African Realism explains Africa's international conflicts of the
post-colonial era through international relations theory. It looks
at the relationship between Africa's domestic and international
conflicts, as well as the impact of factors such as domestic
legitimacy, trade, and regional economic institutions on African
wars. Further, it examines the relevance of traditional realist
assumptions (e.g. balance of power, the security dilemma) to
African international wars and how these factors are modified by
the exigencies of Africa's domestic institutions, such as
neopatrimonialism and inverted legitimacy. This study also
addresses the inconsistencies and inaccuracies of international
relations theory as it engages African international relations, and
especially, its military history
An outstanding cast of contributors led by Charlie Jeffery, Ailsa
Henderson and Daniel Wincott, confront the idea of 'methodological
nationalism', that is the uncritical choice of the 'nation-state'
as a unit of analysis that dominates postwar social science. It
looks within the state to a regional-scale unit of analysis. Using
specially collected data from 14 regions across five European
states Citizenship After the Nation State explores how citizens
define and pursue collective goals at regional scale as well as at
the scale of the 'nation-state'. It shows that regional
institutions, actors and processes have transformed the state, in
many ways 'de-nationalizing' it, and recasting it as a more complex
form of political organisation, one that needs to respond to the
demands of distinctive regional political communities as well as
the political community as organized at the state-level. What comes
'after the nation-state' is, in other words, not the regional
disintegration of the state or the emergence of a 'Europe of the
Regions', but rather the consolidation of multi-levelled statehood.
A Guide to Laser Safety is a practical guide to the safe use of
lasers in science, education, industry, telecommunications,
medicine and entertainment. It explains the nature of laser
hazards, the requirement of international safety standards and the
effective implementation of safety controls. A Guide to Laser
Safety is divided into three sections. Part One gives an overview
of the essentials of laser safety, briefly describing the nature of
laser technology, the hazards of laser radiation, the system of
laser classification and general approaches to hazard control. Part
Two presents the background to laser safety in greater detail,
discussing laser operations, the measurement of laser emission and
exposure, the biological effects of laser radiation, the management
of health and safety, and the quantitative assessment of laser
hazards. Part Three considers the practical implementation of laser
safety in specific areas of application, covering the use of lasers
in science and engineering, industrial processing, medicine,
telecommunications and entertainment.

Integrated care is arguably one of the most important developments
in the delivery of health care over the last few years. This new
approach to health care, roughly defined as the provision of
behavioral or mental health care in a way that is more coordinated
with the primary medical healthcare setting, has the focused goal
of providing a more complete care for the patient. This book
focuses on three main content areas. Firstly, the treatment of
psychological problems in the context of primary medical care will
be addressed in several chapters. Secondly, several chapters
address co-morbid psychological factors that play a key role in the
effective medical management of physical diseases, either acute or
chronic. Finally, several chapters address issues relevant to the
overall practice of integrated care. This book is intended to
extend and bridge the existing literatures of integrated care,
behavioral medicine, consultation-liaison psychiatry, medical cost
offset, and healthcare economics, by providing a comprehensive and
current handbook of the clinical protocols that might be applied to
the practice of integrated care.
When Childhood relationships are carried on into adulthood,
sometimes it's hard to remember why you were friends in the first
place. Especially when there are secrets that not everyone knows
about each other. Daniel considers himself a true friend to all,
but he senses that there are times when Stacy is more receptive to
Big Anthony. Even though they have all known each other since they
were in grade school, Big Anthony and Stacy always have that
certain connection that no one else can figure out. And with
everything else going on in Daniel's life with his
on-again/off-again girlfriend Melissa, he feels like his
opportunities for happiness are progressing slower than normal.
Stacy has never been a true believer in "a lifetime of happiness."
Her views and ideals on relationships stem from an abusive home
environment that she just cannot let go of. Men are disposable and
love never means what people want it to mean. The only steady
relationships she has had are her close nit group of friends. But
only one of them truly knows all of the demons that haunt her. Big
Anthony has been her closest confidant since high school, the only
one she trusts with all of her past. But when she, Big Anthony and
the rest of their friends are confronted with a devastating loss,
and unforeseen circumstances, it takes all of Stacy's courage, will
and faith to see how much they all can overcome and move on from
the past to the future.
This study presents a refined Afrocentric critique of world
politics. Rejecting earlier wholesale condemnations of
Eurocentrism, the author instead roots Afrocentrism in its capacity
to offer itself as a worldview supportive of scientific paradigms
suggesting social science theory. Arguing that African
peoples--their history and humanity--are denigrated in many
Eurocentric analyses, Henderson makes clear that Africans in
particular, though not exclusively, must promote paradigms rooted
in their own historical image and interests. The author offers
kimira, an historical African-centered paradigm rooted in an
analysis of cultural groups, as a distinct framework for
explicating global political dynamics, and an appropriate starting
point toward a new understanding of international affairs.

This book provides comprehensive coverage of Lithium (Li) metal
anodes for rechargeable batteries. Li is an ideal anode material
for rechargeable batteries due to its extremely high theoretical
specific capacity (3860 mAh g-1), low density (0.59 g cm-3), and
the lowest negative electrochemical potential ( 3.040 V vs.
standard hydrogenelectrodes). Unfortunately, uncontrollable
dendritic Li growth and limited Coulombic efficiency during Li
deposition/stripping inherent in these batteries have prevented
their practical applications over the past 40 years. With the
emergence of post Liion batteries, safe and efficient operation of
Li metal anodes has become an enabling technology which may
determine the fate of several promising candidates for the next
generation energy storage systems, including rechargeable Li-air
batteries, Li-S batteries, and Li metal batteries which utilize
intercalation compounds as cathodes. In this work, various factors
that affect the morphology and Coulombic efficiency of Li anodes
are analyzed. The authors also present the technologies utilized to
characterize the morphology of Li deposition and the results
obtained by modeling of Li dendrite growth. Finally, recent
developments, especially the new approaches that enable safe and
efficient operation of Li metal anodes at high current densities
are reviewed. The urgent need and perspectives in this field are
also discussed. The fundamental understanding and approaches
presented in this work will be critical for the applicationof Li
metal anodes. The general principles and approaches can also be
used in other metal electrodes and general electrochemical
deposition of metal films.
The chapters in this section place the problems of vegetation and
climate interactions in semi-arid regions into the context which
recur throughout the book. First, Verstraete and Schwartz review
desertification as a process of global change evaluating both the
human and climatic factors. The theme of human impact and land
management is discussed further by Roberts whose review focuses on
semi-arid land-use planning. In the third and final chapter in this
section we return to the meteorological theme. Nicholls reviews the
effects of El Nino/Southern Oscillation on Australian vegetation
stressing, in particular, the interaction between plants and their
climatic environment. Vegetatio 91: 3-13, 1991. 3 A.

regions are very sensitive to a variety of physical, chemical and
biological degradation processes collectively called
desertification.
Ecological Methods by the late T.R. E. Southwood and revised over
the years by P. A. Henderson has developed into a classic reference
work for the field biologist. It provides a handbook of ecological
methods and analytical techniques pertinent to the study of
animals, with an emphasis on non-microscopic animals in both
terrestrial and aquatic environments. It remains unique in the
breadth of the methods presented and in the depth of the literature
cited, stretching right back to the earliest days of ecological
research. The universal availability of R as an open source package
has radically changed the way ecologists analyse their data. In
response, Southwood's classic text has been thoroughly revised to
be more relevant and useful to a new generation of ecologists,
making the vast resource of R packages more readily available to
the wider ecological community. By focusing on the use of R for
data analysis, supported by worked examples, the book is now more
accessible than previous editions to students requiring support and
ideas for their projects. Southwood's Ecological Methods provides a
crucial resource for both graduate students and research scientists
in applied ecology, wildlife ecology, fisheries, agriculture,
conservation biology, and habitat ecology. It will also be useful
to the many professional ecologists, wildlife biologists,
conservation biologists and practitioners requiring an
authoritative overview of ecological methodology.
The aim of this book is to offer some help to teachers who are not
very confident of their own understanding of mathematics, but want
to give some basic help to dyslexics and others in the particular
areas needed by them. To that end the chapters give separate topics
with clear explanations for the teacher of the content to be
taught, suggestions about how to teach it, exercises with answers,
and in the Appendix a list of helpful materials and software.
Teachers can pick out a topic without necessarily following the
order in the book.

In a time long since past, in the forgotten lands of Lore, now
known as Arteah, live a few scattered remnants of an antediluvian
race: the Nephilim (nef-il-eem). Thought to be half man and half
fallen angel, these supernatural titans of strength and might were
the heroes of old, men of renown. (Gen. 6:4) Now, the ancient lands
are in peril as one such Nephilim, the evil Count Vladimir,
threatens to plunge the medieval world into a new age of darkness.
Claiming to be immortal, he conquers towns, enslaving its people
and burning their books. And one very old book in particular. But a
faithful knight, who is secretly a Nephilim, stands in his way. Who
are these Nephilim? What is the mystery surrounding their dark
origins and great power? And how is one ancient book the key to
unraveling Count Vladimir s dark age and saving the world? Embark
on a dangerous journey in this epic tale of faith, betrayal, and
sacrifice. NephilimTheRemnants.com

Where will people live and work in 21st Century America? Everyone
has to live somewhere, but very few people will live in the old
urban centres of the 19th and 20th century. The old urban centres
burdened with so much obsolescence and enormous replacement cost
for their basic utilities just don't have the ability to hold so
many people even if the people wanted to live or work there.
Increasing, at just 3% per year, the US population will be 556
million in the year 2022 and by 2047 over 1.166 billion! Just as
technology created the old urban centres, new technology is now
spawning the new urban centres in rural America and beyond. The
sands of time have covered many large urban centres all over the
world. They came to life, flourished and then expired when
conditions changed. The many ghost towns in America along with the
decay of many urban centres are also mute testimony to the
transitory nature of man's accomplishments and to the powerful
influence of climate change, wars, natural disasters and most
significantly in the last century, new technology. Our new urban
centres will not only be in rural America, but even in the now
remote parts of Alaska, Canada, Australia, the Orient and most
significantly, the Moon and Mars. With some understanding of how
technology drives these changes, we can be better prepared to plan
for the future and accept the changes.
Like the Olympic torchbearers, Christians are also called to pass a
torch from generation to generation. The light of biblical
Christianity shines in the world today because faithful believers
through the ages dedicated themselves to the accurate transfer of
doctrine to new Christians and then equipped them to live out this
truth. This is our legacy, our calling in Christ, and the best
inheritance we can leave our children. There is no greater
privilege or honor in life than to be a torchbearer for Christ.
