Fundamental Properties of the Neutron (Hardcover): Yu.A. Alexandrov Fundamental Properties of the Neutron (Hardcover)
Yu.A. Alexandrov; Translated by T.F. Drozdova
R1,023 Discovery Miles 10 230 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The neutron is an elementary particle that has been extensively studied, both theoretically and experimentally. This book reviews and analyses the results of the mainly experimental research on the neutron and rationalizes what is known so far about its intrinsic properties. The book covers topics that have not previously been dealt with in detail, including the gravitational properties of the neutron, precise determination of its mass, beta-decay, and its electromagnetic properties. This translation is an updated version of the original Russian text and also covers the more recent advances made during the past 7-8 years, including the application of methods based on the storage of ultra-cold neutrons to the study of beta-decay, new precise measurement of the mass of the neutron, and confirmation of modern theories of the internal structure of the neutron.

Theory of Superconductivity - From Weak to Strong Coupling (Paperback): A. S. Alexandrov Theory of Superconductivity - From Weak to Strong Coupling (Paperback)
A. S. Alexandrov
R1,987 Discovery Miles 19 870 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Theory of Superconductivity: From Weak to Strong Coupling leads the reader from basic principles through detailed derivations and a description of the many interesting phenomena in conventional and high-temperature superconductors. The book describes physical properties of novel superconductors, in particular, the normal state, superconducting critical temperatures and critical fields, isotope effects, normal and superconducting gaps, tunneling, angle-resolved photoemission, stripes, and symmetries. The book divides naturally into two parts. Part I introduces the phenomenology of superconductivity, the microscopic BCS theory, and its extension to the intermediate coupling regime. The first three chapters of this part cover generally accepted themes in the conventional theory of superconductivity and serve as a good introduction to the subject. Chapter 4 describes what happens to the conventional theory when the coupling between electrons becomes strong. Part II describes key physical properties of high-temperature superconductors and their theoretical interpretation. Alternative viewpoints are discussed, but the emphasis is placed on the bipolaron theory.

Polarons and Bipolarons in High-Tc Superconductors and Related Materials (Paperback, Revised): E. K. H. Salje, A. S.... Polarons and Bipolarons in High-Tc Superconductors and Related Materials (Paperback, Revised)
E. K. H. Salje, A. S. Alexandrov, W. Y. Liang
R1,576 Discovery Miles 15 760 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

With the discovery of high-temperature superconductors, research into polarons and bipolarons has attracted much attention. This book is the first standard reference to give a comprehensive view of the polaron and bipolaron theory of high-temperature superconductivity, one of the most significant discoveries in physics in the past decade. Scientists have also observed polarons and bipolarons in magnetic semiconductors and transition metal oxides. The thorough investigation of these nonsuperconducting materials has contributed greatly to our basic understanding of the physical properties of both polarons and bipolarons. This book contains a series of authoritative articles on the most advanced research on polarons and bipolarons in high-temperature superconductors and related materials. This book will be of great interest to researchers in condensed matter physics, and especially those working in the field of superconductivity.
