Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made

This book is distinctive because it will be a political science
oriented introduction to "The Federalist Papers." As most of the
editions have introductions by historians, and some of them quite
good, there is no readily available edition with a political
science focus. Such a focus would not ignore the historical
dimensions of the founding and that particular era, but would
supplement this historical background with a concentration on the
key questions political scientists tend to ask when reading and
teaching "The Federalist Papers." Questions of power, separation,
blending, federalism, and structural design and how they impact the
practice of government, questions we political scientists ask, will
be the central feature of this edition. The primary audience for
this edition would be courses in American Political Thought,
American Government (most of which include components of the
Federalist Papers) plus courses on the Presidency, Congress, The
Judiciary, and Federalism.
The 1960s counterculture challenged the mainstream practices
that dominated the 1950s, producing such groups as the hippies,
Diggers, the National Organization for Women, and the American
Indian Movement, all of which demanded societal change. The A-Z
entries in this volume provide fascinating details on notable
persons who stirred alternative ideas such as Betty Friedan, Abbie
Hoffman, Andy Warhol, and Stokely Carmichael; events such as
Woodstock, the Moratorium, and various be-ins; and new directions
in music, art, clothing, and language.
This volume provides readers with a historical overview of
prominent militias and other extremist groups and offers extensive
insights into their nature and ideology. Militias in America delves
extensively into the nature and ideology of today's prominent
militia groups, including the Michigan Militia, Virginia Hunt, Ku
Klux Klan, Black Panthers, Skinheads, Liberty Lobby, and the
Militia of Montana.

Rebels and Renegades examines 350 years of history through the eyes
of the uncompromising. Presented in nine clearly written
chronological chapters, this comprehensive reference covers the
major events and personalities in the history of extremism in the
U.S. Besides chronicling the event itself, entries, ranging from
500 to 1000 words, include background information and historic
effects. In addition to the chronology, sidebars highlight
historical, biographical, cultural, and ethical aspects of the
story, tying the past to the present. Topics include the influence
of radical idea on the mainstream, the role of violence in
radicalism, and the evolving relationship between radicals and the
media. An extensive appendix of excerpts, transcripts, and full
source documents round out the work. To see the Introduction, a
list of detailed contents, a generous selection of sample pages,
and more, visit the Rebels and Renegades website.
The central question of this book is when and how does
indigeneity in its various iterations - cultural, social,
political, economic, even genetic - matter in a legal sense?
Indigeneity in the Courtroom focuses on the legal deployment of
indigenous difference in US and Canadian courts in the late 20th
and early 21st centuries. Through ethnographic and historical
research, Hamilton traces dimensions of indigeneity through close
readings of four legal cases, each of which raises important
questions about law, culture, and the production of difference. She
looks at the realm of law, seeking to understand how indigeneity is
legally produced and to apprehend its broader political and
economic implications.
This book takes a novel approach to the question of how law
shapes the contemporary lives of indigenous peoples in North
America. Working through a series of legal cases thematically
linked by a concern with how indigenous difference - indigeneity -
is produced in the courtroom, this book asks the following
questions:
- How does legal discourse and practice allow us to think the
contemporary political context of Native North America?
- What can a critical engagement with law reveal about the lives
of indigenous peoples in this key historical moment?
Through an examination of contemporary property disputes, the
use of indigenous justice in mainstream courts, and the use of
genetic technologies to prove or disprove indigenous identities,
Indigeneity in the Courtroom provides insight into how law,
culture, and the production of difference operate in the early
twenty-first century.
