Ralph A. Lewin
R5,795 Discovery Miles 57 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Origins of Plastids looks at symbiosis and symbiogenesis as a mechanism of evolution. This theory of endosymbiotic evolution postulates that photosynthetic prokaryotes living as endosymbionts within eukaryotic cells gradually evolved into the organelle structures called chloroplasts. The theory is controversial but has been strongly advocated by Lynn Margulis. Based on a colloquium held at the Bodega Bay Marine Laboratory of the University of California at Davis, Origins of Plastids reviews recent data on this most basic problem in plant evolution. In it, leading researchers in the field apply the theory of endosymbiotic evolution to plastid origins, producing an important new reference work for both professionals and graduates interested in the origins of life, the origins of the eukaryotic cell and its organelles, and the evolution of the higher plants in general. Origins of Plastids represents the state-of-the-art in its field. It should find a place on the bookshelves of people interested in microbiology, plant science, phycology, cell biology, and evolution.

Ralph A. LewiQand Lanna Cheng In physics, the discovery of new (more properly, hitherto undetected) particles has often resulted from a search: like the discovery of America, their existence had been postulated but their actual existence awaited confirmation. In biology, new discoveries are rarely made in this way. The existence of an alga like Prochloron, as a putative ancestor of chloro plasts, had been postulated, but in fact its discovery was a consequence of fortuitous events. Green algal symbionts in didemnid ascidians had been known for decades to a few marine zoologists who had worked in coral reef areas, but nobody had bothered much about them. When we happened to find them, under boulders on a seashore in Baja California, Mexico, where we were taking part in a student expedition, we didn't bother much either at first, though they worried us a little. With our portable microscope we could see no nuclei in the cells, which, according to the dogma accepted at the time, indicated that they were blue-green algae-yet they didn't look blue-green. They were leaf-green, like green algae and higher plants. We made desultory attempts to grow them in culture, in variously enriched seawater media, but failed. (This proved to be a frustrating experience, all too frequently repeated on subsequent expeditions. ) We collected enough for electron microscopy, though, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies indicated that the cells were unequivocally prokaryotic."

Writing Readable Research - A Guide for Students of Social Science (Hardcover, New): Beverly A. Lewin Writing Readable Research - A Guide for Students of Social Science (Hardcover, New)
Beverly A. Lewin
R2,730 Discovery Miles 27 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Like the sound of the proverbial tree falling in a forest with no human audience, research that is not ultimately published is 'unheard' and forever lost. Moreover, published research that is not reported well may not stand a chance in today's competitive academic world. Those whose first language is not English bear a double burden in trying to make themselves heard and understood. "Writing Readable Research" tries to help users create texts that are easy to read, interesting, and dynamic, yet conform to current standards of English, to criteria of the fields of social science, and to conventions of society in general. This book gives attention to all the layers of scientific writing, from nitty-gritty problems in grammar and punctuation to sensitive interpersonal issues such as criticism of other authors and advancing one's own claims. It can be used as part of a course or independently by students. Since the intended users of this textbook are novice writers, whether graduate students or new faculty members, the practical issues are spelled out. On the other hand, since these writers are also sophisticated scientists, the book addresses their need to understand the theoretical rationale and historical background for some of the guidelines. Although "Writing Readable Research" concentrates on journal articles, it also provides valuable advice on the preparation of talks and posters for conferences, abstracts, and professional letters. Most of all, it is enhanced with a little humor, lots of authentic examples from published texts, and some challenging tasks for students to complete, presented in an easy-to-read layout.

Compassion - The Core Value That Animates Psychotherapy (Hardcover, New): Roger A. Lewin Compassion - The Core Value That Animates Psychotherapy (Hardcover, New)
Roger A. Lewin
R3,856 Discovery Miles 38 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The practice of psychotherapy is not simply a matter of technique, but depends on one's entire way of looking at the world, especially at that which is dark and difficult in human experience. Compassion, the intelligent pursuit of kindness, lies at the very heart of the psychotherapeutic enterprise. Using examples drawn from life inside and outside the consulting room, Roger A. Lewin explores the meanings, encounters, and quandaries that arise with the quest to be compassionate. The author considers compassion as a virtue at once personal and political, which both depends on and helps create a social and cultural climate. He considers compassion as it relates to the capacity to listen, to hurting and being hurt, to dependency, to joy, to grieving, to homelessness, to drug use, to institutional life, to evil, and to the self. He uses the understanding of compassion as a way to link what goes on inside the consulting room with what goes on outside it. To reflect on compassion is to seek a tuning fork for the heart, so that we can keep our passion in that part of our living and loving we call work. This helps therapists to be engaged and receptive. While such reflection may sometimes make us uncomfortable, the comfort that comes from remaining numb is ultimately more unbearable.

Merde - Excursions in Scientific, Cultural, and Socio-Historical Coprology (Paperback): Ralph A. Lewin Merde - Excursions in Scientific, Cultural, and Socio-Historical Coprology (Paperback)

Merde is an unusual (very unusual) and witty investigation into a subject you may always have wondered about--but didn't know quite what to ask.

History, biology, anthropology, culture, animal behavior--all of these are the real subjects of Merde. Why can some animals do it on the run, and others can't? Why does camel dung make good fires? What are the fascinating stories of the dung beetles?

Myths and legends, physical features, health and disease, uses for construction and as fertilizers--even nutritional values!--Ralph Lewin writes about them all in the most ingratiating and sophisticated and yet scientific way. Merde is also full of personal adventures and observations, as well as anecdotes and examples.

The scattered literature on this subject is voluminous, but until now no one has perused and compiled it all and given it a personal touch, so to speak. It will be hard not to talk about this treasure trove of a book after you've finished it--or perhaps even when you're in the middle of it.
