Geza Vermes is a household name within the study of the historical
Jesus, and his work is associated with a significant change within
mainstream Jesus research, typically labelled 'the third quest'.
Since the publication of Jesus the Jew in 1973, many notable Jesus
scholars have interacted with Vermes's ideas and suggestions, yet
their assessments have so far remained brief and ambiguous. Hilde
Brekke Moller explores the true impact of Vermes's Jesus research
on the perceived change within Jesus research in the 1980s, and
also within third quest Jesus research, by examining Vermes's work
and the reception of his work by numerous Jesus scholars. Moller
looks in particular depth at the Jewishness of Jesus, the
Son-of-Man problem, and Vermes's suggestion that Jesus was a Hasid,
all being aspects of Vermes's work which have attracted the most
scholarly attention. Moller's research-historical approach focuses
not only on the leading scholars of the field such as E.P. Sanders,
J.D. Crossan, J.P. Meier and C.A. Evans, but also sheds light on
underplayed aspects of previous research, and responds to the state
of affairs for recent research by challenging the rhetoric of
current historical Jesus scholarship.

their aspirations for the future. This book provides relevant

Which is the smallest book in the Bodleian Library? Who complained
when their secret pen name was revealed in the library's catalogue?
How many miles of shelving are there in the Book Storage Facility?
What is the story behind the library's refusal to lend a book to
King Charles I? And, what is fasciculing? The answers to these
questions and many more can be found inside this intriguing
miscellaneous collection of curious facts and stories about the
Bodleian Library in Oxford. Home to more than 12 million books and
a vast array of treasures including the Gutenberg bible, J.R.R.
Tolkien's hand-painted watercolours for 'The Hobbit', Shakespeare's
First Folio and four thirteenth-century copies of Magna Carta, the
Bodleian Library is one of the most magnificent libraries in the
world with a fascinating history. 'Bodleianalia' delights in
uncovering some of the lesser known facts about Britain's oldest
university library. Through a combination of lists, statistics, and
bitesize nuggets of information, it reveals many of the quirks of
fate, eccentric characters, and remarkable events which have
contributed to the making of this renowned institution. The perfect
book for trivia-lovers and bibliophiles, it also offers readers a
behind-the-scenes peek into the complex workings of a modern,
world-class library in the twenty-first century.
A clear guide to current EU institutions, practices, and policies,
this is also an informed insider's account of how they have emerged
in their present form, with clues on future change. The mixture of
analysis and history, description and prescription, works well,
because the author has had a ringside seat, but retains a cool
Nordic non-partisan detachment. The hints he offers to those, for
example in Asia, considering following a similar path to regional
integration, represent the distilled wisdom of a career in
balancing economic benefits and national sensitivities. As his
story shows, it can be done. - Lord Kerr, Former Head of the UK
Diplomatic Service, now Chairman of Imperial College, London and
Deputy Chairman of Royal Dutch Shell.
Published to mark the 200th anniversary of Dickens's birth, this
book celebrates the greatest of English novelists by illustrating
some of his abiding preoccupations. Prompted by quotations from the
novels and other writings, each themed chapter explores
contemporary images relating to salient topics of the Victorian age
such as the public entertainments of London and the domestic
pastimes of its inhabitants; the coming of the railways (which were
to transform Victorian England in fiction and in fact); school life
for children, and conditions in the workhouses and prisons which
loom so large in many of the novels and which blighted Dickens's
own childhood. Dickens was an incorrigible showman, and this book
also explores his role as actor-manager of theatrical productions,
as originator of the myriad stage adaptations of his books, and as
supreme interpreter of them himself in the public readings which
came to dominate his later years. Reproducing key extracts from the
novels alongside a selection of the original covers as they
appeared weekly and monthly in the bookshops, their crucial
illustrations and all the paraphernalia of nineteenth-century
advertising, is a unique approach which breathes life into the
vibrant world of Dickens and his characters.
A Danish musician here presents the most accurate, comprehensive
work on a major figure in American jazz: Lester Willis Young
(1909-1959), better known as Pres' or Prez, ' from the nickname
President' given to him by Billie Holiday. Based on interviews with
Young's colleagues and friends, and often presenting his own vulgar
scatological words, the book faithfully chronicles the ups and
downs of his life and career. Despite his alcoholism, drug
addiction, syphillis, epilepsy, and emotional disturbances, Young
became the outstanding tenor saxophonist of his time and a
dominant, profound influence on the development of bop and
progressive (cool') jazz in the 1940s. His solos with the bands of
Fletcher Henderson and Count Basie and his collaboration with
Holiday are recalled in this outstanding biography. "Publishers

Kirkus this is the first thoroughgoing biography of one of
America's greatest musicians; its fascination for at least jazz
aficionados is magnetic....Along with Porter's magisterial work of
musical analysis, Lester Young, this is the book to have on the
most influential jazzman between Armstrong and Parker.
"Booklist"
A fascinating and invaluable compilation of raw material...a
straightforward, accurate narrative.
"The New York TimeS"
By far the most comprehensive work available on the
extraordinary Lester Young, "You Just Fight For Your Life" is the
jazz enthusiast's dream come true. Meticulously researched and
teeming with previously unpublished information, this book
accurately recreates the life and character of one of the world's
greatest jazz musicians. Historian Frank Buchmann-Moller crafts a
full length biography exclusively for Lester Young fans focusing on
Young's philosophy of life, his exceptional ability as a
bandleader, and his sharp wit. Through the examination of army
psychiatric reports, interviews with fellow musicians, and concert
reviews, "You Just Fight For Your Life" tells the story of this
gifted yet troubled musician.
Beginning with his childhood, the book accurately chronicles the
many bands in which Lester Young played prior to joining Count
Basie in 1936. Through countless interviews with Young's peers, the
book recounts the Basie years and the spicy stories of life on the
road. The author includes new information about Young's own first
band and follows this with details of his military experience. The
final chapters deal with his years as featured soloist. Two
appendices list all of Young's jobs from 1919-59 and his own bands
chronologically as well as all musicians with whom he played. Now
Lester Young followers have a full length biography valuable not
only as a reference but for its recreation of a fascinating
life.
This book presents a thorough study and an up to date anthology of
Plato's Protagoras. International authors' papers contribute to the
task of understanding how Plato introduced and negotiated a new
type of intellectual practice - called philosophy - and the
strategies that this involved. They explore Plato's dialogue,
looking at questions of how philosophy and sophistry relate, both
on a methodological and on a thematic level. While many of the
contributing authors argue for a sharp distinction between
sophistry and philosophy, this is contested by others. Readers may
consider the distinctions between philosophy and traditional forms
of poetry and sophistry through these papers. Questions for
readers' attention include: To what extent is Socrates' preferred
mode of discourse, and his short questions and answers, superior to
Protagoras' method of sophistic teaching? And why does Plato make
Socrates and Protagoras reverse positions as it comes to virtue and
its teachability? This book will appeal to graduates and
researchers with an interest in the origins of philosophy,
classical philosophy and historical philosophy.
This book discusses the ontological foundation for organizational
analysis and organizational life from a phenomenological
perspective. The objective of this book is to provide the reader
with an understanding of organizations that adequately takes into
account the current philosophical knowledge regarding human nature.
A key result of this analysis is that organizations are
existentially founded human experiences of emotions, ethics,
culture and narrative. This understanding of organizations is
furthermore complicated by the existence of concepts of power,
relationship, interaction and identity, which all can be perceived
as contradicting notions of objectivity, professionalism and
rationalism. The question is not whether this is an easy
description to navigate nor apply, but rather where we go from
here. This book would be of interest to students and scholars
working on the philosophy of business, and academics in critical
organization studies and alternative philosophy of organization.
The book would also be of interest to people in all organization
trying to understand everyday of dilemmas and contradictions.
