The 1923 Yankees started the dynasty - with stars like Babe Ruth,
Wally Pipp, Joe Dugan and Bob Meusel, they won the pennant by 16
games before claiming the franchise's first World Series title.
Five Yankees pitchers won 16 games that year, led by Sam Jones
(21-8), and the team finally defeated McGraw's Giants after losing
to them in the Series two years in a row. This book covers that
first Yankees championship team in great detail, taking the reader
through the entire season, game-by-game.

The course of events since the implementation of NAFTA has had
unexpected elements with significant impacts on North American
integration. First has been the rise of China as a larger source of
imports and production partner than Mexico. Second has been the
rise of security concerns since September 11, 2001. The result has
been much stronger integration between Canada and the US than with
Mexico. Migration issues are now linked with security, which has
risen to a top priority in the international agenda. While
liberalization has furnished strong economic incentives for
integration, it has not provided a sufficient guide for the
political process, which requires leadership and appropriate
institutions to coordinate and regulate the special interest
groups. A coherent and effective North American integration would
be a valuable asset in the context of global integration and
competition, yet the issues involved are quite complex and varied.
North American Integration: An Institutional Void in Migration,
Security and Development examines the current state of North
American integration. Editors Gaspare M. Genna and David A.
Mayer-Foulkes gather an international group of experts to give a
broad, coherent picture of the current, multifaceted process of
integration, and find that institutional development is an
essential component. Divided into three sections, the book:-
Discuss the determinants of integration and shows that the
institutional characteristics of the three countries, including
democracy and basic rights, are the most important. - Provides
examples of institutional building in contexts for which
institutions are lacking, specifically labor, migration and health
issues. - Examines issues such as overall security arrangements,
trade, drug related violence, energy, and the continuing wage gap
among the countries, which have an important bearing on
integration.

Religion, Kunst, Wissenschaft, Politik u. a. darstellt.
gebraucht."

Taxpayers Don't Stand a Chance is an in-depth case study on the
perennial election battleground state of Ohio, including a
microanalysis of Ohio's political landscape. This unique book
describes in rich detail how Ohio went from being an economic and
political leader to a national laggard. As shown by specific
examples, Ohio's fall occurred because the political system puts
entrenched interests ahead of taxpayers and politicians spend
precious resources on the wrong issues or make things worse. With
the news media's failure to give equal coverage to conservative
ideas and to expose government excesses, voters can't make informed
decisions. The political and journalistic failures stop key
economic reforms from being implemented, make it impossible for
Ohioans to prevent higher taxes, and keep Ohio indentured to labor
unions. These failures are happening in states and localities
everywhere. Because Ohio is a battleground state, these failures
have national implications making it a must read for conservatives,
political junkies, and grassroots activists across America. This
book does more than just cite problems, it lays out major reforms
aimed at giving taxpayers a chance to fight back and win.

The Founding Debate is a short guide to one of the most critical
debates in American history: where should the power of our lives
reside? On one side were the Federalists led by James Madison and
Alexander Hamilton who argued that the new powers of the federal
government would not ride roughshod over the sovereignty of the
states. On the other side were the Anti-Federalists, including
Robert Yates and Samuel Bryan, who believed the new federal powers
would lead to the eventual abolishment of state legislatures. Which
side was right? This book contains the five best arguments by the
Federalists and the Anti-Federalists, as well as excerpts from the
ten U.S. Supreme Court decisions that resulted in the power
structure under which we live today. Read the actual words written
by our Founding Fathers and decide for yourself.

The Dismal Science. The Worldly Philosophy. The Science of
Scarcity. Most people think economics is one of the most
challenging and complex fields of study. But with this book, it
doesn't have to be! You will learn how the U.S. economy works in
unbiased, easy-to-understand language. And you can learn it without
the complex equations, arcane graphs, and technical jargon you'll
find in most economic texts. David A. Mayer and Melanie E. Fox
explain:
- Why and how we trade
- How the government intervenes in markets
- Unemployment and inflation
- Supply and demand
- Competitive, financial, and foreign exchange markets
- How the economy is measured
You will also learn about the causes and fallout of the recent
recession and how global climate change may transform the way our
economy operates. Most important, with this introduction, you'll
learn how our complex and dynamic economy affects the way we
actually live our lives.
Neuroprotection is becoming an increasingly recognized and
important part of critical care and perioperative medicine. As
human beings survive increasingly severe life-threatening injuries
and complex surgical interventions, it has become clear that
neurologic injury and dysfunction is a primary driver of long-term
outcome and disability. Neuroprotection is currently
under-recognized as the primary objective in promoting recovery
from life-threatening injuries, illnesses, and procedures. To
address this knowledge gap, Neuroprotection in Critical Care and
Perioperative Medicine provides a concise review of the current
state of the art of clinical care and research. Within the context
of critical care, the specific topics covered will include the
primary forms of brain injury on which neuroprotection research and
intervention has traditionally focused, such as traumatic brain
injury, cardiac arrest, acute ischemic stroke, and intracranial
hemorrhage, as well as CNS injuries related to sepsis and acute
respiratory distress syndrome, mechanical circulatory support, and
premature birth. Within the context of perioperative care, the
specific topics covered will include anesthetic and perioperative
strategies to reduce brain injury from cardiac surgery, aortic
surgery and endovascular repair, carotid endarterectomy, vascular
and endovascular neurosurgery, and other major surgical procedures.
Here is the fascinating account, rich in nostalgia, of the greatest
minor league team in the history of baseball. Ronald Mayer recounts
the wonderful early years of the Newark Bears when millionaire beer
baron Jacob Ruppert, owner of the New York Yankees, purchased the
team from the newspaper publisher Paul Block in 1931. Mayer traces
the Bears' exciting first five seasons under Ruppert and the
building of a farm system that eventually produced the great Yankee
dynasty. These colorful early seasons were sprinkled with some of
the great names of the American pastime: Ed Barrow, Paul Kritchell,
Al Mamaux, Red Rolfe, Babe Ruth, Shag Shaughnessey, Bob Shawkey,
and George Weiss.
The Bears' finest hour, however, came in 1937 with a team that many
experts consider the greatest in the history of the minor leagues.
This book captures all the thrilling moments of that memorable
season--action-packed Spring training at Sebring, Florida, the
day-to-day excitement of the pennant race, the vivid play-by-play
action of the semifinal playoff against the Syracuse Chiefs, the
final playoof against the Baltimore Orioles, and finally, the
spellbinding, unforgettable Little World Series against the
powerful Columbus Red Birds.
This book is packed with photos and colorful profiles of Babe
Dahlgren, Atley Donald, Joe Gordon, Charley Keller, George McQuinn,
manager Oscar Vitt, and the rest of the great Newark players. It's
all here, in the most comprehensive and thoroughly researched book
every published about the Newark Bears.
