This book is the first to focus specifically on cancer
nanotheranostics. Each of the chapters that make up this
comprehensive volume is authored by a researcher, clinician, or
regulatory agency member known for their expertise in this field.
Theranostics, the technology to simultaneously diagnose and treat a
disease, is a nascent field that is growing rapidly in this era of
personalized medicine. As the need for cost-effective disease
diagnosis grows, drug delivery systems that can act as
multifunctional carriers for imaging contrast and therapy agents
could provide unique breakthroughs in oncology. Nanotechnology has
enabled the development of smart theranostic platforms that can
concurrently diagnose disease, start primary treatment, monitor
response and initiate secondary treatments if required. In
oncology, chemotherapeutics have been routinely used. Some drugs
have proven effective but all carry risks of adverse side effects.
There is growing interest in using remotely triggered drug delivery
systems to limit cytotoxicity in the diseased area. This book
reviews the use of theranostic nanoparticles for cancer
applications over the past decade. First, it briefly discusses the
challenges and limitations of conventional cancer treatments, and
presents an overview of the use of nanotechnology in treating
cancer. These introductory chapters are followed by those exploring
cancer diagnosis and a myriad of delivery methods for
nanotherapeutics. The book also addresses multifunctional
platforms, treatment monitoring, and regulatory considerations. As
a whole, the book aims to briefly summarize the development and
clinical potential of various nanotheranostics for cancer
applications, and to delineate the challenges that must be overcome
for successful clinical development and implementation of such
cancer theranostics.
The third Symposium of the Foundation for Life Sciences was held in
February 1983 at the Newport Inn Conference Centre in Sydney. It
was direced towards an understanding of the molecular
neuropathology of muscle and nerve under a wide variety of
conditions that may be induced by external agents or genetic
lesions. The first session on experimental neurology explored the
processes involved in maintenance of nerve and muscle function.
This included many papers on myelination, studies on immune
reactions affecting nerves, on synapses, and on neuronal
development. This section was expanded to explore the control of
muscle function in nerves, including a discussion on cross
reinnervation. Toxic models of disease in the nervous system were
then discussed, including pathological states induced by physical
agents such as kainic acid, diphtheria toxin, and IDPN. A new
dimension was added to the Symposium when for the first time
psychologists participated and contributed to the session on
external stressors and their effects on behavior. Heavy metals,
herbicides, repetitive work, anxiety, and their effects on behavior
and health were all represented. The discussion in this session
attracted much interest from the participants, particularly the
basic scientists.
Written in a clear and accessible style, this book presents a
wealth of practical information to guide the next generation of
educational and developmental psychologists in Australia and New
Zealand in pursuing a career in the field. There are over 800
educational and developmental psychologists in Australia, and over
200 educational psychologists in New Zealand, who represent a
diverse workforce. Pathways to becoming an educational and
developmental psychologist have seen rapid shifts with updated key
competencies that prospective educational and developmental
psychologists need to be aware of. This book gives the reader a
comprehensive understanding of what makes an educational and
developmental psychologist and outlines seven steps required to
become an endorsed educational and developmental psychologist.
Specifically, it offers guidance on understanding the role and its
history, tertiary study requirements, registration requirements,
professional competencies, skills and attributes needed, work
experience, professional associations and member groups,
endorsement and supervision requirements, finding work, and
starting work. With a primary focus on Australia, each chapter also
features a section on the career in New Zealand, with a variety of
psychologists sharing their expertise and reflections from their
experiences in New Zealand. This resource is essential reading for
students, provisional psychologists, and practising psychologists.
At the same time, it provides insights for other educational and
health professionals who may work multi-, inter-, or
transdisciplinary with educational and developmental psychologists.

Russian Tales of Demonic Possession: Translations of Savva Grudtsyn
and Solomonia is a translation from the Russian of two stories of
demonic possession, of innocence lost and regained. The original
versions of both tales date back to the seventeenth century, but
the feats of suffering and triumph described in them are timeless.
Aleksei Remizov, one of Russia's premiere modernists, recognized
the relevance of the late-medieval material for his own
mid-twentieth-century readers and rewrote both tales, publishing
them in 1951 under the title The Demoniacs. The volume offers a new
translation of the original Tale of Savva Grudtsyn as well as
first-ever translations of The Tale of The Demoniac Solomonia and
Remizov's Demoniacs. Russian Tales of Demonic Possession opens with
an introduction that interprets and contextualizes both the
late-medieval and the twentieth-century tales. By providing new
critical interpretations of all four tales as well as a short
discussion of the history of demons in Russia, this introduction
makes an eerily exotic world accessible to today's English-speaking
audiences. Savva Grudtsyn and Solomonia, the protagonists of the
two tales, are young people poised on the threshold of adulthood.
When demons suddenly appear to confront and overmaster them, each
of them teeters on the brink of despair in a world filled with
chaos and temptation. The Tale of Savva Grudtsyn and The Tale of
the Demoniac Solomonia propel us forcibly into the realm of good
and evil and pose hard questions: Why does evil afflict us? How
does it manifest itself? How can it be overcome? Aleksey Remizov's
modernist re-castings of the two stories offer compelling evidence
that these same questions are very much with us today and are still
in need of answers.

This book outlines the historical context that has shaped the
society of Honduras and conditioned its political dynamics over the
past three decades. It demonstrates how contemporary military
regimes have roots in the caudillismo of earlier eras.
Since the retirement of longtime dictator Tiburcio Carias Andino
(1932-1949), the search for institutional stability in Honduras has
led to both democratically elected governments and the imposed
discipline of military rule. Social and economic change has
contributed to the growth of middle-class urban groups, strongly
organized labor unions, and a vigorous peasant movement. The
Honduran armed forces, established in modern form only after World
War II, filled the vacuum of political power that developed as the
Liberal and National political parties failed to address the
problems created by change and national development, but the
authoritarianism of military rule has been countered by historical
patterns of caudillo politics. Despite the revolutionary turmoil
that surrounds the country, Hondurans have successfully conducted
national elections and installed a freely elected civilian
government after more than ten years of military rule. It is within
this mix of "traditional" and "praetorian" governing modes that
Hondurans have fashioned a style of politics conducive to
compromise, which accounts for the country's relative tranquillity
today. In this first comprehensive study of contemporary
Honduras-its land, people, economy, and politics-to be published in
English, Dr. Morris also outlines the historical context that has
shaped the society of this now geopolitically important nation and
conditioned its political dynamics over the past three decades. His
analysis illuminates the characteristics that distinguish Honduras
from its Central American neighbors and that may dictate a unique
course for its political evolution.

"A psychological understanding of the problems associated with male sexuality is urgently needed, for this is one of the dimensions of the male code that has fallen the farthest and the fastest. . . . In this volume, Larry A. Morris provides what we most need at this time: A scholarly examination of male (hetero)sexuality in its broadest context. Dr. Morris surveys, in turn, the biological, developmental psychological, sociocultural, and historical perspectives on male sexuality; then takes up the issues of sexual dysfunctions, sexually transmitted diseases, and the modern men's movement; and finally offers 'a new formula for the cultivation of healthy male sexuality.' The writing is very clear, the material is presented in an interesting manner, and both the author's breadth of knowledge and sense of humor come through delightfully. . . . Dr. Morris, in this outstanding volume, lights the way for all of us as we attempt to reconstruct gender roles for a new millennium." --from the Foreword by Ronald F. Levant As the traditional code of masculinity erodes, emergence of the "new real man" brings a unique challenge to the continuum of a male heterosexual development. The move toward more balanced gender roles is viewed as a must for the next millennium but the process, for many men, is wrought with the confusion and loss. Timely and clearly written, The Male Heterosexual explores biological, developmental, psychological, sociocultural, and historical perspectives of male sexuality. Readers are guided by the expertise and warm humor of author Larry A. Morris on a journey into a wide range of issues surrounding male sexual development. Morris skillfully exposes those elements that need to be discarded, discusses those needing to be retained, and concludes with a new formula for the cultivation of healthy male sexuality. The Male Heterosexual is an ideal text for courses in male or gender issues and additionally, an informative and fascinating read for academics, researchers, mental health professionals, and any sophisticated lay reader interested in a very contemporary look at this issue.
This revealing book illustrates how the passion for war was
fostered and promoted. The author provides detailed evidence of how
and why an image of Germany as a nation determined upon world
hegemony was deliberately promoted by a group of British newspaper
editors, proprietors and journalists. This book examines the role
of these 'scaremongers'. Were they as influential as their critics
claimed? Did they influence the minds of their readers and shape
events? Were they guilty of creating a climate of opinion that
ensured that their prophecies of inevitable Anglo-German war became
fact in 1914?
Finding and using the appropriate legal materials can help social researchers design and execute their research more appropriately as well as assist mental health practitioners seeking answers to legal questions that their practice increasingly presents. Where can social researchers and mental health practitioners go to learn these techniques? Doing Legal Research will enable researchers and practitioners to develop a proficiency in using legal materials by describing how to use the law library to find, cite, and track cases; statutes passed by the state legislatures or Congress; legislative history of these statutes; and administrative rules, regulations, and decisions promulgated by state and federal administrative agencies (such as the Environmental Protection Agency). In addition, the book includes exercises that give readers an opportunity to go into the law library and test developing skills on genuine legal questions. After reading this book, researchers will not only have the skills that will ensure the legal relevance of their initial research question but also the ability to conduct their own evaluation of the legal materials.

I guess everyone has a cousin Ernest. He is the fellow of whom your
mother asks . . . "Why can't you be more like your cousin Ernest?"
Cousin Ernest went to the high school for genius children and got
all A's, even in French. As the years went by, I lost contact with
Cousin Ernest. Then last year, at a family gathering, I met him
again. Sure enough, he had gone to Harvard and become a doctor, a
radiologist. We began discussing his practice and he mentioned that
he performs some fairly risky diagnostic tests. While legally he
was compelled to tell patients about the risks they were
undertaking, he said that risk disclosure was a useless exercise.
"No one has ever refused to undergo the procedure," he said. It was
difficult to argue with his observation that no patient ever
refused to undergo his tests. I understood that the lack of
refusals did not necessarily mean that risk disclosure was a
useless exercise, but his underlying argument was quite compelling.
These lecture notes begin with an introduction to topological
groups and proceed to a proof of the important Pontryagin-van
Kampen duality theorem and a detailed exposition of the structure
of locally compact abelian groups. Measure theory and Banach
algebra are entirely avoided and only a small amount of group
theory and topology is required, dealing with the subject in an
elementary fashion. With about a hundred exercises for the student,
it is a suitable text for first-year graduate courses.
