The all-volunteer force (AVF), created in conjunction with the end
of the draft in 1973, has been the most significant development in
modern American military history. Since its inception, the
influence of the AVF has reached far beyond the US armed forces,
affecting the very character of American civil-military relations.
While its successes and challenges continue to be widely discussed
and fervently debated, one thing is certain: the AVF is critical to
both US national security and the fabric of American society. The
insightful, cogent, and provocative essays contained in this timely
volume represent a crucial first step in assessing the AVF after
fifty years of service. Here, fifteen renowned authors speak to
vital issues that remain relevant today and will endure well into
the future. The AVF has garnered both triumphs and shortcomings but
continues to be an essential institution. Engaged dialogue about
the AVF is crucial to ensure that it remains ready to meet and
overcome potential threats and that policymakers address the
central obstacles it faces today. The All-Volunteer Force is the
most comprehensive assessment of the force since its advent and
reveals the momentous sway the AVF has had on the military,
government, and society. In crafting this far-reaching collection
of essays, William A. Taylor examines the AVF in four distinct
parts, analyzing its history, results, challenges, and
implications. In doing so, this compelling book explores all the
major facets of the AVF-past, present, and future-that influence
the military, government, and society in the United States. This
dynamic volume brings together a multidisciplinary group of
distinguished authors who each bring to bear important perspectives
on specific aspects of the AVF. These contributors include leading
scholars, general officers, civilian policymakers, and personnel
experts who collectively provide a holistic assessment of the
accomplishments and shortcomings of the AVF during its fifty years
of service.

The book uses Chicago as a case study to examine the cultural
politics surrounding neoliberal education policy in general and the
concomitant alterations to democratic practice in particular. After
juxtaposing the numerous failures of neoliberal education policy
and the language of democratic norms used by those who continually
double-down on these same policies, it examines four distinct but
related policy arenas. Each chapter begins with a vignette of a
particular example of the neoliberal education policy in action.
Taken together, Taylor illuminates the anti-democratic nature of
neoliberal education policy and the toll it takes on democratic
practice in urban space. The book concludes with a discussion of
what resistance might look like in spaces which co-opt democratic
concepts for anti-democratic ends.

The Presidential campaign was a disorganized disaster. Sound
systems failed, planes ran late, arrangements fell through. Most of
the time, candidate Daniel Soltero's handlers couldn't "handle"
anything. And their biggest problem was Soltero himself: a
hot-headed taker of risks, seemingly determined to destroy not only
his campaign schedule but any chance of winning the presidential
primaries. all on live TV! Veteran network correspondent Axel Tyson
has his own troubles. Late one night, his daughter is raped.
Rushing her to the hospital, he wrecks the car, adding to her
injuries. Since his own feelings of guilt and depression are making
it harder for her to recover, he agrees to join the Soltero
campaign press corps. It's a distraction, to get him out of
Washington. Within 48 hours he has killed another rapist, with his
bare hands.
The very first cookbook to celebrate Juneteenth, from food writer
and cookbook author Nicole A. Taylor-who draws on her decade of
experiences observing the holiday. On June 19, 1865, more than two
years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation
Proclamation, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and
issued General Order Number 3, informing the people of Texas that
all enslaved people were now free. A year later, in 1866, Black
Texans congregated with music, dance, and BBQs-Juneteenth
celebrations. All-day cook-outs with artful salads, bounteous
dessert spreads, and raised glasses of "red drink" are essential to
Juneteenth gatherings. In Watermelon and Red Birds, Nicole puts
jubilation on the main stage. As a master storyteller and cook, she
bridges the traditional African-American table and 21st-century
flavors in stories and recipes. Nicole synthesizes all the places
we've been, all the people we have come from, all the people we
have become, and all the culinary ideas we have embraced.
Watermelon and Red Birds contains over 75 recipes, including drinks
like Afro Egg Cream and Marigold Gin Sour, dishes like Beef Ribs
with Fermented Harissa Sauce, Peach Jam and Molasses Glazed Chicken
Thighs, Southern-ish Potato Salad and Cantaloupe and Feta Salad,
and desserts like Roasted Nectarine Sundae, and Radish and Ginger
Pound Cake. Taylor also provides a resource to guide readers to
BIPOC-owned hot sauces, jams, spice, and waffle mixes companies and
lists fun gadgets to make your Juneteenth special. These recipes
and essays will inspire parties to salute one of the most important
American holidays, and moments to savor joy all year round.
During the 1990s the concept of state failure emerged as part of an
attempt to explain and understand the complex, post-Cold War, new
world dis-order. State failure achieved prominence, being applied
to situations of institutional collapse and mass violence that
appeared to herald a new level of international instability.
Ungoverned territories hosted criminal networks, narco-barons, and
terrorists; they would be sources of threats flowing from
environmental degradation and disease. The failed state influenced
profoundly international politics in early-21st century. Exploring
critically the emergence, evolution and consequences of the state
failure concept, Andrew Taylor concludes that despite a superficial
plausibility, it lacks sufficient theoretical and empirical rigour
to understand the varying phenomena gathered under the heading of
state failure. This lack of intellectual depth renders it dangerous
as a guide to policy.
