Stress Management in Work Settings (Hardcover): Lawrence A. Murphy, Theodore F. Schoenborn Stress Management in Work Settings (Hardcover)
Lawrence A. Murphy, Theodore F. Schoenborn
R2,061 Discovery Miles 20 610 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The contributors to this volume address current issues and problems in the field of stress management and provide guidance toward the development, implementation, evaluation, and maintenance of stress management programs in work settings. The authors' aim is to shift the present mind set of brief stress workshops toward more comprehensive actions which target both the organization and the individual worker as intervention points for stress reduction. Collectively labeled as stress management, methods such as muscle relaxation, meditation, biofeedback, and cognitive strategies have been taught to workers as a means of reducing psycho-physiological and subjective distress. These preventative strategies have focused exclusively on the healthy individual worker. As presently defined, stress management has a negligible role in reducing organizational stress. The authors suggest that a more appropriate application would be a complement to job redesign or organizational change intervention. They also argue that conceptual issues are as important as logistical ones in determining program success.

The book is divided into three parts. Part I deals with organizational stress and its assessment. Part II describes aspects of stress management as applied in work settings, and the third part is a collection of resources for training materials, products, and equipment. "Stress Management in Work SettingS" is a professional book aimed at the users who will ultimately make the decision to offer a stress reduction program, decide what type of action will be taken, and actually implement the action.

Practical Manual of Operative Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 1997): R.W. Powers Practical Manual of Operative Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 1997)
R.W. Powers; Edited by Ricardo Azziz; Illustrated by J. Taylor; Edited by Ana A. Murphy
R4,208 Discovery Miles 42 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Peritoneoscopy and culdoscopy were first introduced in the second edition of TeLinde's Operative Gynecology in 1953. TeLinde noted, "In many instances we find peritoneoscopy to be a useful procedure. Nevertheless it often left something to be desired." During the subsequent four decades, enormous progress has allowed the expansion of the application of laparoscopy and hysteroscopy throughout gynecol- ogy. Thus, it is appropriate and quite useful to have a text devoted solely to this rapidly advancing specialty. In its second edition, the text Practical Manual of Operative Laparoscopy and Hys- teroscopy is a complete and honest overview of the field providing the reader with a critical appraisal of the current literature on technique, development, and long- term follow-up. Refreshingly, the authors include not only the American experi- ence but also advances from Europe and Asia. Ricardo Azziz and Ana Alvarez Murphy have carefully organized the text into general concepts and laparoscopic and hysteroscopic operative techniques. The editors have selected authors of national and international stature to prepare chap- ters in their areas of expertise. The edited text carefully analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of each operative technique so as to allow readers insight as to the proper place for a particular endoscopic technique in their surgical practices.

James M. Rehg, Susan.A Murphy, Santosh Kumar
R5,248 Discovery Miles 52 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume provides a comprehensive introduction to mHealth technology and is accessible to technology-oriented researchers and practitioners with backgrounds in computer science, engineering, statistics, and applied mathematics. The contributing authors include leading researchers and practitioners in the mHealth field. The book offers an in-depth exploration of the three key elements of mHealth technology: the development of on-body sensors that can identify key health-related behaviors (sensors to markers), the use of analytic methods to predict current and future states of health and disease (markers to predictors), and the development of mobile interventions which can improve health outcomes (predictors to interventions). Chapters are organized into sections, with the first section devoted to mHealth applications, followed by three sections devoted to the above three key technology areas. Each chapter can be read independently, but the organization of the entire book provides a logical flow from the design of on-body sensing technology, through the analysis of time-varying sensor data, to interactions with a user which create opportunities to improve health outcomes. This volume is a valuable resource to spur the development of this growing field, and ideally suited for use as a textbook in an mHealth course.

Geography - Why It Matters (Paperback): A. Murphy Geography - Why It Matters (Paperback)
A. Murphy
R330 Discovery Miles 3 300 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Ever since humans sketched primitive maps in the dirt, the quest to understand our surroundings has been fundamental to our survival. Studying geography revealed that the earth was round, showed our ancestors where to plant crops, and helped them appreciate the diversity of the planet. Today, the world is changing at an unprecedented pace, as a result of rising sea levels, deforestation, species extinction, rapid urbanization, and mass migration. Modern technologies have brought people from across the globe into contact with each other, with enormous political and cultural consequences. As a subject concerned with how people, environments, and places are organized and interconnected, geography provides a critical window into where things happen, why they happen where they do, and how geographical context influences environmental processes and human affairs. These perspectives make the study of geography more relevant than ever, yet it remains little understood. In this engrossing book, Alexander B. Murphy explains why geography is so important to the current moment.

The objectives in this special issue are (1) to critically review current information on the mechanisms coupling extracellular regulatory signals to regulation of cross-bridge cycling and proliferation in smooth muscle, and (2) identify significant gaps or unresolved issues that are important topics for future research. The experimental and analytical difficulties discussed above are increasingly recognized and surmounted. Elucidation of the molecular and cellular events underlying the biologal properties of smooth muscle is in the midst of a period of rapid progress. While the reviews reveal many gaps to be filled and illustrate areas of contention, they also capture the excitement of new discoveries.

R1,616 Discovery Miles 16 160 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Rapid developments continue to take place in the research of viruses, the causative agents of infectious diseases in humans, animals, plants, invertebrates, protozoa, fungi, and bacteria. A still growing number of more than 30,000 viruses, virus strains, and subtypes are being tracked in various specialty laboratories and culture collections. In this situation of expansion and specialization, the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses was founded to establish, refine and maintain a universal virus taxonomy system giving information to virologists about the characteristics of the different groups of viruses. The Committee s Sixth Report includes one order, 71 families, 11 subfamilies, and 175 genera and more than 4,000 member viruses. On 600 printed pages large amounts of molecular biologic data, illustrated by micrographs and virion diagrams, gene maps and tables give a comprehensive overview and prove helpful in teaching, in diagnostics, in scholarly research, and in the practical areas of medicine, veterinary medicine, plant pathology, insect pest management, and biotechnology. ..". est une reference indispensable pour les chercheurs, les enseignants, les medecins ou les veterinaires mais aussi pour les etudiants et d une maniere generale pour toutes les personnes interessees par la virologie . Cultural Hegemony in the United States (Hardcover): Lee Artz, Bren A. Murphy Cultural Hegemony in the United States (Hardcover)
Lee Artz, Bren A. Murphy
R4,577 Discovery Miles 45 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Popular usage equates hegemony with dominance?a meaning far from Antonio Gramsci?s original concept where hegemony appears as a contested culture that meets the minimum needs of the majority while serving the interests of the dominant class.

This text is the first to present cultural hegemony in its original form?as a process of consent, resistance, and coercion. Hegemony is illustrated with examples from American history and contemporary culture, including practices that represent race, gender, and class in everyday life.

U.S. cultural hegemony depends in part on how well media, government, and other dominant institutions popularize beliefs and organize practices that promote individualism and consumerism. Corporate dominance and market values reign only through the consent of the majority, which, for the time being - finds material, political, and cultural benefit from existing social relations. As deep social contradictions undermine brittle hegemonic relations, the subordinate majority - including blacks, women, and workers will seek a new cultural hegemony that overcomes race, gender, and class inequality.

M.E. Muller; Contributions by F Baumgart, J. Buchanan, J a Disegi; Rigmor Texhammar, …
R3,330 Discovery Miles 33 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The original AO/ASIF Instrumentation manual presented a concise and complete description of the AO instruments. Thoughtfully developed by Fridolin Sequin and Rigmor Tex hammar, the manual discussed in a clear fashion the purpose and care of the various AO instruments that are handled by the operating room staff. One important feature of the first edition was a detailed checklist of the instruments required for the more common operative procedures for treating fractures. Fridolin Sequin was well-suited to author the first edition: his 15 years of experience as a technical engineer for the AO gave him in-depth knowledge of AO instruments, and he drew on the clinical knowledge of Rigmor Texhammar, a consultant and di rector of the AO courses for nurses. Its original feature of com bining a column of text with a column of illustrations meant the manual quickly became accepted as a standard. By 1981, trans lations could be found in English, French, Spanish, and Italian. Not surprisingly, the manual was very popular."

Fenner and White's Medical Virology, Fifth Edition provides an integrated view of related sciences, from cell biology, to medical epidemiology and human social behavior. The perspective represented by this book, that of medical virology as an infectious disease science, is meant to provide a starting point, an anchor, for those who must relate the subject to clinical practice, public health practice, scholarly research, and other endeavors. The book presents detailed exposition on the properties of viruses, how viruses replicate, and how viruses cause disease. These chapters are then followed by an overview of the principles of diagnosis, epidemiology, and how virus infections can be controlled. The first section concludes with a discussion on emergence and attempts to predict the next major public health challenges. These form a guide for delving into the specific diseases of interest to the reader as described in Part II. This lucid and concise, yet comprehensive, text is admirably suited to the needs of not only advanced students of science and medicine, but also postgraduate students, teachers, and research workers in all areas of virology.
