Die Ereignisse der vergangenen Jahre haben uns vor Augen gefiihrt, wie sehr unser heutiges Leben von der Energiefrage abhangt. Die Verfiigbarkeit und der Preis von Energierohstoffen bestimmen zum entscheidenden Teil Wirtschaft und Wohlstand in den verschiedenen Regionen der Welt. Erdol ist derzeit der dominierende Faktor. Als Erganzung und als Alternative dazu sind zunehmend andere Energietrager notwendig, urn die heute bestehende einseitige Abhangigkeit zu mildern. Dies ist besonders wichtig fiir den StraBenverkehr, der heute nahezu ausschlieBlich yom Erdol abhangt. In der heutigen Diskussion urn Moglichkeiten, den StraBenverkehr der Zukunft mit alternativen Kraftstoffen zu versorgen, spielen die Alkohole Methanol und Ethanol eine besondere Rolle. Methanol als der KraftstotT, der sich preisgiinstig aus allen kohlenstoffhaltigen Energietragern, fossil oder nachwachsend, herstellen laBt. Ethanol als der KraftstotT, der mit einfacher Technologie aus nach- wachsenden RohstotTen erzeugt werden kann. Die beiden Autoren, die die Aufgabe iibernommen haben, die wesentlichen Fragen der Herstellung und der Anwendung von AlkoholkraftstotTen zu be- handeln, kennen die Problematik aus eigener jahrelanger Forschungsarbeit bei der Erstellung und Optimierung von Alkoholmotoren und Alkoholfahrzeugen sowie aus der vergleichenden, systemanalytischen Betrachtung verschiedener KraftstotT- technologien. Sie geben damit Antworten auf die wesentlichen Fragen, die heute zu diesem Thema gestellt werden.

Als mir vor gerade drei Jahren nahegelegt wurde, die Dar- stellung, die ich vor langerer Zeit in meiner" Theorie der optischen Instrumente nach ABBE" *) gegeben hatte, zu uberarbeiten, zu be- richtigen und zu vervollstandigen, musste ich mir bald sagen, dass ich selbst, schon wegen meiner starken beruflichen Inanspruch- nahrne, ausser stande sei, das zu tun. Bei naherer UEberlegung schien es mir aber auch fur die Sache dienlicher, wenn statt eines Bearbeiters, dessen Erfahrungskreis, Wissen und Urteil notwendig ein beschranktes, einseitiges ist, mehrere sich zur Loesung dieser Aufgabe zusammenfanden, und eine solche Mehrheit bot sich natur- gemass in dem Kreise der wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiter der Firma eARL ZEISS dar. Es konnte dabei die Auswahl der Bearbeiter so erfolgen, dass jeder das oder diejenigen Themata erhielt, die seinem besonderen Wirkungskreis am nachsten liegen, zu deren Behand- lung er daher am besten vorbereitet war. Andererseits gab diese Zusammensetzung der Mitarbeiter eine moeglichst weitgehende Garantie dafur, dass trotz ihrer Vielheit die unvermeidliche Verschiedenheit der Auffassungen und der Darstellungsweisen auf das tunlieh ge- ringste Mass zuruckfuhrbar sei. Dadurch wurde also auch derjenige Mangel zum mindesten sehr gemildert, den die Bearbeitung eines groesseren Themas durch verschiedene Personen stets aufweisen wird. Dieser Plan fand zu meiner grossen Genugtuung bei allen Be- teiligten die freundlichste Aufnahme; auch Herr Professor ABBE hat ihm von Anbeginn seine volle Sympathie zugewandt.

The government, the media, HMOs, and individual Americans have all embraced programs to promote disease prevention. Yet obesity is up, exercise is down, teenagers continue to smoke, and sexually transmitted disease is rampant. Why? These intriguing essays examine the ethical and social problems that create subtle obstacles to changing Americans' unhealthy behavior.

The contributors raise profound questions about the role of the state or employers in trying to change health-related behavior, about the actual health and economic benefits of even trying, and about the freedom and responsibility of those of us who, as citizens, will be the target of such efforts. One key issue explored throughout the book is the fundamental ambivalence of traditionally libertarian Americans about health promotion programs: we like the idea of good health, but we do not want government or others posing threats to our personal lifestyle choices.
