Anglophone postcolonial studies has been characterized by its secular nature. Yet as the first generation of scholars grapples with mortality, a yearning for spiritual meaning is emerging in many texts. This study synthesizes the sacred language used in these texts with critical theory in order to create a holistic frame for interpretive analysis.

The Changing Politics of European Security explores the key security challenges confronting Europe, from relations with the US and Russia to the use of military force and the struggle against terrorism. In the future, the authors conclude, European states will act alone, independent of America, on security matters.

The present volume on Methods and Applications of Nonlinear Dynamics arose mainly from lectures given at the First International Course on Nonlinear Dynamics, which took place in Medellin, Colombia, on 1-5 September 1986. The aims of the Course were to discuss some of the fundamental theoretical ideas of modem nonlinear dynamics and their application to selected areas of physics, and also to help the participants to bridge the gap between textbook presentations and the contemporary research literature. The lectures were intended for and delivered to a PhD-level audience composed of physicists and mathematicians. They were not primarily intended for experts, but rather for scientists interested in performing experimental or theoretical research on nonlinear dynamical phenomena occurring in real physical systems.

The impossibility theorems have suggested many directions: mathematical characterisations of voting structures satisfying various sets of conditions, the consequences of restricting choice to certain domaines, the relation to competitive equilibrium and the core, and trade-offs among the partial satisfactions of some conditions. The links with classical and modern theories of justice and, in particular, the competing ideas of rights and utilitarianism have shown the power of formal social choice analysis in illuminating the most basic philosophical arguments about the good social life. Finally, the ideals of the just society meet with the play of self interest; social choice mechanisms can lend themselves to manipulation, and the analysis of conditions under which given ideals can be realised under self interest is a political parallel to the welfare economics of the market. The contributors to these volumes focus on these issues at the forefront of current research.

In this elegant critique, Amartya Sen argues that a closer contact between welfare economics and modern ethical studies can substantively enrich and benefit both disciplines. He argues further that even predictive and descriptive economics can be helped by making more room for welfare economic considerations in the explanation of behavior, especially in production relations, which inevitably involve problems of cooperation as well as conflict. The concept of rationality of behaviour is thoroughly proved in this context, with particular attention paid to social interdependence and internal tensions within consequentialist reasoning. In developing his general theme, Sen also investigates some related matters; the misinterpretation of Adam Smith's views on the role of self-seeking; the plausibility of an objectivist approach that attaches importance to subjective evaluations; and the admissibility of incompleteness and of 'inconsistencies' in the form of overcompleteness in rational evaluation. Sen also explores the role and importance of freedom in assessing well-being as well as choice. Sen's contributions to economics and ethics have greatly strengthened the theoretical bases of both disciplines; this appraisal of the connections between the two subjects and their possible development will be welcomed for the clarity and depth it contributes to the debate. These essays are based on the Royer Lectures delivered at the University of California, Berkeley.

Die klinische Notwendigkeit und das BewuBtsein neuer technischer Moglich- keiten hatten zu einer raschen Entwicklung der Herzchirurgie gefUhrt, nachdem durch die moderne 1ntubationsnarkose und die Antibiotica der Weg grundsatzlich geebnet war. Auch die Korrektur von Herzklappenfehlern wurde durch den Aus- bau der Verfahren der Hypothermie, der Herz-Lungen-Maschine einschlieBlich der Coronarperfusion und der elektrischen Fibrilation, Defibrilation und des Pacema- kers ermoglicht. Die in diesem Zusammenhang entwickelten kiinstlichen Herzklappen sind heute in vielen Fallen den plastischen Korrekturversuchen infolge ihrer voraus- bestimmbar zuverlassigen Ventilfunktion iiberlegen. Andererseits weisen aIle gegenwartigen Modelle von Herzklappenprothesen deutliche Mangel auf, die zu einer sorgfaltig abgewogenen 1ndikationsstellung zwingen. Manche der prothesenbedingten Komplikationen werden noch durch konstruk- tive Verbesserungen zu vermeiden sein. Andere, die bei der Verwendung kiinst- licher Materialen im Herzen vorlaufig unumganglich erscheinen, sollten in ihrem AusmaBe bekannt und kalkulierbar werden, um im Einzelfalle des herzklappen- kranken Patienten Vor-und Nachteile gegeniiber plastischen Korrekturmoglich- keiten abwagen zu konnen. Die herzkranken Sauglinge haben meinen verehrten Lehrer, Prof. Dr. med. AKE SENNING, Direktor der Chirurgischen Universitatsklinik A, Zurich, seit Jahren ganz besonders beeindruckt.
