Anticipation and Decision Making in Sport (Paperback): A. Mark Williams, Robin Jackson Anticipation and Decision Making in Sport (Paperback)
A. Mark Williams, Robin Jackson
R1,443 Discovery Miles 14 430 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The ability to anticipate and make accurate decisions in a timely manner is fundamental to high-level performance in sport. This is the first book to identify the underlying science behind anticipation and decision making in sport, enhancing our scientific understanding of these phenomena and helping practitioners to develop interventions to facilitate the more rapid acquisition of the perceptual-cognitive skills that underpin these judgements. Adopting a multidisciplinary approach - encompassing research from psychology, biomechanics, neuroscience, physiology, computing science, and performance analysis - the book is divided into three sections. The first section provides a comprehensive analysis of the processes and mechanisms underpinning anticipation and skilled perception in sport. In the second section, the focus shifts towards exploring the science of decision making in sport. The final section is more applied, outlining how the key skills that impact on anticipation and decision making may be facilitated through various training interventions. With chapters written by leading experts from a vast range of countries and continents, no other book offers such a synthesis of the historical development of the field, contemporary research, and future areas for investigation in anticipation and decision making in sport. This is a fascinating and important text for students and researchers in sport psychology, skill acquisition, expert performance, motor learning, motor behaviour, and coaching science, as well as practicing coaches from any sport.

Thomas A. Marks
R4,600 Discovery Miles 46 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is the first major work to be published which analyses the phenomenon of revolutions based on a Maoist model, namely Thailand, the Philippines, Peru and Sri Lanka. Unlike the Vietnamese Communists, however, all these insurgencies modelled on Mao have failed, having been successfully contained by their governments. The question is how did the world's strongest power - America - fail where Third World governments have succeeded? The author seeks to provide the answers in order to learn not only about the Maoist 'people's war' and counter-insurgency, but also to identify the factors which contribute to a revolution.

Perspectives on the American Way of War - The U.S. Experience in Irregular Conflict (Paperback): Thomas A. Marks, Kirklin J.... Perspectives on the American Way of War - The U.S. Experience in Irregular Conflict (Paperback)
Thomas A. Marks, Kirklin J. Bateman
R1,297 Discovery Miles 12 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Perspectives on the American Way of War examines salient cases of American experience in irregular warfare, focusing upon the post-World War II era. This book asks why recent misfires have emerged in irregular warfare from an institutional, professional, and academic context which regularly produces evidence that there is in fact no lack of understanding of both irregular challenges and correct responses. Expert contributors explore the reasoning behind the inability to achieve victory, however defined, and argue that what security professionals have failed to fully recognize, even today, is that what is at issue is not warfare suffused with politics but rather the very opposite, politics suffused with warfare. Perspectives on the American Way of War will be of great interest to scholars of war and conflict studies, strategic and military studies, insurgency and counterinsurgency, and terrorism and counterterrorism. The book was originally published as a special issue of Small Wars & Insurgencies.

Multiteam Systems - An Organization Form for Dynamic and Complex Environments (Paperback): Stephen J. Zaccaro, Michelle A.... Multiteam Systems - An Organization Form for Dynamic and Complex Environments (Paperback)
Stephen J. Zaccaro, Michelle A. Marks, Leslie De Church
R1,345 Discovery Miles 13 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines an emerging organizational form called the multi-team system (MTS). This type of aggregation is being increasingly adopted by organizations and agencies that need to respond to complex strategic problems. There has been increasing interest in MTSs over the last decade to the point where there is now a need to (a) describe these organizational forms more fully, (b) build conceptual frames that can guide research, and (c) begin developing tools to improve the study of MTSs. The purpose of this book is to respond to these needs. The book contains a series of chapters that expand prior conceptual frames of MTSs, defining in more detail the compositional and linkage attributes that characterize such units. The book also explores how such systems emerge and develop, as well as the methods for studying MTSs. The intent of the book is to establish and nurture a strong conceptual and methodological foundation that can guide research and practice with MTSs. Because the notion of MTSs cuts across multiple domains, this book will interest scholars in industrial/organizational psychology, organizational science, management and organizational theory, human factors, sociology, organization communications, and public administration.

The Imperial Lion - Human Dimensions Of Wildlife Management In Central Africa (Paperback): Stuart A. Marks The Imperial Lion - Human Dimensions Of Wildlife Management In Central Africa (Paperback)
Stuart A. Marks
R1,288 Discovery Miles 12 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the 1950s biologists became alarmed by the plight of Africa's wildlife. Since then they have sought to arrest its decline, but increasing competition between wild fauna and expanding human populations shows that protection alone has been inadequate. The conservationists' position and strategies have been progressively eroded: large-scale game cropping schemes have failed to produce expected revenues, the consequences of the tourist industry have been unexpectedly detrimental, and educational programs have rarely convinced rural Africans to conserve resources. Dr. Marks argues that the management and conservation of wild animals in Third World countries must include cultural as well as biological dimensions and that changes in human social systems will be necessary to sustain wildlife and the environmental processes. He describes indigenous attempts to manage wildlife and suggests new research initiatives that would lead to wildlife policies more in keeping with human development needs and with the realities of the rural countryside.

Large Mammals and a Brave People - Subsistence Hunters in Zambia (Paperback, New edition): Stuart A. Marks Large Mammals and a Brave People - Subsistence Hunters in Zambia (Paperback, New edition)
Stuart A. Marks
R1,412 Discovery Miles 14 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Valley Bisa people inhabit the Luangwa Valley in central Zambia. Among them, the hunter, who tracks such large game as the lion, elephant, and buffalo, commands great respect and esteem from the other members of the lineage who traditionally rely on him for their subsistence and protection. Although the social organization and technology of the Bisa people have undergone tremendous change in the last one hundred years, the role of hunter retains its social importance, and the legitimizing hunting rituals have their roots in local history.
Drawing on data collected during his fieldwork among the Bisa continuing since the 1960s, Stuart Marks describes the changes that have occurred in hunting patterns, the sociological variables that govern an individual's decision to become a hunter, and the common cosmological convictions that hunters bring to their profession. Available for the first time in paperback, the new introduction and afterword to this edition reflect on methodological and ideological changes in the anthropological study of African peoples as well as updating the circumstances of the Bisa people since the book's first appearance in 1976.
Through the interventions of the larger national society the Bisa have lost much of their land and access to important portions of their resources while experiencing repression in their struggles to maintain livelihoods with what local assets are left. Nevertheless, Marks notes that they face their hardships with tolerance, integrity, persistence, and humility.
The general reader, as well as prehistorians and anthropologists concerned with human evolution and hunting societies, will find this volume useful. It will also be of interest to wildlife managers and ecologists.
Stuart A. Marks is actively involved in conservation and development work at the local, national, and international levels. Currently he is an independent scholar and consultant and was a Research Professor of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1997 to 2002. He is the author of the award winning "Southern Hunting in Black and White: Nature, History, and Ritual in a Carolina Community," "The Imperial Lion: Human Dimensions to Wildlife Management in Central Africa," and a forthcoming volume, "Wild Animals and Rural African Livelihoods."

People's War - Variants and Responses (Paperback): Thomas A. Marks, Paul Rich People's War - Variants and Responses (Paperback)
Thomas A. Marks, Paul Rich
R1,297 Discovery Miles 12 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Far from being an anachronism, much less a kit-bag of techniques, people's war raises what has always been present in military history, irregular warfare, and fuses it symbiotically with what has likewise always been present politically, rebellion and the effort to seize power. The result is a strategic approach for waging revolutionary warfare, the effort "to make a revolution." Voluntarism is wedded to the exploitation of structural contradiction through the building of a new world to challenge the existing world, through formation of a counterstate within the state in order ultimately to destroy and supplant the latter. This is a process of far greater moment than implied by the label "guerrilla warfare" so often applied to what Mao and others were about. This volume deals with the continuing importance of Maoist and post-Maoist concepts of people's war. Drawing on a range of examples that include Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, the Caucasus, and Afghanistan, the collection shows that the study of people's war is not just an historical curiosity but vital to the understanding of contemporary insurgent and terrorist movements. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Small Wars & Insurgencies.

In the past few decades there has been increasing recognition of the role of perception in successful sport performance. Athletes are dependent on a constant supply of accurate and reliable information from the environment while performing complex movements. Visual Perception and Action in Sport examines the information which is perceived by the human visual system and the way it is utilised to support actions in sport.
A key theme to emerge from each of the chapters of this book is the integration of theoretical knowledge and practical expertise. All three authors have expertise in the teaching and researching of motor learning and control in sport. They are currently undertaking projects in collaboration with universities and research centres around the world.
