In this edition of Occupational Health and Safety Management, the
authors aim at validating the concept of safety ownership and the
application of safety excellence. The book highlights the roles and
functions of a safety practitioner and focuses on the legal
requirements and applications of providing a healthy and safe
workplace. The authors discuss hazard identification, at-risk
behaviour, and behaviour-based safety and risk assessment, through
a health and safety management approach.
Land Law and Governance: African Perspectives on Land Tenure and
Title explores different ways of conceptualising secure land
holding in Africa. The book brings together voices from different
contexts, offering contrasting perspectives and methodological
approaches. Land Law and Governance: African Perspectives on Land
Tenure and Title also juxtaposes a range of political and academic
viewpoints through theoretical discussions and case studies. The
book thus opens up the discourse on forms of security of tenure in
Africa, in a global context.
Part of a series that offers mainly linguistic and anthropological
research and teaching/learning material on a region of great
cultural and strategic interest and importance in the post-Soviet
era.

Inhabitants of poor, rural areas in the Global South heavily depend
on natural resources in their immediate vicinity. Conflicts over
and exploitation of these resources - whether it is water, fish,
wood fuel, minerals, or land - severely affect their livelihoods.
The contributors to this volume leave behind the polarised debate,
previously surrounding the relationship between natural resources
and conflict, preferring a more nuanced approach that allows for
multiple causes at various levels. The contributions cover a wide
array of resources, geographical contexts (Africa, Asia and Latin
America), and conflict dynamics. Most are of a comparative nature,
exploring experiences of conflict as well as cooperation in
multiple regions. This volume finds its origin in an innovative
research programme with the acronym CoCooN, steered by The
Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO/WOTRO) and
involving universities and civil society partners in many
countries. It presents the conceptual approaches adhered to by each
of seven interdisciplinary projects, ranging from green criminology
and political ecology to institutional analysis, legal pluralism
and identity politics. The volume will be of interest to academics
and practitioners concerned with an understanding of conflict as
well as cooperation over natural resources.
The low-carbon transition is ongoing everywhere. This Handbook,
written by a group of senior and junior scholars from six
continents and nineteen countries, explores the legal pathways of
decarbonisation in the energy sector. What emerges is a composite
picture. There are many roadblocks, but also a lot of legal
innovation. The volume distils the legal knowledge which should
help move forward the transition. Questions addressed include the
differences between the decarbonization strategies of developed and
developing countries, the pace of the transition, the management of
multi-level governance systems, the pros and cons of different
policy instruments, the planning of low-carbon infrastructures, the
roles and meanings of energy justice. The Handbook can be drawn
upon by legal scholars to compare decarbonisation pathways in
several jurisdictions. Non-legal scholars can find information to
be included in transition theories and decarbonization scenarios.
Policymakers can discover contextual factors that should be taken
into account when deciding how to support the transition.

The degree to which the traditional concept of property can be
adjusted in order to accommodate basic constitutional concepts such
as freedom and social duty, is analysed by the author. The focus is
placed on recent reforms in the land law of Germany and South
Africa. Remarkable similarities in the history, structure and
interpretation of German and South African property law and
constitutional law are indicated and a link between private law,
constitutional law, land reform and legal comparison is
established. This is of particular significance for the
implementation of the constitutional objectives of land reform by
the South African judiciary and legislature. It furthermore
provides an overview of the intricate system of constitutional
property protection that has been developed in German law.
Bringing together a wide variety of examples of functional amyloid
in a single volume, this book explores the importance of amyloid
fibrils in fungi, bacteria, algae, invertebrate, and vertebrate
animals for providing environmental protection, structural
integrity, and regulating biochemical processes. It highlights many
of the extraordinary examples of functional amyloid found to date.
It, therefore, provides an exciting perspective for the study of
amyloid deposits as important and useful protein structures
widespread in nature.
These Proceedings contain articles based on the lectures and in
formal discussions at the Conference on Transformation Groups held
at Tulane University, May 8 to June 2, 1967 under the sponsorship
of the Advanced Science Seminar Projects of the National Science
Foun dation (Contract No. GZ 400). They differ, however, from many
such Conference proceedings in that particular emphasis has been
given to the review and exposition of the state of the theory in
its various mani festations, and the suggestion of direction to
further research, rather than purely on the publication of research
papers. That is not to say that there is no new material contained
herein. On the contrary, there is an abundance of new material,
many new ideas, new questions, and new conjectures arefully
incorporated within the framework of the theory as the various
authors see it. An original objective of the Conference and of this
report was to supply a much needed review of and supplement to the
theory since the publication of the three standard works,
MONTGOMERY and ZIPPIN, Topological Transformation Groups,
Interscience Pub lishers, 1955, BOREL et aI., Seminar on
Transformation Groups, Annals of Math. Surveys, 1960, and CONNER
and FLOYD, Differen tial Periodic Maps, Springer-Verlag, 1964.
Considering this objective ambitious enough, it was decided to
limit the survey to that part of Transformation Group Theory
derived from the Montgomery School."
Of all topological algebraic structures compact topological groups
have perhaps the richest theory since 80 many different fields
contribute to their study: Analysis enters through the
representation theory and harmonic analysis; differential geo
metry, the theory of real analytic functions and the theory of
differential equations come into the play via Lie group theory;
point set topology is used in describing the local geometric
structure of compact groups via limit spaces; global topology and
the theory of manifolds again playa role through Lie group theory;
and, of course, algebra enters through the cohomology and homology
theory. A particularly well understood subclass of compact groups
is the class of com pact abelian groups. An added element of
elegance is the duality theory, which states that the category of
compact abelian groups is completely equivalent to the category of
(discrete) abelian groups with all arrows reversed. This allows for
a virtually complete algebraisation of any question concerning
compact abelian groups. The subclass of compact abelian groups is
not so special within the category of compact. groups as it may
seem at first glance. As is very well known, the local geometric
structure of a compact group may be extremely complicated, but all
local complication happens to be "abelian." Indeed, via the duality
theory, the complication in compact connected groups is faithfully
reflected in the theory of torsion free discrete abelian groups
whose notorious complexity has resisted all efforts of complete
classification in ranks greater than two."

Compared with most of Continental Europe North of the Alps, the
introduction of writing in East Central Europe (Bohemia, Poland and
Hungary) took place with a considerable delay. Much is known about
East Central European uses of writing, although only a fragment of
this knowledge is known outside the region. Gathered by historians,
palaeographers and codicologists, diplomatists, art historians,
literary historians and others, this knowledge has hardly ever been
studied in the light of recent discussions on medieval literacy and
communication. Work done in the Czech, Polish and Hungarian
traditions of scholarship has never been subjected to a comparative
analysis. Furthermore, the question of the relation between writing
and other forms of communication in the region remains largely
unexplored. The volume serves a double purpose. For the first time,
a collection of contributions on medieval literacy in East Central
Europe is put before the forum of international scholarship. It is
also hoped to further discussions of modes of communication,
literate behaviour and mentalities among scholars working in the
region.
The number of severe and sometimes catastrophic disruptive events
has been rapidly increasing. Extreme weather events including
floods, wildfires, hurricanes, and other natural disasters have
become both more frequent and more severe, whilst events such as
the COVID-19 pandemic represent a global threat to public health
with huge economic effects that recovery packages tried to address.
These disruptive events, alone and in combination, have dramatic
consequences on nature, human life, and the economy, calling for
urgent action to mitigate their causes and adapt to their impacts.
In response to discourses of collapsology and end-of-growth
theories, this monograph offers an analytical approach to
developing legal responses that can help ensure the needs of
present and future generations can be met through energy systems,
infrastructure development, and natural resources management in
these times of disruption. 'Resilience' is, therefore, seen as a
common framework for the interpretation and development of energy,
infrastructure, and natural resources law. With a mix of thematic
chapters and case studies from multiple jurisdictions, Resilience
in Energy, Infrastructure, and Natural Resources Law maps and
assesses legal responses to disruptive nature-based events, and
examines possible legal pathways for more sustainable outcomes,
based on its engagement with this concept of 'resilience' and
social-ecological thinking.
