Owen investigates what the manuscripts of the Canterbury Tales reveal about the way they came into being. [see revs] This study of the manuscripts of the Canterbury Talescalls into question previous efforts to explain the complexities, the different orderings of the tales and the extraordinary shifts in textual affiliations within the manuscripts. Owen sees the manuscripts that survive, most of them collections of all or almost all the tales, as derived from the large number of single tales and small collections that circulated after Chaucer's death. This theory takes issue with all modern editions of the Canterbury Tales, which in Owen's view reflect the effort of medieval scribes and supervisors to make a satisfactory book of the collection of fragments Chaucer left behind. It is this collection of fragments, the authentic Tales of Canterbury by Geoffrey Chaucer, which reflects the different stages of the plan that was still evolving at his death. CHARLES A. In histories of enslavement and in Black women's history, coercion looms large in any discussion of sex and sexuality. At a time when sexual violence against Black women was virtually unregulated-even normalized-a vast economy developed specifically to sell the sexual labor of Black women. In this vividly rendered book, Emily A. Owens wrestles with the question of why white men paid notoriously high prices to gain sexual access to the bodies of enslaved women to whom they already had legal and social access. Owens centers the survival strategies and intellectual labor of Black women enslaved in New Orleans to unravel the culture of violence they endured, in which slaveholders obscured "the presence of force" with arrangements that included gifts and money. Owens's storytelling highlights that the classic formulation of rape law that requires "the presence of force" and "the absence of consent" to denote a crime was in fact a key legal fixture that packaged predation as pleasure and produced, rather than prevented, violence against Black women. Owens dramatically reorients our understanding of enslaved women's lives as well as of the nature of violence in the entire venture of racial slavery in the U.S. South. Unsettling the idea that consent is necessarily incompatible with structural and interpersonal violence, this history shows that when sex is understood as a transaction, women are imagined as responsible for their own violation.

Why would she do it? It's close to midnight at the South Florida newspaper where Alton works when he decides to take a break from writing his story and calls Wanda, an old Chicago friend whom he hasn't spoken to in over a year, to see how she's getting along. When Wanda's daughter Corinne answers the phone, she doesn't remember Alton and is wary of why he is calling. Eventually Corinne informs him that her mother died quite some time ago, but that she left him a small package. If Alton wants to find out what is in the package, Corinne says he will have to come to Chicago to pick it up because that's what her mother specified in writing on the package itself. Soon after hanging up from Corinne, Alton calls a mutual friend who knew Wanda well to find out what she may know about what happened. What he discovers is that the woman whom he once loved to the point of distraction didn't just die, she set herself on fire in her car then drove into an oncoming truck. Why would she do it? Trying to unravel not only why Wanda committed suicide (and why he may have been at least partially responsible) but why she felt compelled to leave him a mysterious farewell package more than 10 years after a much younger, much angrier, much more confused Alton had fled Chicago while there was still enough of him left to save is what prompts him to return there and retrace the steps of his considerably less stable past. An elusive pursuit of a musical and writing career leads him down unexpected self-exploratory alleys and back roads that sometimes lead to an uncomfortable and unintended exploration of internal sexual conflicts as well. But the harder he struggles to define his specific place in the world, the more blurred those boundaries become. At its heart, "Fire and Wanda" is a dual mystery; the mystery behind a heartbroken ex-prostitute's suicide and the mystery of a young man's fractured identity. In America you can be anybody you want to be, and living a lie is only a lie if you believe the truth.

"Who Stole the Zmulobeast?" is a humorous detective story for middle school-aged children. The story introduces the Pi in the Sky Squad, a crew of (mostly) kid detectives comprised of a talking dog with a wise-cracking sense of humor, a hovering space alien from the Planet Acabagua, a rambunctious collection of exceptionally curious youngsters, and Chief, the poor adult tasked with supervising this bunch. In this, their first adventure, the Pi Squad must find out who stole a creature known as a Zmulobeast - just as soon as they can figure out what a Zmulobeast is.
