Moving the Equity Agenda Forward - Equity Research, Practice, and Policy in Science Education (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Julie A.... Moving the Equity Agenda Forward - Equity Research, Practice, and Policy in Science Education (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Julie A. Bianchini, Valarie L. Akerson, Angela Calabrese Barton, Okhee Lee, Alberto J. Rodriguez
R4,791 Discovery Miles 47 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume takes on the vital tasks of celebrating, challenging, and attempting to move forward our understanding of equity and diversity in science education. Organized thematically, the book explores five key areas of science education equity research: science education policy; globalization; context and culture; discourse, language and identity; and leadership and social networking. Chapter authors -- emerging to established US science education scholars -- present their latest research on how to make science interesting and accessible to all students. The volume includes international voices as well: Scholars from around the world crafted responses to each section. Together, authors and respondents attempt to refine our methods for examining equity issues across classrooms, schools, and policies, and deepen our understanding of ways to promote equity and acknowledge diversity in science classrooms. Moving the Equity Agenda Forward is endorsed by NARST: A Worldwide Organization for Improving Science Teaching and Learning Through Research. The volume gains authority from the fact that it was edited by one current and four former chairs of NARST's Equity and Ethics Committee.

These proceedings present observational and theoretical results on cataclysmic variables (CVs). Main topics include: interrelations among CVs; theory and evolution of classical, recurrent, symbiotic novae; dwarf novae, nova-like and accretion-induced phenomena; the role of magnetic fields in CV evolution; CVs as possible precursors of SNI-a; and links between CVs and super-soft X-ray sources. The work should be useful for astronomers interested in cataclysmic variables.

Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) are well furnished laboratories in which one can investigate a number of important physical processes. These processes include: thermonuclear reactions, nebular physics, winds, mass accretion phenomena on compact objects, magnetohydrodynamics, plasmas, thermal and non thermal radiative processes, relativistic phenomena, dust forma tion, etc . . In the recent year the most exciting development in our opinion was that the small, cold and invisible secondary components of CV s were found to be the prime motors for the evolution of close binary systems, disclosing new scenarios for research. All branches of astronomy and as trophysics often take advantage of the new ideas brought by the study of CVs. It is for this reason, we believe, that meetings on CVs are important for most of the astronomical community. The idea of a Congress on CVs in Padova has been fluttering in the air for a few years. After all - we thought - a large part of the scientific heritage of Padova and Asiago Observatories is represented by the study of variable stars and, in particular, of CV s, as Prof. L. Rosino reminded us at the very beginning of the Congress. We finally chose Abano Terme as the site of the Conference, not merely because Abano is one of the most famous centers in Europe for mud therapy, and astronomers easily suffer from rheumatism, but also because we knew that a very hearty welcome from the Abano Municipality and touristic associations awaited us.
