Gary A. Braunbeck was born in Newark, Ohio in the Year of the Rat
and has been apologizing for it ever since. After surviving eight
years of Catholic school, he studied for the priesthood until he
didn't anymore. He's worked at a variety of occupations over the
years, including actor (stage, television, one movie), musician, a
carny "stick," animal groomer, short-order cook, bartender, janitor
(six stints at that one), newspaper reporter, and habilitation
supervisor for developmentally disabled adults. When he's not out
and about accosting strangers to forgive him for his sins, he can
usually be found holed up in his office, writing, which everyone
agrees is best not only for him, but society at large. He made his
first professional fiction sale, "Amymone's Footsteps," to Twilight
Zone's NIGHT CRY in 1985 and has been writing and selling steadily
ever since. To date, he's published nearly 200 short stories in the
horror, science fiction, western, fantasy, and mystery fields. His
published novels include In Hollow Houses, Isaac Asimov's I-Bots:
Time Was (co-written with Steve Perry), This Flesh Unknown, and The
Indifference of Heaven (the last nominated for both The
International Horror Guild and Bram Stoker award for Outstanding
Novel). Among his collections are Things Left Behind (another Bram
Stoker-nominated work), Escaping Purgatory (in collaboration with
Alan M. Clark), and GRAVEYARD PEOPLE: The Collected Cedar Hill
Stories, Volume 1. Borderlands Press will be releasing another
collection, this a compilation of short-shorts, entitled The Little
Orange Book of Odd Stories, sometime in 2004. x3 is his first
science fiction collection.
The Republican Party is best understood as the vehicle of an
ideological movement whose leaders prize commitment to conservative
doctrine; Republican candidates primarily appeal to voters by
emphasizing broad principles and values. In contrast, the
Democratic Party is better characterized as a coalition of social
groups seeking concrete government action from their allies in
office, with group identities and interests playing a larger role
than abstract ideology in connecting Democratic elected officials
with organizational leaders and electoral supporters. Building on
this core distinction, Asymmetric Politics investigates the most
consequential differences in the organization and style of the two
major parties. Whether examining voters, activists, candidates, or
officeholders, Grossman and Hopkins find that Democrats and
Republicans think differently about politics, producing distinct
practices and structures. The analysis offers a new understanding
of the rise in polarization and governing dysfunction and a new
explanation for the stable and exceptional character of American
political culture and public policy.
Cryopreserved allograft tissues are now standard materials for
the reconstructive cardiac surgeon. Since publication of the first
edition ("Cardiac Reconstructions with Allograft Valves") in 1989,
the field has progressed dramatically with increased clinical use
of cardiovascular allograft tissues, with the development of new
surgical techniques, and with advances in the understanding of the
fundamentals of valve transplantation biology and cryopreservation.
As a result, over two-thirds of the present volume represents new
material. Fifty-six authors bring their expertise to thirteen
comprehensive, lavishly illustrated sections which discuss the
principles of the use of homograft valves, major clinical series of
homograft valves for both left and right ventricular outflow
tracts, cryopreserved allograft tissue for cardiac reconstruction,
cell biology of heart valve leaflets, cryobiology of heart valve
preservation, morphological, biochemical, and explant pathology
studies of allograft heart valves, allograft valve banking, as well
as detailed explanation of surgical techniques for valve and root
methods for left and right ventricular outflow tract
reconstructions, the Ross operation and variants, and complex
reconstructions. A final section presents potential future
directions for the field. Over 400 illustrations, created expressly
for this book, depict the surgical techniques from the perspective
of the surgeon standing at the operating table. All surgeons
performing pediatric and/or adult valve replacements and
reconstructive cardiac surgeries will benefit from the described
methods. Cardiothoracic residents and cardiologists will also find
the text useful. It will provide the surgeon with an enhanced
understanding of the biological and material properties of
allografts and increased familiarity with the range of surgical
techniques applicable for the use of these valves, particularly in
the successful management of challenging cardiac
reconstructions.>
Polsby and Wildavsky’s classic text, now updated by Stephen
Schier and David Hopkins, argues that the institutional rules of
the presidential nomination and election processes, in combination
with the behavior of the mass electorate, structure the strategic
choices faced by politicians in powerful and foreseeable ways. We
can make sense of the decisions made by different political
actors—incumbents, challengers, Democrats, Republicans,
consultants, party officials, activists, delegates, journalists,
and voters—by understanding the ways in which their world is
organized by incentives, regulations, events, resources, customs,
and opportunities. Thoroughly revised and updated, this Sixteenth
Edition provides everything students need to know about
presidential elections going into the 2024 cycle.

The Harvard Celtic Colloquium was established in 1980 by two
graduate students in the Harvard University Department of Celtic
Languages and Literatures as a forum in which graduate students
could share their work and gain experience in professional
academia. Since then, it has been organized annually by a team of
students in the department, grown in size, and gained an
international reputation which annually draws a diverse mix of
scholars from around the world to present papers on all facets of
Celtic Studies. The Harvard Celtic Colloquium is the only
conference in the field of Celtic Studies to be wholly organized
and run by graduate students. Since its inception, established and
internationally-renowned scholars in Celtic as well as graduate
students, junior academics, and unaffiliated scholars have been
drawn to this dynamic setting, presenting papers on ancient,
medieval, and modern topics in the many disciplines relating to
Celtic Studies; including literature, linguistics, art, archeology,
government, economics, music, and history. Papers given at the
Colloquium may be submitted for review to the organizers of the
conference, who become the editors for those papers selected for
publication in the Proceedings of the Harvard Celtic Colloquium.
Only papers presented at the annual conference are considered for
publication. Harvard University Press is proud to announce that we
will distribute the Proceedings of the Harvard Celtic Colloquium.
A major need of all cardiologists and surgeons involved with the
application of allograft tissue to cardiac surgical reconstructions
is met by this unique atlas. Step by step, it carefully describes
the procedures involved in acquiring, sterilizing, and
cryo-preserving allograft valves as well as the surgical technique
used in left and right ventricular outflow tract reconstructions.
All of the information needed to perform the reconstructions is
given, including relevant references and applicable variations in
method. Excellent illustrations accompany the description of
surgical technique. All of the techniques are based on classic
approaches, but assimilate the authors' modifications arrived at
through vast experience. The wealth of references, illustrations
and expertise in this volume make it a valuable asset for all
cardiac surgeons.

The national electoral map has split into warring regional bastions
of Republican red and Democratic blue, producing a deep and
enduring partisan divide in American politics. In Red Fighting
Blue, David A. Hopkins places the current partisan and electoral
era in historical context, explains how the increased salience of
social issues since the 1980s has redefined the parties' geographic
bases of support, and reveals the critical role that American
political institutions play in intermediating between the behavior
of citizens and the outcome of public policy-making. The widening
geographic gap in voters' partisan preferences, as magnified
further by winner-take-all electoral rules, has rendered most of
the nation safe territory for either Democratic or Republican
candidates in both presidential and congressional elections - with
significant consequences for party competition, candidate strategy,
and the operation of government.

As two high powered attorneys working for an influential New
England power company are explaining the benefits of building a
power plant on Shermans Creek, a pair of camouflage clad rednecks
interrupt the meeting and shotgun the lawyers to death in front of
the crowd. Then they disappear into the woods of Perry County. FBI
Agent Jim Slade is brought in to find the killers and bring them to
justice. His main suspect is a redneck named Harry Land.
Land, a recovering alcoholic, strikes a chord with Agent Slade,
whose own beloved father was a longtime member of AA. Land
convinces Slade of his own innocence, but persuades the FBI agent
to investigate a larger conspiracy which includes bribery,
intimidation and murder. This unlikely pair team up to uncover the
series of crimes connected to the building of the power plant,
while fighting against political intrigue and threats against them
and their families. The justice they seek against all odds would
satisfy the small piece of redneck in everyone, while saving a
stream called Shermans Creek. Some of the most powerful people in
the country will do anything to make sure that doesn't happen.

David is called back from his exotic life in the Far East by a
family tragedy. He makes the arduous journey home, distracted by
the painful circumstances from noticing the strange events taking
place around him as he travels. Upon arrival he finds himself
confronted by the past, some of which threatens to spoil his
relationship with Jean, the love of his life. He becomes first
suspicious, then embroiled in a mystery, and when someone makes an
attempt on Jean's life he decides that it's time to act. Will he be
able to get to the bottom of things? Will he achieve the life he
has always wanted, with a family of his own? Or will one of those
ghosts from his past return to haunt him permanently? In what is
essentially a love story, follow David as he works to reconcile
history with the present, and to give Jean the future she deserves.
James A Hopkins has always had an aptitude for the arts - at school
he excelled in woodwork and art, and later won a scholarship to Art
College. Two years into his course, his studies were interrupted by
the Second World War. He spent four years in the service of the
Royal Navy and travelled to many places, mainly in the Far East.
After service, he worked as a cabinet maker, an occupational
therapist and a woodwork teacher respectively, before turning his
hand to writing.
Polsby and Wildavsky's classic text argues that the institutional
rules of the presidential nomination and election processes, in
combination with the behavior of the mass electorate, structure the
strategic choices faced by politicians in powerful and foreseeable
ways. We can make sense of the decisions made by differently
situated political actors-incumbents, challengers, Democrats,
Republicans, consultants, party official, activists, delegates,
journalists, and voters-by understanding the ways in which their
world is organized by incentives, regulations, events, resources,
customs, and opportunities.
Presents a collection of seventeen essays that explores the
dramatic changes in Western conceptions of the body, encompassing
the cultural shifts that occurred across Empire, religion and
science, from antiquity to the eighteenth century.
