Through research, physical oceanography aims to solve the
numerous problems stated by thermal, optical and dynamical
properties of the oceans. "Instrumentation and Metrology in
Physical Oceanography" describes the means used in oceanography to
determine physical properties of the oceans by medium of "in situ"
measurements. This book explores the theoretical functioning of
sensors and instruments, as well as different practical aspects of
using these tools. The content of this book appeals directly to
technicians or engineers wishing to enhance their knowledge of
instrumentation and application to environment surveillance.
"Instrumentation and Metrology in Physical Oceanography" details
the functioning of sensors and instruments used to assess the
following parameters in oceanography: temperature, conductivity,
pressure, sound velocity, current in magnitude and direction, time
and position with GPS, height of water and tide, waves, optical and
chemical properties (turbidity), dissolved gas (O2, CO2), pH,
nutrients and other dissolved elements. Furthermore, this book also
elaborates on the different means used to obtain measurements at
sea (boats, drifting floats, moorings, undersea platforms,
gliders...) and techniques currently being developed.
BLOOD AND STEEL. PREFACE: ZAHAROFF, the Man of Mystery, aroused the
curi osity of a dozen of post-War sensation-seeking pub licists.
But the House of Krupp, which could boast the friendship of two
German Emperors, its guns making the background for a half -
century of mad armament policy, and again doing so by the will of
Krupp's new patron, Adolf Hitler, has never yet, throughout the
many generations of its existence, been the subject of a genuinely
critical history. The fact, though surprising, is by no means
accidental. For this firm, surpassing in adroitness of intelligence
all its competitors in the armament industry, has success fully
camouflaged its activities in a rather novel manner. Several
hundred books and pamphlets and more than a thousand scientific
papers seem to imply a veritable publicity-mania, which, however,
is a stroke of true genius: i. e., concealment of the truth behind
a mass of cleverly dished-up data. The author confesses that herein
lay the real difficulty of his task. Here was no charitable
obscurity in which every ascertained fact could prove a welcome
guide to the Unknown. Step by step mountains of paper had to be
pushed aside in order that what was essential could be found in
spite of thousands of printed pages. And utmost care was taken to
investigate and weigh the sources of all information. Definite,
undisputed state ments alone could be utilised here. The author,
lacking all talent for fiction, did not allow his imagination play
in any single instance. He himself retreated behind the facts
presented. It is obvious that the association of politics and busi
ness, steel and the destiny of nations, revealed in these pages is
not to be considered peculiarto the history or the present
condition of Germany. Wherever the name Krupp appears, let the
Frenchman substitute Schnei der; the Englishman, Vickers; and any
other coun try, its corresponding firm. Not out of blind antagonism
nor hatred has this criti cism of one phase of German actuality
been born. Rather out of sadness; sadness for a kindly but
misguided peo ple; for a noble country; and especially for one
strip of earth beside the Ruhr which will always remain the
Promised Land to the writer. Contents include: PREFACE v PART I THE

Collaborative decision making processes are a form of
communication inside organizations. Their functioning can teach
lessons for the design of electronic office systems. Those
processes are open ended and therefore decide themselves on their
form. Like oral deliberations which cannot be modelled in advance
any open ended communication process needs means for common control
over the further advancement and the ending of the process.
The history of German administrative practice and its special
methods of using disposals for the control of common processes
shows the creation of records as based on communication needs
generated by the intention of joint actions. For electronic
decision making processes the purposes remain the same, but the
means have to follow the effects of electronic communication on
messages.

de Saint-Exupery T e global climate is changing. During the last
100 years warming has been observed in all continents with an
average increase of 0. 6 +- 0. 2 C (man +- SD) in the course of the
20th century. T e greatest temperature changes occurred at middle
and high latitudes in the northern hemispheres. T e trend towards
warmer average surface temperatures for the period since 1976 is
roughly three times that of the past 100 years as a whole. In the
last decades warming seems to be attributable to human activities
(man-made environmental changes) like land-use changes,
deforestation, urbanisation and the reduction of wetlands. Global
climate change is likely to be accompanied by an increase in
frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.
Anton Wilhelm Amo (c.1703-after 1752) was the first African
philosopher in the modern period to write in the European
philosophical tradition and study and teach in European
universities. At the dawn of the eighteenth century, while still a
small boy, he was sent from his home in present-day Ghana to
Amsterdam. From there he was sent to Germany as a court attendant
of Duke Anton Ulrich of Braunschweig-Wolfenbuttel, and was
subsequently baptized in 1708. He matriculated at the University of
Halle in 1727, where he defended a law thesis. He then studied and
taught at the University of Wittenberg, before returning to Halle
to teach, and later also teaching in Jena. He returned to West
Africa permanently in 1747. Though much attention on and study of
Amo has previously focused on his symbolic importance as a
historical figure-the first African philosopher in modern
Europe-Stephen Menn and Justin E. H. Smith argue for a serious
engagement with Amo's work as a philosopher. In an extensive
introduction, they contextualize his biography and writing within
the surrounding intellectual and historical environment, and
discuss and analyze his arguments in conversation with other
philosophers of the time. This volume contains his two Wittenberg
philosophical dissertations, On the Impassivity of the Human Mind
and the Philosophical Disputation containing a Distinct Idea of
those Things that Pertain either to the Mind or to our Living and
Organic Body, both first published in 1734. The editors present the
original Latin texts with side-by-side English translations and
detailed explanatory annotations. In centering Amo's philosophical
thought and making it accessible to more students and scholars,
Menn and Smith establish the originality and significance of Amo's
rigorous contributions to the mind-body debate of the seventeenth
and eighteenth centuries.
It was our intention and goal to bring together m Biopestzcides Use

the evolving field of biopesticides In the context of crop
protectton, btopesttcides are a key component of integrated pest
management (IPM) programs, m which biopesticides are delivered to
crops m inundative quantities, vs the mocu- tive approach, which is
charactertstic of classical biological control. Although there are
several definitions of biopesttcides m the literature, we chose to
define them as either microbials themselves or products derived
from microbials, plants, and other biological entities. In the
developed, industrial countries, primarily in Western Europe and
the United States, biopesticides are receiving more practical
attention, smce they are viewed as a means to reduce the load of
synthetic chemical pes- tides m an effort to provide for safer
foods and a cleaner envtronment. In the developing countries,
biopestictdes are viewed as having the potential to - ploit nattve
resources to produce crop protection agents that would replace
imported chemical pesticides and conserve much-needed hard
currencies These trends are well represented by the dynamic growth
of engineered crops expressing the delta-endotoxm insecticidal

This Volume presents a first introduction to a thought-provoking
Model of Motivation developed by Menno Mennes over a period of
almost thirty years. The Model of Motivation in its approach
presents a radical departure from everything that has appeared so
far in literature on the subject. And yet, it provides a
surprisingly detailed account of how motivation works, which
appears to be supported by findings from theories and research from
current literature. In an unparalleled analysis, the Model
seamlessly integrates these major theories into a consistent
comprehensive approach to motivation, explaining not only the
essentials of each theory, but also providing explanations for
controversies that have hitherto remained largely unresolved.
Motivation appears to be an 'inner dialogue', a stepwise, partly
cyclical Process in which we deal with our surroundings that often
interfere in our ambitions, our wishes and desires. Deep personal
insights into those ‘Mechanisms of the Mind’ reveal
implications that may lead to a fundamental, new understanding of
the origins of many disturbing issues we witness in present-day
society, including neglect and denial, intolerance, discord and
polarization.
Faith to Foster is a candid look into the life of ordinary foster
parents TJ and Jenn Menn. It is a journey chronicling their
decision making process, how the children arrived, the birth
parents struggle to rehabilitate, help from friends and family,
emotional goodbyes, and how faith in Jesus empowered them through
it all. This is a story they wished they'd read before starting
their foster parenting adventure. TJ and Jenn share their
experiences and feelings in a way that encourages any reader to
serve their neighbors, not just foster parents. Faith to Foster
reminds Christians how God can use them to make a difference in
their community.
The contention of Film and the American Presidency is that over the
twentieth century the cinema has been a silent partner in setting
the parameters of what we might call the presidential imaginary.
This volume surveys the partnership in its longevity, placing
stress on especially iconic presidents such as Lincoln and FDR. The
contributions to this collection probe the rich interactions
between these high institutions of culture and politics-Hollywood
and the presidency-and argue that not only did Hollywood acting
become an idiom for presidential style, but that Hollywood early on
understood its own identity through the presidency's peculiar mix
of national epic and unified protagonist. Additionally, they
contend that studios often made their films to sway political
outcomes; that the performance of presidential personae has been
constrained by the kinds of bodies (for so long, white and male)
that have occupied the office, such that presidential embodiment
obscures the body politic; and that Hollywood and the presidency
may finally be nothing more than two privileged figures of
media-age power.

This collection of papers examines issues related to the
identification, preservation, and long-term use of electronic
records. The articles discuss the functional changes in public
administration work; the evolving nature of documentation itself;
the limitations and future of traditional instruments and
principles; and the technological, conceptual, and economic
implications of capturing and retaining data electronically.
With this translation, all 12 volumes of translation of
Simplicius’ commentary on Aristotle’s Physics have been
published (full list below). In Physics 1.1–2, Aristotle raises
the question of the number and character of the first principles of
nature and feels the need to oppose the challenge of the
paradoxical Eleatic philosophers who had denied that there could be
more than one unchanging thing. This volume, part of the
groundbreaking Ancient Commentators on Aristotle series, translates
into English for the first time Simplicius' commentary on this
selected text, and includes a brief introduction, extensive
explanatory notes, indexes and a bibliography. Previous published
volumes translating Simplicius' commentary on Aristotle's Physics

In this volume, which simultaneously honors the career
contributions of Jean Berko Gleason and provides an overview of a
broad and increasingly important research area, a panel of highly
productive language researchers share and evaluate methods of
eliciting and analyzing language production across the life span
and in varying populations. Chapters address a wide variety of
historical and evolving approaches to data collection for the study
of morphosyntax, the lexicon, and pragmatics, both laboratory-based
and naturalistic. Special concerns that arise in the study of
atypical child development, aging, and second language acquisition
are a focus of the discussion.
This book, commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO) and
written by international experts, provides consensus views on the
most important issues related to allergic hypersensitivities. The
text details predictive testing, diagnosis, epidemiological
monitoring of intervention measures, sources of sensitizing agents,
and mechanisms of action.
Contributors extensively cover allergic hypersensitivity reactions
of the skin and the respiratory system. They present the current
knowledge on hypersensitivity reactions of the gastrointestinal
tract and kidneys. Major gaps in existing information about
allergic hypersensitivities are highlighted and recommendations for
future research are given. Practical methods are provided for
establishing preventive programs.
Allergic Hypersensitivities Induced by Chemicals offers valuable
information to both scientists and public health officials. This is
a useful reference for health professionals in their work with
allergies, allergens, and allergy sufferers.
This book looks at how patterns of world trade are changing, how
EEC protectionism affects developing countries, how special deals
and exceptions are bought in some cases and looks to the future to
see how the situation may develop.
Supporting the twelve volumes of translation of Simplicius' great
commentary on Aristotle's Physics, all published by Bloomsbury in
the Ancient Commentators on Aristotle series, between 1992 and
2021, this volume presents a general introduction to the
commentary. It covers the philosophical aims of Simplicius'
commentaries on the Physics and the related text On the Heaven;
Simplicius' methods and his use of earlier sources; and key themes
and comparison with Philoponus' commentary on the same text.
Simplicius treats the Physics as a universal study of the
principles of all natural things underlying the account of the
cosmos in On the Heaven. In both treatises, he responds at every
stage to the now lost Peripatetic commentaries of Alexander of
Aphrodisias, which set Aristotle in opposition to Plato and to
earlier thinkers such as Parmenides, Empedocles and Anaxagoras. On
each passage, Simplicius after going through Alexander's commentary
raises difficulties for the text of Aristotle as interpreted by
Alexander. Then, after making observations about details of the
text, and often going back to a direct reading of the older
philosophers (for whom he is now often our main source, as he is
for Alexander's commentary), he proposes his own solution to the
difficulties, introduced with a modest 'perhaps', which reads
Aristotle as in harmony with Plato and earlier thinkers.
The Cult of the Dead Cow is the story of the oldest, most respected
and most famous hacking group of all time. Its members invented the
the concept of hacktivism, released both the top tool for cracking
passwords and the reigning technique for controlling computers from
afar, and spurred development of Snowden's anonymity tool of
choice. With its origins in the earliest days of the Internet, the
cDc is full of oddball characters--spies, activists, musicians, and
politicians--who are now woven into the top ranks of the American
establishment. Today, this small group and their followers
represent the best hope for making technology a force for good
instead of for surveillance and oppression. Like a modern (and
real) illuminati, cDc members have had the ears of presidents,
secretaries of defense, and the CEO of Google. The Cult of the Dead
Cow shows how we got into the mess we find ourselves in today,
where governments and corporations hold immense power over
individuals, and and how we are finally fighting back.
