Gadamer's Dialectical Hermeneutics contributes to the growing
literature that takes seriously the significance of Plato for
Gadamer's hermeneutics. What distinguishes this book is the way in
which Lauren Swayne Barthold argues for a dialectic central to
Gadamer's hermeneutics, one that recalls the Platonic chorismos, or
separation, between the transcendent and sensory realms. Barthold
demonstrates that Gadamer, too, insisted on the "in-between" nature
of human understanding as characterized by Hermes: we are finite
beings always striving for infinity that which lies beyond being.
Such a dialectical reading brings clarity to several themes crucial
to, and contested within, Gadamer's hermeneutics. First, we are
helped to see that Gadamer affirms the roles of both theory and
practice for hermeneutics. Second, we are able to appreciate the
nature of truth as the event of understanding that into which we
enter as opposed to that which stands apart from us as a criterion.
Third, we gain insight into the significance of dialogue for
understanding, including the necessary role of the other. And
finally, we are able to substantiate the meaning of the good beyond
being, as a key component to understanding. Gadamer's Dialectical
Hermeneutics presents a reading of Gadamer that avoids the labels
of realism or essentialism, and shows his primary motivation is to
uncover the ethical, indeed dialectically ethical, and practical
nature of philosophy."

This book draws on the hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer to inform
a feminist perspective of social identities. Lauren Swayne Barthold
moves beyond answers that either defend the objective nature of
identities or dismiss their significance altogether. Building on
the work of both hermeneutic and non-hermeneutic feminist theorists
of identity, she asserts the relevance of concepts like horizon,
coherence, dialogue, play, application, and festival for developing
a theory of identity. This volume argues that as intersubjective
interpretations, social identities are vital ways of fostering
meaning and connection with others. Barthold also demonstrates how
a hermeneutic approach to social identities can provide critiques
of and resistance to identity-based oppression.
Environmental Informatics is a fast growing field which deals with
all methods from computer science, environmental planning, ecology
and related subjects. As well as being an interdisciplinary area,
Environmental Informatics provides an interface between all
involved professional groups. Monitoring the state of the
environment, analysing existing data, presenting the data to
scientists and the public, as well as providing decision support
are only some of the topics involved. Environmental Informatics is
therefore a good foundation for the computer-assisted protection of
the environment.
Environmental Informatics (or Enviromatics) is a maturing subject
with interdisciplinary roots in computer science, environmental
planning, ecology, economics and other related areas. Its
practitioners must be prepared to work with many diverse
professional groups. It forms the foundation for computer-assisted
environmental protection. This book contains an edited version of
papers presented at the 3rd International Symposium on
Environmental Software Systems (ISESS '99), which was held at the
University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand, from August 30 to
September 2, 1999, and was sponsored by the International
Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). The text is divided
into six sections: * Enviromatics - Introduction; * Environmental
Issues; * Environmental Information Systems - Tools and Techniques;
* Environmental Information Systems - Implementations; *
Environmental Decision Support Systems; * Specialised Topics. This
state-of-the-art volume will be essential reading for computer
scientists and engineers, ecologists, and environmental planners
and managers.
This richly illustrated book describes the use of interactive
and dynamic graphics as part of multidimensional data analysis.
Chapter topics include clustering, supervised classification, and
working with missing values. A variety of plots and interaction
methods are used in each analysis, often starting with brushing
linked low-dimensional views and working up to manual manipulation
of tours of several variables. The book is augmented by a wealth of
online material.

This book describes how civic dialogue can serve as an antidote to
a polarized public square. It argues that when pervasive
polarization renders rational and fact-based argumentation
ineffective, we first need to engage in a way that builds trust.
Civic dialogue is a form of structured discourse that utilizes
first-person narratives in order to promote trust, openness, and
mutual understanding. By creating a dialogic structure that
encourages listening and reflection, particularities and
differences about fraught identities can be expressed in such a way
that leads to the possibility of connecting through our
fundamental, shared, and deeply felt humanity. Drawing on Plato,
Buber, Gadamer, Dewey, cognitive bias research, as well as the work
of dialogue practitioners, Lauren Swayne Barthold provides a
sustained defense of civic dialogue as an effective strategy for
avoiding futile political arguments and for creating pluralistic
democratic communities.
