This superb collection unites two of A. B. Simpson's finest works,
which together advise and counsel Christians who wish to live a
harmonious existence close to God. Written at the beginning of the
20th century, Simpson's guidance retains its freshness and impact
despite the long lapse of time. His evangelical spirit was
convinced in the truth of his God-divined words, and he partly
attributed the success of missions he oversaw to the profundity of
his words and hymns. The first work, The Life of Prayer, examines
the need for Christian prayer and reflection from multiple
perspectives. Quoting the New Testament scriptures, Simpson
expounds on the words of the gospels, explaining their continued
importance to the faithful in the present day. The second paper,
The Power of Stillness, is a short but sublime meditation on the
importance of a moment's contemplative silence. That moment of
quiet which follows a concluded prayer, recited hymn, or indeed
much music in the church or outside it, is discussed.
The entirety of 'The Holy Spirit' by A. B. Simpson is presented
here, allowing readers to digest the devotional beauty of the
author's reflections from a single, convenient volume. Using his
gifts for expression, his scholarly learning, and the sheer depth
of his spiritual beliefs, A. B. Simpson crafted this compelling
work. In it, he expounds on the essential beauty of God as
manifested in the Holy Spirit, cataloging the appearances of said
spirit and explaining the meaning behind each. The many
manifestations of the Lord, both overt and subtle, are indicated
and discussed by Simpson, whose held extensive knowledge of
scripture. Each chapter of this book begins with a quotation from
the Bible. The length of such quotes varies from a single line to
long tracts. Simpson explains the presence of God and the Holy
Spirit in each of these excerpts, offering insights upon how the
Lord manifested to teach or offer guidance to a given person or
group.
A. B. Simpson's classic commentary on the Gospels takes a
four-pronged approach to the life, virtues and purpose of the Lord
Jesus Christ. Firstly the book considers Christ's role as a savior
of mankind. Simpson ably defines what salvation is, what its
consequences are for believers, and how blessings are dispensed and
received. The second chapter concerns the sanctification of Jesus
Christ; the process through which he acquired rightful renown as a
holy figure. Simpson is careful to define what does and does not
constitute sanctity, dispelling several misconceptions in his lucid
guidance. Thirdly Simpson examines the nature of Christ as a
healer. Striking a contrast between the nature of curative
medicine, and the nature of divine healing, we receive definitions
of what divine healing is and is not. Lastly, the author turns to
the Second Coming of Christ. What this impending event means for
Christians and humanity, and how believers may anticipate and infer
signs of Christ's return to Earth.
2012 Reprint of 1925 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original
edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. "Days of
Heaven on Earth' was compiled by Simpson himself in response to
repeated requests for daily readings. From his over 2,000 printed
sermons, he selected these thought-provoking meditations, one for
each day of the year. This spiritual gold mine met with instant
approval and has been through many printings. Valuable wherever
wise words are treasured. During the beginning of the twentieth
century, Simpson became closely involved with the growing
Pentecostal movement, an offshoot of the Holiness movement. It was
common for Pentecostal pastors and missionaries to receive their
training at the Missionary Training Institute now Nyack College]
that Simpson founded. Through the school and his own writings and
teachings Simpson had a great influence on Pentecostalism, in
particular the Assemblies of God and the Church of the Foursquare
Gospel.
Shall I Take A Torch? is an exploration of A B Simpson's lifetime
experience of Paranormal phenomena. The work puts anecdotal
evidence into context of the wider and greater questions of
creation, and what passes afterwards. Healing, sleep and dreams as
well as nature are treated to a unique perspective. Not being
clairvoyant or clairaudient himself, the author in his own basic
way has tried to come to some understanding on how these gifts of
the spirit manifest themselves and what might be their greater
purpose. From an early age he became aware of the fact that he had
been blessed with a clairvoyant mother with the gift of healing.
Over the intervening years he has sort to form his own views on the
subject of the Paranormal and the mystery of the essence of life
itself. Asking questions initially like "Where do we go from here I
wonder" and "Is there really a continuity to life"? The book
provides food for thought on this most fascinating of all subjects.
