The European Conference on Composite Materials (ECCM-4) will be
held for the first time, in Germany after the successes of previous
meetings in France and England. The meeting will take place in
Stuttgart which is capital of B aden-Wtirttemberg and a centre for
new technologies in Germany. Amongst these new technologies,
composite materials play a dominant role and it is the aim of the
conference to promote scientific discussion of these materials.
Polymer matrix composites are well established and lie at the
centre of interest so that a great number of contributions forms on
plastic matrix and high temperature resin matrix composites. New
developments in the area of reinforcement fibres will be discussed
in a special section of the poster session. Metal matrix and
ceramic matrix composites as well as carbon fibre reinforced carbon
are strong candidates for future structural materials. These
classes of composites receive wide interest at the conference. The
conference organisers received more than 250 abstracts, from which
about 160 contributed papers from 20 countries were accepted. In
addition to the' 80 oral presentations five invited papers on
topics of special interest will be given. The recycling problem of
fiber reinforced composites will be discussed in a plenary paper.
In the name of all those who were involved in preparation and
organisation of this conference, we hope that fruitful discussions
but also the social gathering will contribute to further steps in
deepening the European cooperation in this fascinating composite
research field.
Dr A.R.

he trio of poets bill themselves as 'conversations between a
recovering love addict, a born again nihilist and an emotionally
naked feminist'.They're clever and inventive and they give good
show. Little Grape Jelly is a British poetry collective made up of
the three performance poets Lily Ashley, Grace Pilkington, and
James Massiah, pictured below. In this collection, poems are
emailed and texted back and forth, pursuing evolving themes of
love, desire, heartbreak, drugs, sex, and the general shittyness of
the past year... as well as the rewards and excitements of youth.
The poems are spontaneous, sometimes rough-hewn, blunt, frank, and
even startling - as well as often hilarious or moving. Witty
doodles and zany illustrations enhance the charm. A book of poetry
like no other.
The UWI Gender Journey is a bold volume that carefully documents
the visionary commitment and struggles for recognition and respect
of a relatively small cohort of dedicated feminist scholars, each
of them powerful academics and leaders, as they collaborated to
institutionalize gender and development studies at the University
of West Indies. We learn about the origins of the Institute for
Gender and Development Studies and how it came to provide global
academic leadership in the field of gender and development studies.
The story of the Institute for Gender and Development Studies and
all its preceding phases deserves to be told both because of its
significant impact on regional scholarship and also because it
exemplifies commitment to the legitimation of a fundamentally
interdisciplinary academic undertaking with great importance for
Caribbean social well-being. The UWI Gender Journey records a
uniquely regional project and its broader momentum, offering
powerful lessons for advocates for gender studies internationally.
The authors also make clear that gender and development studies is
an essential component of the global struggle against gender
inequalities. The audience for this work is both regional and
global. The detailed descriptive account of how women and gender
studies came to be in the University of the West Indies provides
much of scholarly interest for academics elsewhere. Historians will
find the volume invaluable for its wealth of details about how
various Caribbean feminist scholars and their supporters responded
to global development initiatives.

Little Burgundy was a small vibrant part of Central Montreal.
Perhaps somewhat sadly, that area no longer exists, having been
changed largely through gentrification. But the area and its
residents had many worthwhile stories to tell. However, up till
now, I am unaware of anyone undertaking to tell any of them. So in
this mini novel, I am adopting the posture of a reporter, who will
try to recall some of the most noteworthy stories about this place.
Hopefully, the few stories that I have selected will give the
reader a sense of what day-to-day life was like for those of us who
lived there at that time.
My story begins in Montreal on August 6, 1931, the day before my
father died. I was not quite five years old, and I was the fourth
of six siblings that my mother was left to raise-at the height of
the so-called Great Depression. I trace and comment on my life
struggles through public school, high school, and thence to my
first university degree. Throughout, I faced the dual problem of
going to school without having the mandatory fees. But I point out
that I completed my education debt-free, never having applied for
or received a student loan. I also reveal how I coped with the
double-edged difficulty of being both black and ambitious, while
persevering in a mostly unwelcoming white-dominated environment.
Then I tell how I managed to overcome numerous obstacles, to obtain
a doctorate (in organic chemistry), and eventually go on to become
a pioneering Canadian-born black scientist and educator-more than
forty years ago. Parenthetically, the pivotal breakthrough in my
professional career took place at about the same time (1947) in the
same city (Montreal), that Jackie Robinson was making his
breakthrough into organized baseball. So in every sense, this is
the story of a "native son." Thomas "Tom" F. Massiah
