In recent years there has been a tremendous upsurge of interest in manufac turing systems design and analysis. Large industrial companies have realized that their manufacturing facilities can be a source of tremendous opportunity if managed well or a huge corporate liability if managed poorly. In particular industrial managers have realized the potential of well designed and installed production planning and control systems. Manufacturing, in an environment of short product life cycles and increasing product diversity, looks to tech niques such as manufacturing resource planning, Just In Time (lIT) and total quality control among others to meet the challenge. Customers are demanding high quality products and very fast turn around on orders. Manufacturing personnel are aware of the lead time from receipt of order to delivery of completed orders at the customer's premises. It is clear that this production lead time is, for the majority of manufacturing firms, greatly in excess of the actual processing or manufacturing time. There are many reasons for this, among them poor coordination between the sales and manufacturing function. Some are within the control of the manufacturing function. Others are not."

Die mit dem Bohrschen Atommodell verknfipfte, heute bereits klassisch gewordene Quantentheorie wird getragen von der Vorstellung der Teilchenstruktur der Atome und ihrer Bestandteile. Der Anwendbarkeit der fiir Massenpunkte gfiltigen mechanischen Gesetze erscheinen keine Grenzen gezogen, sie werden auch fiir atomare Teilchen als gilltig angenommen. Man redet von Elek- tronenbahnen in derselben Weise, wie man von Bahnen der Ge- schosse und Planeten redet. Daneben besteht ohne jede Beziehung die Vorstellung von Wellen, die insbesondere fiir das Licht und aIle Strahlungsvorgange im Ather gilt. Der Photo- und der Compton-E//ekt zeigen zwar deutlich, daB gelegentlich auch dem Licht die Struktur von Teilchen (Lichtquanten oder Photonen) zu- kommt, doch kann man diese Merkwiirdigkeit vom Standpunkt der klassischen Quantentheorie nicht verstehen. Erst die neue Quanten- oder Wellenmechanik vermag uns Rechenschaft fiber diese Doppelnatur des Lichtes zu geben, ja sie fordert sie sogar fiir die gesamte M aterie, die uns bald in der Gestalt von Teilchen, bald in der von Wellen entgegentritt. Sie gibt uns dabei zugleich eine Anweisung, wann wir die eine oder die andere Erscheinungs- form zu erwarten haben. Gerade in den atomaren Ausdehnungen liegt die GiUtigkeitsgrenze der klassischen Mechanik, die - ahnlich wie die Strahlenoptik im Bereiche der Wellenlangen des Lichtes durch die Wellenoptik - im Bereiche der Atome durch die Wellen- mechanik ersetzt werden muB. Eine eindrucksvolle Bestatigung erfahrt diese Auffassung durch die Elektronenbeugung an Kri- stallen, die den Wellencharakter der Elektronen auBer Zweifel setzt und damit die schon frUher beim Licht erkannte Doppelnatur auch fiir atomare Teilchen offenbart.

Welcome to the world of Kenneth A. Bauer and his many "crash landings" throughout life. Ken grew up in a time when a neighborhood was a mysterious playground waiting to be explored. A time when spending Saturday afternoons at the local movie theater with his friends inspired many adventures. He would discover that many things in his life turned out successfully, a few not so much, and others were just downright funny. This collection of short stories invites the reader to a time when Americans experienced scarcity rather than the abundance we know today. Because Ken's childhood and young adult life spanned from the mid 1930's into the 1950's, falling on hard times meant something entirely different back then. But even as far back as five years old, Ken managed to find amusement in his world. Now he invites you to enjoy his many tales, the way he has told them to his audiences for decades.

Trotz zahlreicher Hinweise darauf, dass verschiedene Messarten sozialer Herkunft zu Unterschieden bei der Erfassung herkunftsspezifischer Disparitaten der Bildungsbeteiligung fuhren, werden soziale Ungleichheiten in der Bildungsforschung uberwiegend eindimensional gemessen. Der tatsachliche Umfang von Bildungsungleichheiten bleibt dabei unerforscht sowie auch deren Erklarung. Besonders betroffen ist die Untersuchung von Prozessen kultureller Reproduktion nach Bourdieu, welche bei der UEbersetzung in quantitative Konstrukte auf beinahe wahllos herangezogene Einzelaspekte reduziert werden. Folglich bleibt ungeklart, wann kulturelles Kapital als angemessener Indikator fur das Zustandekommen von sozialen Ungleichheiten im Bildungssystem heranzuziehen ist. Dieses Buch widmet sich der Frage, wie die Konzeptualisierung sozialer Herkunft den Einfluss kulturellen Kapitals auf soziale Disparitaten der Studienintention verandert.
