Bringing together research on the situational determinants of risk propensity and on individual personality predispositions, Boettcher draws on findings from political science, psychology, economics, business, and sociology to develop a Risk Explanation Framework (REF) to study the 'person in the situation'. Using structured, focused comparison, he examines six foreign policy cases from the Truman and Eisenhower administrations to explore how aspirations, fears, time pressures, and other factors influence risk taking. This is thus an important contribution to the study of international relations, foreign policy decision making, prospect theory and risk behavior, personality theory, and information processing.
The present edition differs from the original German one mainly in the following addi tional material: weighted norm inequalities for maximal functions and singular opera tors ( 12, Chap. XI), polysingular integral operators and pseudo-differential operators ( 7, 8, Chap. XII), and spline approximation methods for solving singular integral equations ( 4, Chap. XVII). Furthermore, we added two subsections on polynomial approximation methods for singular integral equations over an interval or with dis continuous coefficients (Nos. 3.6 and 3.7, Chap. XVII). In many places we incorporated new results which, in the vast majority, are from the last five years after publishing the German edition (note that the references are enlarged by about 150 new titles). S. G. Mikhlin wrote 7, 8, Chap. XII, and the other additions were drawn up by S. Prossdorf. We wish to express our deepest gratitude to Dr. A. Bottcher and Dr. R. Lehmann who together translated the text into English carefully and with remarkable expertise."
Metal-arene pi-complexes show a rich and varied chemistry. The
metal adds a third dimension to the planar aromatic compounds and
coordination of a metal to an arene thus not only altering the
reactivity of ring-carbons and substituents but also makes possible
reactions that lead to chiral non-racemic products. This book,
organized in nine chapters and written by leading scientists in the
field provides the reader with an up-to-date treatise on the
subject organized according to reaction type and use. It covers the
wide spectrum of arene activation: from the electrophilic
activation of h6-bound arene by pi-Lewis acid metal complex
fragments, to reactions of nucleophilic h2-coordinated arene
complexes. The preparation of complexes is detailed, as are the
scope, limitations and challenges of reactions in contemporary
pi-arene metal chemistry with special attention given to asymmetric
transformations. The emphasis of the book is on transformations of
interest to organic synthesis and on the use of the complexes as
catalysts or as chiral ligands.
