experiences of a judge, a prosecutor, a defense attorney, and more.
This fascinating and well-researched text gives you a realistic
sense of being in the courthouse, enabling you to quickly grasp
what it's like to work in and be a part of the American criminal
justice system. The book's approach, which focuses on the
courthouse "players," makes it easy to understand each person's
important role in bringing a case through the court process.
Throughout, the authors highlight not only the pivotal role of the
criminal courts but also the court's importance and impact on
society as a whole.
The nature of higher education is by no means fixed: it has
evolved over time; different models of higher education co-exist
alongside each other at present; and, worldwide, there are demands
for higher education to change to better help support economic
growth and to better fit chagning social and economic
circumstances. This book examines, from an Asian perspective, the
debates about how higher education should change. It considers
questions of funding, and of who will attend universities, and the
fundamental question of what universities are for, especially as
the three key funcations of universities - knowledge creation
through research, knowledge dissemination through teaching and
service, and knowledge conservation through libraries, the
disciplinary structuring of knowledge and in other ways - are
increasingly being carried out much more widely outside
universities in the new "knowledge society." Throughout, the book
discusses the extent to which the countries of East Asia are
developing new models of higher education, thereby better preparing
themselves for the "new "knowledge society," rather than simply
following old Western models.
This edited volume examines the most pressing social and political
issues confronting Israel from a multidisciplinary perspective,
focusing on the breakdown of social solidarity and the inability to
formulate consensus. The contributors – encompassing political
scientists, historians, communication researchers, sociologists,
economists, and educators – focus on specific topics that serve
as exemplary cases of various trends of consensus and polarization.
These trends are examined in the context of ideological, religious,
economic, national, and ethnic cleavages. In addition, this volume
analyzes how political actors’ preference for “non-decisionâ€
on various issues has resulted in the maintenance of a status quo,
with cleavages or conflicts being neither mitigated nor polarized.
Together, this collection of articles paints a picture of Israel as
a state racked by increasing polarization along ideological and
religious lines. It is argued that this difficulty in determining a
consensual definition of the state threatens to destroy social
solidarity in Israel altogether, a climate in which “the center
cannot hold.†This book is essential reading for anyone seeking
to understand the major internal threats to Israel’s
self-definition as a Jewish-democratic state and will also appeal
to sociologists and political scientists interested in global
polarization trends.
This volume examines the sustainability of higher education
massification throughout the Asia Pacific region. The massification
of higher education has swept across the region over the past three
decades in complex and astounding ways in some cases. The book
inquires after the many faces that higher education massification
is taking in varied country settings and seeks to identify the more
important implications that follow. It discusses massification and
its sustainability within the region's complex contexts and
addresses the issues of implications, challenges, and limitations.
Paying particular attention to implications on resources,
employment and social mobility, institutional identity, programs,
funding and teacher education, the book explores the capacity of
countries to stay on the course they have chosen and the
implications this may have for the continued identification of
resources to do so, the choice to focus more particularly and
importantly on the considerable range of innovations and variations
and the ability to recognize and develop them in meaningful ways.

Working within the framework of law and politics, JUDICIAL PROCESS:
LAW, COURTS, AND POLITICS IN THE UNITED STATES combines detailed
information about the major structures and processes of the
American judiciary with an insider's understanding of the
importance of courthouse dynamics. From the organization and
procedures of the various courts to the current applications of
specific laws, the 7th Edition explores the roles and impact of the
judicial system. Throughout the text, the authors not only explain
what the legal rules are but also explore each rule's underlying
assumptions, history, and goals, providing a complete and balanced
look at the role of the judicial system today.
Both as historian and maker of culture, Foucault infused numerous
disciplines of study with a new conceptual vocabulary and an agenda
for future research. His ideas have called central assumptions in
Western culture into question and altered the ways in which
scholars and social scientists approach such issues as discourse
theory, theory of knowledge, Eros, technologies of the Self and
Other, punishment and prisons, and asylums and madness. The
contributors to this volume indicate Foucault's achievements and
the suggestive power of his work, as well as his methodological
weaknesses, historical inaccuracies, and ambiguities. Above all,
they attempt to show how one can use Foucault to go beyond him in
opening new approaches to cultural history. Though
comprehensiveness was not attempted, their essays broach the major
controversial aspects of Foucauldian cultural history--the position
of the subject, the fusion of power and knowledge, sexuality, the
historical structures and changes--and they explicitly analyze them
with respect to antiquity, the Renaissance, and the nineteenth
century. In this collection, Neubauer presents analyses by
historians, literary scholars, and philosophers of the entire,
transdisciplinary range of Foucault's oeuvre, emphasizing the rich
suggestiveness of its agenda. The breadth of the undertaking makes
it suitable for seminars and graduate courses in numerous
departments.
Acceptance Sampling in Quality Control, Third Edition presents the
state of the art in the methodology of sampling while integrating
both theory and best practices. It discusses various standards,
including those from the ISO, MIL-STD and ASTM and explores how to
set quality levels. The book also includes problems at the end of
each chapter with solutions. This edition improves upon the
previous editions especially in the areas of software applications
and compliance sampling plans. New to the Third Edition: Numerous
Microsoft Excel templates to address sampling plans are used.
Commercial software applications are discussed at the end of many
chapters. Discussion of quick switching systems has been expanded
to account for the considerable recent activity in this area. Added
discussion of zero acceptance number chained quick switching
systems.

There is no planet B. Activists share how we must inform and
organize ourselves to save the future.  “Act as though
your house is on fire. Because it is.†Following Greta Thunberg,
millions of young climate activists have been taking to the streets
around the globe as part of the Fridays For Future movement. They
demand that we “unite behind the science,†as, for too long,
climate scientists have been ringing the alarm bells about rising
temperatures, tipping points, and the devastating consequences of
extreme weather—but politicians do nothing.  So how do you
begin to end the climate crisis? Luisa Neubauer and Alexander
Repenning begin by telling stories. Neubauer cofounded the youth
climate activist group in Germany and has become its most prominent
voice. In this book she and Repenning weave in personal accounts of
their evolution as climate activists with a thorough analysis of
how climate change impacts their generation, and what every one of
us can and must do about it. The young and old in the United States
and around the world can learn valuable lessons from their European
counterparts. Â
This edited volume examines the importance of quality issues in
contemporary higher education systems in the Asia Pacific. Part One
foregrounds relevant discussions of 'quality' within today's
globalized, interconnected, and complex higher education systems
while Part Two focuses on selected universities in the Asia Pacific
region. Chapter contributors discuss how quality issues and quality
assurance mechanisms are implemented in their situation-specific
systems. Part Three extends the research of higher education
quality assurance in Hawaii Pacific University (HPU) and the
diverse international student body in the Australian higher
education system. The conclusion chapter discusses a typology of
methods used by higher education systems in establishing effective
quality assurance mechanisms.
This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 4.0 license. This volume
presents several case studies highlighting the latest findings in
Industry 4.0 projects utilizing S-BPM features. Their potential is
explored in detail, while the limits of engineering a company from
a communication-centred perspective are also discussed. After a
general introduction and an overview of the book in chapter 1,
chapter 2 starts by condensing the industrial challenges driven by
the German "Industry 4.0" trend to form a concrete vision for
future production industries. Subsequently, chapter 3 introduces
the basic concepts of S-BPM and its capabilities, in particular for
supporting the restructuring of processes. The next three chapters
then present various case studies, e.g. at an SME offering the
production of atypical, unique and special purpose machinery,
equipment and technologically complex units particularly useful in
the automotive and electronic industries; and at a further SME
producing highly-customized floor cleaning machines. Rounding out
the coverage, the last two chapters summarize the achievements and
lessons learned with regard to the road ahead. Overall, the book
provides a realistic portrait of the status quo based on current
findings, and outlines the future activities to be pursued in order
to establish stakeholder-centred digital production systems. As
such, developers, educators, and practitioners will find both the
conceptual background and results from the field reflecting the
state-of-the-art in vertical and horizontal process integration.

This volume examines the changes taking place within graduate
education in the Asia Pacific Region. A collection of essays by
distinguished scholars from eight Asia Pacific nations links
profound changes occurring in the economies and societies of the
region to the many changes taking place within higher education.
Focusing on how the dynamics of a changing global economy are
affecting the ways higher education institutions are responding,
particular changes are seen to be taking place in graduate
education as many societies experience the need to produce
graduates of high quality with elevated qualifications. Such
changes are not without challenge or difficulty as issues of
finance. Questions of appropriate directions of innovation and
overall higher education capacity continue to frame the broader
issue of the changing nature of graduate education.
This edited volume addresses the dynamic global contexts redefining
Asia Pacific higher education, including cross-border education,
capacity and national birthrate profiles, pressures created within
ranking/status systems, and complex shifts in the meanings of the
public good that influence public education in an increasingly
privatized world.
Technology and Workplace Skills for the Twenty-First Century
examines many of the rapid changes taking place at the intersection
of workplace demands and higher education throughout the Asia
Pacific region. The globalized, interdependent twenty-first century
workforce is built around computing, communication, and automation.
These characteristics have changed the ways in which higher
education is connected to the workforce and raised the stakes for
educating students for the changing workforce. In this book,
scholars and education leaders throughout Asia Pacific and the US
investigate how the changing needs of the workforce have shaped
higher education's curriculum, methods, and orientation, and show
how different Asia Pacific countries have responded differently to
these challenges.
This book examines four theses regarding Asian higher education and
development: interplay between cultural traditions, economic
development, globalization, and the evolution of the 'hybrid'
university. Top scholars evaluate these hypotheses and determine
the elements shaping the history and present circumstances of
Asia-Pacific higher education.
This book examines four theses regarding higher education and
development in the Asian region: the interplay between cultural
traditions, economic development, globalization, and the evolution
of the 'hybrid' university. Top scholars from around the world
evaluate how closely these hypotheses resemble present
circumstances and policies and seek to determine the elements
making up Asia-Pacific higher education and shaping the region's
education history.
Asia is rapidly developing a wide variety of regional organisations
and interactive patterns, reflecting in large part its increasing
role in the global economic and political engagements. Higher
education constitutes a distinct sphere of activity within this
overall pattern of regionalization.
