This book is the sequel to "Deaths in Custody: International
comparisons," also published by Whiting and Birch. It sets out to
identify examples of progress and good practice. Contributions by
leading figures in the field look at issues of definition,
vulnerability and risk, and at programmes aimed at the reduction of
custodial suicide rates from many countries.
Former Governor of Illinois, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations,
and twice unsuccessful Democratic candidate for President of the
United States, Adlai Stevenson played a key role in American
politics through out much of the middle of the twentieth century.
This collection of essays from Senator Eugene McCarthy, Senator
Adlai Stevenson III, Ambassador George Bunn, Brian Urquhart, Arthur
Schlesinger, and others, looks at Stevenson's past and current
societal significance.
'Fantastic. The benchmark for great food writing' Anthony Bourdain
'The primary requisite for writing well about food is a good
appetite' Between Meals is the gourmand and journalist A.J.
Liebling's delectable account of his time spent eating and drinking
in 1920s Paris, under the tutelage of his friend Yves Mirande, 'one
of the last of the great around-the-clock gastronomes of France'.
With gluttonous joie de vivre, he fondly recalls everything from
glorious dining ('A leg of lamb larded with anchovies, artichokes
on a pedestal of foie gras, and four or five kinds of cheese') to
bad rosé ('a pinkish cross between No-Cal and vinegar'), and an
ill-fated sojourn at a Swiss slimming-clinic. Witty, tart and full
of gusto, this is a love song to food, wine and Paris. 'Liebling
transfers excitement, warmth, wit and information ... as hearty and
explicit as good Calvados' The New York Times Book Review With an
introduction by James Salter
As the number of prisoners in the UK, USA and elsewhere continues
to rise, so have concerns risen about the damaging social and
psychological effects of imprisonment - on prisoners themselves, on
their families, on prison employees, on the communities they leave
behind and, indeed, on society itself. This book brings together a
group of leading, international authorities in prisons research to
address the complex issues of the effects of imprisonment, to
assess the implications and results of research in this field, and
to suggest ways of mitigating the often devastating personal and
psychological consequences of imprisonment.
Written by a pioneer in the field, this overview of charged
particle optics provides a solid introduction to the subject area
for all physicists wishing to design their own apparatus or better
understand the instruments with which they work. It begins by
introducing electrostatic lenses and fields used for acceleration,
focusing and deflection of ions or electrons. Subsequent chapters
give detailed descriptions of electrostatic deflection elements,
uniform and non-uniform magnetic sector fields, image aberrations,
and, finally, fringe field confinement.
New Yorker writer A.J. Liebling recalls his Parisian apprenticeship in the fine art of eating in this charming memoir.
First published in 1992. Routledge is an imprint of Taylor &
Francis, an informa company.
The number of prisoners in the US, UK, and elsewhere continues to
rise, accompanied by growing claims of the reformative effects of
imprisonment. At the same time, the post-second world war consensus
regarding the damaging effects of institutions has largely faded
from memory. This book now in paperback revisits the important
question of whether the prison harms its inhabitants, its
employees, prisoners' families, and others, and the book redirects
the conversation among academics, policy-makers, and professionals
on the effects of imprisonment. It brings together a group of
leading scholars to examine the social, psychological, behavioral,
and emotional impacts of the incarceration experience on prisoners
and their families during and after their captivity and on society.
The Effects of Imprisonment is an authoritative overview and will
be essential reading for anyone with an interest in this field.
Das Buch führt die wichtigsten Strömungen der
Korruptionsforschung seit 1945 auf. Ein besonderes Augenmerk wird
dabei auf die deutsche Forschungslandschaft gelegt. Weitere
Untersuchungen dargelegt.
This book makes public, for the first time, a full account of the
development of the privatization of prisons, centred on the only
full-scale empirical study yet to have been undertaken in Britain.
After providing an up-to-date overview of the development of
private sector involvement in penal practice in the United Kingdom,
North America, Europe and Australia, the authors go on to describe
the first two years in the life of Wolds Remand Prison - the first
private prison in Britain. They look at the daily life for remand
prisoners, assess the duties and morale of staff and compare the
workings of Wolds to a new local prison in the public sector. The
authors conclude by discussing some of the practical and
theoretical issues to have emerged from contracting out, ethical
issues surrounding the whole privatization debate and implications
for the future of the prison system and penal policy.
The suicide rate for prisoners is often four times that of the
general population. While previous studies have tended to rely on
official statistics and prison records, "Suicides in Prison" draws
directly on the experiences of both prisoners and staff. The
interviews conducted by Alison Liebling help elucidate the
circumstances which lead to suicide and attempted suicide. She
provides further evidence to support the growing notion that
suicide is not an exclusively psychiatric problem, but one in which
a person's social support and coping mechanisms plays a crucial
role.
"Suicides in Prison" shows how serious difficulties in the
management of prisoners at risk of suicide may be exacerbated by
problems of communication between departments, and that prison
officers may lack the necessary training to play a major role in
suicide prevention. Furthermore, Liebling insists that if staff
perceptions and attitudes are not addressed, any attempt to improve
procedures may well by ineffective.
"Suicides in Prison" is of interest to probation officers, social
workers and prison wardens, as well as those studying penology
courses. It traces the recent history of the problem, providing the
first major theoretical discussion of the nature and causes of
suicide in prison.
This book is a thoroughly updated version of the popular first
edition of The Prison Officer. It incorporates the significant
increase in knowledge about the work of prison officer since the
first edition was published and provides a live account of prison
work and ways of understanding the role of the prison officer in
the late-modern context.
Few detailed narratives exist of prison work and the sort of
role the prison officer occupies; this book addresses the gap.
Using a range of quantitative and qualitative data and drawing on
available theoretical literature it explores the role of the prison
officer in an appreciative way, taking into account the
little-discussed issues of power and discretion.
It provides a single accessible guide to the world and work of
the prison officer, looking in detail at the present role of the
prison officer in Britain and demonstrating the centrality of
staff-prisoner relationships to every operation carried out by
officers.
This book will be of relevance to anyone with an interest in the
work of a prison officer; students and others looking for an
introductory survey of the literature and essential reading for any
established and aspiring officers.
What type of sustainable concepts will meet future mobility
requirements? Digitization is leading to the growth of the "sharing
society". Especially in megacities, automation and the challenges
to last mile logistics are likely to increase significantly. The
question is: How can we use active development methods to design
clean, efficient and intelligent mobility solutions? The
international congress "Vehicles of Tomorrow" is an information and
communication platform that showcases all aspects of the mobility
transformation.
Die inhaltlichen Schwerpunkte des Tagungsbands zur

In 1958, Ralph E. Gomory transformed the field of integer
programming when he published a paper that described a
cutting-plane algorithm for pure integer programs and announced
that the method could be refined to give a finite algorithm for
integer programming. In 2008, to commemorate the anniversary of
this seminal paper, a special workshop celebrating fifty years of
integer programming was held in Aussois, France, as part of the
12th Combinatorial Optimization Workshop. It contains reprints of
key historical articles and written versions of survey lectures on
six of the hottest topics in the field by distinguished members of
the integer programming community. Useful for anyone in
mathematics, computer science and operations research, this book
exposes mathematical optimization, specifically integer programming
and combinatorial optimization, to a broad audience.
Based on an interdisciplinary conference held at the University of
Cambridge in May 2012, Legitimacy and Criminal Justice: An
International Exploration brings together internationally renowned
scholars from a range of disciplines including criminology,
international relations, sociology and political science to examine
the meaning of legitimacy and advance its theoretical understanding
within the context of criminal justice. In policy terms, the
conference afforded a timely opportunity for criminal justice
senior managers and researchers to discuss the practical
applications and implications of legitimacy for policing and
prisons. This resulting volume aims to: advance conceptual
understanding of legitimacy in the contexts of policing and
criminal justice; to develop a better understanding of the
implications of analyses of legitimacy for the practical contexts
of policing, prisons and criminal justice; and to recognise the
growing number of contexts in which criminal justice personnel
encounter ethnically and religiously diverse communities, such as
the acute dilemmas for legitimate authority posed by perceived
terrorist threats. Attention is also devoted to the growing
importance of international organisations in relation to
legitimacy, both in its international and domestic manifestations.
The volume includes 16 substantial new contributions to this
important field from leading political and theoretical scholars in
the field, along with the results of several recent empirical
studies. Together they constitute an unprecedented synthesis of
disparate but leading thinkers in the growing field of legitimacy
scholarship and should be of value to social scientists across
different disciplines and to criminal justice practitioners.
