the day,
such as the influence of wider knowledge of the German language on
English writing, or the morally elevating effect of the British
Museum. It will be appreciated by those interested in early
nineteenth-century literature and women's writing."

Anna Letitia Barbauld (1743 1825), poet, educator and essayist, is
now considered to be one of the most important writers of the early
Romantic period. Included in her highly regarded works on literary,
political, social, and other intellectual topics is the ambitious
poem Eighteen Hundred and Eleven (1812), which condemned Britain's
participation in the Napoleonic Wars. She gained recognition for
her influential elementary textbooks Lessons for Children (1778 9)
and Hymns in Prose for Children (1781), which made her name
synonymous with the instruction of infants. Her reputation
suffered, however, from attacks by critics of her poetry and
politics. This charming biography by Anna Letitia Le Breton (1808
85), her great-niece, was first published in 1874 and seeks to
bring Barbauld's name back to public attention and acclaim. It
draws on personal recollections, letters, and other family
memorabilia in the author's possession.

As COVID-19 sprawled across the world, our youth had to adjust to
life without the support of their peers, teachers, clubs, and
communities. The Unapologetic Voice House created a Young Adult
imprint called YA Stories! to give children between the ages of 11
- 17 an outlet to express themselves through.. After the
Nova is the first anthology published by YA Stories!. In
this anthology, you will find stories of perseverance and strength.
Our female-driven narratives explore themes of escape, isolation,
and the passage of time. Some stories explore the comfort of home
and school, and others span oceans, mountains, fields, and the
stars. Some stories are set in the future, others in the distant
past, but they all dwell on a common question:. How do we
pick ourselves up after a disaster?
