Rule and Order Dutch Planning Doctrine in the Twentieth Century (Hardcover, 1994 ed.): A. Faludi, A. J. Van Der Valk Rule and Order Dutch Planning Doctrine in the Twentieth Century (Hardcover, 1994 ed.)
A. Faludi, A. J. Van Der Valk
R6,341 Discovery Miles 63 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is about an art in which the Netherlands excels: strategic planning. Foreign observers will need little convincing of the merits of Dutch planning. They will want to know whether routine explanations (small country, industrious, disciplined people hardened by the perennial fight against the sea) hold any water, and they will want to know where to look for the bag of tricks of Dutch planners. Dutch readers need to be convinced first that planning in the Netherlands is indeed effective before contemplating how this has come about. Our message for both is that, to the extent that Dutch planners do live in what others are inclined to see as a planners' paradise, it is a paradise carefully constructed and maintained by the planners themselves. This smacks of Bernard Shaw describing a profession as a conspiracy against laity. However, all knowledge and all technologies are 'socially constructed', meaning that they are the products of people or groups pursuing often conflicting aims and coming to arrangements about what is to pass as 'true' and 'good'. So this takes away the odium of Dutch planners having their own agenda. Positioning ourselves We are in the business of interpreting Dutch planning, and at the same time committed to improving it. This makes us part of the situation which we describe. This situation is characterized by the existence of two divergent traditions, urban design and the social-science discipline called 'planologie'.

European Spatial Research and Planning (Paperback): A. Faludi European Spatial Research and Planning (Paperback)
A. Faludi
R754 Discovery Miles 7 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This third volume in a series of investigations of spatial planning, research, and policy in Europe taps into the treasure trove of research that is ESPON, the European Spatial Planning Observation Network, which has yielded a plethora of studies on the real and anticipated outcomes of European territorial policy. The chapters provide a comprehensive view of how the search for evidence to support the agenda of the European Spatial Development Perspective (ESDP)--now the Territorial Agenda--has proceeded, what the evidence and implications have been, and what other conclusions could have been drawn. The authors demonstrate that a learning exercise like ESPON can contribute to shaping a political agenda, which could serve as a source of inspiration for fellow planners across the Atlantic. Includes more than 20 color maps and other figures

R755 Discovery Miles 7 550 Out of stock

The European Spatial Development Perspective was adopted in 1999 after more than 10 years of transnational networking across linguistic and cultural divides. However, Europe's engagement in spatial planning has escaped the attention of many North American and even European planners. Based on a 2001 Lincoln Institute conference, this book provides lessons for those interested in spatial planning, theory, and practice.
Includes a full-color insert of 21 maps.
