Dank der reichen, neueren Arbeiten von BABA (Japan), BURN (Australien), EDMuNDs (West-Afrika), GOSLINER (Sud-Afrika), LEMCHE (Nordatlantik), MAcFARLAND (Califor nia, Ostpazifik), MARCUS und DU BOIS-REYMOND MARCUS (Sao Paulo, Westatlantik), ODHNER (Skandinavien), ROGINSKAYA (Schwarzes Meer, UdSSR), THoMPsoN und BROWN (Grossbritannien) sind heute die Nudibranchia vieler Faunengebiete besser be kannt als die des europaischen Mittelmeeres. Dort finden sich rund dreimal so viele Arten wie in der sudlichen Nordsee, dies freilich bei meist weit geringerer Individuenzahl. Das bedingt, dass viele Arten schwer zu erhalten und wenig erforscht sind. Es ist daher das Hauptanliegen dieses Buches, die im vorigen Jahrhundert vor allem durch BERGH, A. COSTA, DELLE CHIAJE, MAZARELLI, PELSENEER, TRINCHESE, VAYSSIERE und VERANY gut bearbeitete, dann aber bis auf PRuvoT-FoLS Werk und wertvolle faunistische Einzel studien von BOUCHET, HAEFELFINGER, Ros, SORDI, TARDY und VICENTE eher vernachlas sigte mediterrane Fauna zunachst einmal soweit systematisch und anatomisch zuganglich zu machen, dass sie relativ leicht und sicher bestimmbar ist und mit derjenigen des Pazifik und West-, Nord-und Sud atlantik vergleichbar wird. Erst dieser Vergleich ermog licht weitere zoogeographische und stammesgeschichtliche Aussagen. Auch hoffen wir, dem Nicht-Systematiker durch zahlreiche neue Daten zur Autokologie und Embryologie Hilfe und Anregung zu geben. Das ausgewertete Material wurde seit 1954 von A. PORTMANN und seinen Mitarbei tern, u.a. Dr. HAEFELFINGER, Frau S. BOUSANI-BAUR, Frau E. FIORONI und Dr. U. BUR GIN-WySS in Villefranche und Banyuls gesammelt und skizziert, seit 1964 von L. SCHME KEL und Mitarbeitern in Neapel und Banyuls. Die Beschreibungen des speziellen Teils stammen von L. SCHMEKEL."
