Contemplating the nature, practice and study of private law, this
comprehensive book offers a detailed overview of private law's
theoretical dimensions. It promotes a reflective attitude towards
the topic, encouraging the reader to question how private law is
practiced and studied, what this implies for their own engagement
in the field and what kind of private lawyer they want to be. Marc
Loth explores the central notion that private law is a
multi-layered system which can only be fully apprehended in
context. This thought-provoking book draws on examples from a range
of legal systems to provide philosophical perspectives on the
diverse dimensions of private law. Chapters examine the concept,
history, language, values, methods and discipline of private law,
as well as legal professionalism and the expertise of the private
lawyer. Private Law in Context will be a key resource for scholars
and postgraduate students interested in legal theory, legal
philosophy, law and society and the nature of private law as a
system and a practice.

This is the only publication that presents a modern interpretation
of the Classical Orders. The new edition of this successful title
now includes the proportions in both metric and imperial
measurements to make the orders more accessible and to provide a
valuable reference for designers. The inclusion of both 100-part
and 96-part systems of proportion is underpinned by an essay on
James Gibbs - one of the 18th century authors of standardized
proportioning systems - and his influence in America. Along with
additional plates, this book gives a clear introduction to those
not familiar with the classical genre and is an easy to follow
guide which assists architects, interior designers and conservators
with the quality of their design. 1. The only detailed contemporary
guide to the classical orders available 2. Presents the
proportioning system in both metric and imperial for ease of
understanding 3. An easily accessible introduction to the subject
The first international conference ever held in Africa on the works
of author Joseph Conrad took place in 1998, to mark the centenary
of the publication of heart of darkness. This book draws its title
from Conrad's short story, `An Outpost of Progress' which
represented the responses of a European to colonial settler
assumptions about progress and backwardness, in the light of his
first-hand experience of Europeans in Africa at the end of the
nineteenth century. The 13 essays in this collection engage
directly with the ways in which Conrad's fiction explores and
problematises the notion of `progress', not only at the time when
he was writing but now, more than a century later. Although the
relationship between modernist and postcolonial literature has been
theorised by critics in Britain, Europe and America since the late
1980s, for the first time, this book brings these debates to
Africa.
Containing essays by leading Cold War scholars, such as Wilfried
Loth, Geir Lundestad and Seppo Hentila, this volume offers a
broad-ranging examination of the history of detente in the Cold
War. The ten years from 1965 to 1975 marked a deep transformation
of the bipolar international system of the Cold War. The Vietnam
War and the Prague Spring showed the limits of the two superpowers,
who were constrained to embark on a wide-ranging detente policy,
which culminated with the SALT agreements of 1972. At the same time
this very detente opened new venues for the European countries:
French policy towards the USSR and the German Ostpolitik being the
most evident cases in point. For the first time since the 1950s,
Western Europe began to participate in the shaping of the Cold War.
The same could not be said of Eastern Europe, but ferments began to
establish themselves there which would ultimately lead to the
astounding changes of 1989-90: the Prague Spring, the uprisings in
Gdansk in 1970 and generally the rise of the dissident movement.
That last process being directly linked to the far-reaching event
which marked the end of that momentous decade: the Helsinki
conference. The Making of Detente will appeal to students of the
Cold War, international history and European contemporary history.
'If we had held one minute's silence for each of the six million
Jews who were murdered, we would have remained silent for twelve
years.' Blanche Major. In Time's Witnesses: Women's Voices from the
Holocaust, Major and nine other Jewish women testify about their
horrific experiences in Auschwitz, Theresienstadt, Bergen-Belsen
and other Nazi camps. This book tells of humiliation, hunger, death
and despair, but also of dignity, unity and hope-and an indomitable
will to live. Each woman's experience is unique; yet their
reflections share a common hope for reconciliation and
understanding. They are a testament to the Nazi atrocities and a
caution for the future. Theirs are stories the world must never
forget.
This book offers a comprehensive overview of UK defence exports, as
an example of the international trade in defence capabilities. The
work explores the subject of defence exports from the UK through
various lenses, ranging from ethics, geopolitics, and national
resilience to technology transfer, industrial partnering and
military cooperation. By unveiling a multi-perspective model of
defence exports, the book reveals the arms trade to be possessed of
many meanings and understandings. At a moment in world history when
the threat of state-on-state conflict has re-emerged, wedded to
rapid technological changes in the practice of warfare, it is time
to reassess the dynamics of the trade in arms through the
experiences of the UK – a case study of defence exports from a
mature democracy with a well-established military and defence
industrial sector. Building upon extensive applied research across
the UK defence environment, the work positions defence exports at
the centre of a cat’s cradle of multiple drivers and
understandings, from the geopolitical to the commercial.
Traditional and refreshed ethical arguments relating to the arms
trade in the 21st century are also presented and explored which,
together, reshape our knowledge and consideration of the roles of
defence exports and the challenges that reside in its practice.
With extensive access to ministers, policymakers, industrialists,
campaigners and military commanders, the author is well-placed to
deliver an appreciation of these multiple perspectives and
explanations of defence exports, which are presented in an
accessible manner for readers. This book will be of much interest
to students of defence and security studies, British politics and
International Relations, as well as policymakers.
Unfreezing Music Education argues that discussing the conflicting
meanings of music should occupy a more central role in formal music
education and music teacher preparation programs than is currently
the case. Drawing on the critical theory of the Frankfurt School,
the author seeks to take a dialectical approach to musical meaning,
rooted in critical formalism, that avoids the pitfalls of both
traditional aesthetic arguments and radical subjectivity. This book
makes the case for helping students understand that the meaning of
musical forms is socially constructed through a process of
reification, and argues that encouraging greater awareness of the
processes through which music's fluid meanings become hidden will
help students to think more critically about music. Connecting this
philosophical argument with concrete, practical challenges faced by
students and educators, this study will be of interest to
researchers across music education and philosophy, as well as
post-secondary music educators and all others interested in
aesthetic philosophy, critical theory, cultural studies, or the
sociology of music and music education.

This book analyses UK defence as a complex, interdependent
public-private enterprise covering politics, management, society,
and technology, as well as the military. Building upon wide-ranging
applied research, with extensive access to ministers, policy
makers, senior military commanders, and industrialists, the book
characterises British defence as a phenomenon that has endured
extensive transformation this century. Looking at the subject
afresh as a complex, extended enterprise involving politics,
alliances, businesses, skills, economics, military practices, and
citizens, the authors profoundly reshape our understanding of
'defence' and how it is to be commissioned and delivered in a world
dominated by geopolitical risks and uncertainties. The book makes
the case that this new understanding of defence must inevitably
lead to new policies and processes to ensure its health and
vitality. This book will be of much interest to students of defence
studies, British politics, and military and strategic studies, as
well as policy makers and practitioners.

Introducing Little Clothbound Classics: irresistible, mini editions
of short stories, novellas and essays from the world's greatest
writers, designed by the award-winning Coralie Bickford-Smith.
Celebrating the range and diversity of Penguin Classics, they take
us from snowy Japan to springtime Vienna, from haunted New England
to a sun-drenched Mediterranean island, and from a game of chess on
the ocean to a love story on the moon. Beautifully designed and
printed, these collectible editions are bound in colourful, tactile
cloth and stamped with foil. Over the course of six years, Maria
Rilke wrote a series of letters to a young officer cadet, advising
him on writing, love, suffering and the nature of advice itself;
these profound and lyrical letters have since become hugely
influential for writers and artists of all kinds. This volume also
contains the 'Letter from a Young Worker', a striking polemic
against Christianity written too in letter form.
The relationship between government and the businesses that
contribute towards the defence and security of the state is a
critical one; it often underscores a modern state's foreign policy
and sense of place in the world. Yet, despite its clear importance,
this subject is underexplored and rarely analysed in a rigorous
manner. As a consequence, government defence industrial policies,
if they exist at all, often seem somewhat contrived, ill-considered
and contradictory. The Defence Industrial Triptych systematically
analyses the components and drivers of the relationships that bind
a government to its defence industrial base by examining three
major case studies: the UK, US and Germany, who between them
account for over three quarters of NATO defence spending. The
features of their defence industrial relationships -whether common
or unique - provide vital lessons for policy-makers, industrialists
and the taxpayer. As defence cuts bite across NATO and as the UK
approaches the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review, the
relationships this Whitehall Paper considers are more important
than ever.

Another impossible case for DCI Gillard, but this time the answers
are very close to home…With a baby on the way, a pregnant wife to
take care of and a new home to settle into, DCI Craig Gillard seems
to have found a life of domestic bliss. But when retired police
sergeant Ken Stapleford is found stabbed to death in front of his
own TV while watching Saturday afternoon football, Gillard’s
peace is once again disturbed. Only a day later, just a short walk
from his new home, Gillard is himself witness to the killing of a
jogger in Nightingale Park. A strange forensic connection emerges
between the two killings, something that seems impossible. As he
digs into the evidence, Gillard uncovers two more attacks, and any
chance of taking time off for the birth of his child disappears.
And all the time the killer is circling closer and closer... The
final instalment of the DCI Gillard Crime Thrillers is a knockout,
perfect for fans of Stuart Macbride, Mark Billingham and Robert
Bryndza.
This title examines the role of the Europeans in the Cold War
during the "Khrushchev Era" (1953-65). It was a period marked by
the struggle for a regulated co-existence in a world of blocs, an
initial arrangement to find a temporary arrangement failed due to
German desires to quickly overcome the status quo. It was only when
the danger of an unintended nuclear war was demonstrated through
the crises over Berlin and Cuba that a tacit arrangement became
possible, which was based on a system dominated by a nuclear arms
race.
The book provides useful information on the role of Konrad Adenauer
and the beginnings of the German "new Eastern policy," as well as
examining the Western European power policy in the era of Harold
Macmillan and Charles de Gaulle.
Friedrich Holderlin's translations have long been seen as some of
the most fascinating ever made, so radical and unconventional that
they have altered our ideas of what translation is. Based on a
close study of the versions of Pindar and Sophocles, and placing
Holderlin's practice in its 18th-century context, this book
explores the meaning of translation for Holderlin's work as a
whole, devoting particular attention to the poetry. The author
draws links between translations, individual poems, essays and
Holderlin'a working techniques, and suggests that translation, both
as figure and practice, is at the centre of Holderlin's imaginative
world.
The Byzantine Empire - the Christianized Roman Empire - very soon
defined itself in terms of correct theological belief, 'orthodoxy'.
The terms of this belief were hammered out, for the most part, by
bishops, but doctrinal decisions were made in councils called by
the Emperors, many of whom involved themselves directly in the
definition of 'orthodoxy'. Iconoclasm was an example of such
imperial involvement, as was the final overthrow of iconoclasm.
That controversy ensured that questions of Christian art were also
seen by Byzantines as implicated in the question of orthodoxy. The
papers gathered in this volume derive from those presented at the
36th Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies, Durham, March 2002.
They discuss how orthodoxy was defined, and the different interests
that it represented; how orthodoxy was expressed in art and the
music of the liturgy; and how orthodoxy helped shape the Byzantine
Empire's sense of its own identity, an identity defined against the
'other' - Jews, heretics and, especially from the turn of the first
millennium, the Latin West. These considerations raise wider
questions about the way in which societies and groups use
world-views and issues of belief to express and articulate
identity. At a time when, with the enlargement of the European
Union, questions of identity within Europe are once again becoming
pressing, there is much in these essays of topical relevance.
