The last two decades have seen unprecedented increases in health
care costs and, at the same time, encouraging progress in
psychotherapy research. On the one hand, accountability,
cost-effectiveness, and efficiency have now become commonplace
terms for providers of mental health services whereas, on the other
hand, an increasingly voluminous literature has emerged supporting
the effectiveness of a number of types of psychotherapies. There
now exists the possibility for the design and delivery of mental
health services that-drawing upon this literature-more closely
approximate empirically established data concerning the
appropriateness and effectiveness of psychotherapy. The Handbook of
the Brief Psychotherapies is intended to capture one major thrust
of this movement: the development of a group of empirically
grounded, time-limited therapies all sharing a common interest in
the clinical utilization of a structured focus and an emphasis on
time and action. For many years, professional self-interest,
competing theoretical para digms, and the vagaries of practice,
wisdom, and clinical myth have influenced the practice of
psychotherapy. A critical questioning of the resulting, predomi
nantly nondirective, open-ended, and global therapies has led to a
growing emphasis on action-oriented, problem-focused, time-limited
therapies. Yet, ironically, this interest in the brief
psychotherapies has not so much involved a radical departure from
traditional therapeutic modalities as it has emphasized a new
pragmatism about how time, action, and structure operate in life as
well as in therapy."
This volume brings a fresh, original approach to understand social
action in China and Vietnam through the conceptual lens of informal
environmental and health networks. It shows how citizens in
non-democratic states actively create informal pathways for
advocacy and the development of functioning civil societies.

"The Literary and Historical Index to American Magazines,
1800-1850," is an invaluable tool for anyone doing research on the
United States in the 19th century. With an index that includes a
wide range of subjects and individuals, this book provides access
to thousands of references that can currently be obtained from no
other source. The researcher looking for references to and reviews
of well-known authors such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Lydia Huntley
Sigourney, and Edgar Allan Poe will find a plethora of entries to
examine. And, for those engaged in the investigation of
lesser-known figures, the index includes scores of authors who may
not be widely recognized but who, nonetheless, made important
contributions to American culture.
Scholars will find the references easy to follow as well as
comprehensive. In addition to general references, the index
includes the full titles of books, speeches, poems, short stories,
and articles written by subjects so that the reader may select the
most relevant citations for his or her research.
In West Side Story: Cultural Perspectives on an American Musical,
Wells presents a major scholarly study of the famous American
musical West Side Story, viewing the work from cultural,
historical, and musical perspectives. From the "mambo craze" of the
1950s to the work's ongoing permeation of popular culture, Wells
looks at the myriad ways in which this canonic musical reflects and
refracts American culture. Drawing on primary documentary sources,
oral history including interviews with members of the original
creative team such as Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents and
early sketch material, Wells explores the creation and
dissemination of West Side Story to diverse audiences. After a
short history of West Side Story's creation, each chapter
investigates the musical from a different cultural perspective,
examining its relationship to the classical canon and Leonard
Bernstein's investment in that tradition, juvenile delinquency in
the 1950s, feminism and the women of West Side Story,
Latin-American and Hispanic influences, and its international
reception and distribution. Richly illustrated with images and
musical examples and complete with factual appendixes like a
chronological timeline, discography, and cast and crew list, this
fascinating account is exciting for specialists and non-specialists
alike."
In the past thirty years there has been a sea change in North
American intellectual life regarding the role of religious
commitments in academic endeavors. Driven partly by post-modernism
and the fragmentation of knowledge and partly by the
democratization of the academy in which different voices are
celebrated, the appropriate role that religion should play is
contested. Some academics insist that religion cannot and must not
have a place at the academic table; others insist that religious
values should drive the argument. Faithful Imagination in the
Academy takes an approach based on dialogue with various
viewpoints, claiming neither too much nor too little. All the
authors are seasoned academics with many significant publications
to their credit. While they all know how the academy operates and
how to make worthwhile contributions in their respective
disciplines, they are also Christians whose religious commitments
are reflected in their intellectual work.

This updated and revised second edition of Donald A. Wells's
popular _War Crimes and Laws of War_, originally published in 1984,
traces the rules of war since ancient times. The major sources of
the rules or _laws_ of war are explored: the congresses of the
Hague, Geneva, and the United Nations. But an abyss exists between
what military manuals allow and what the congresses prohibit; this
book attempts to resolve this dilemma. An important text for
military college courses and international relations, as well as
social philosophy courses. Co-published with the North American
Society for Social Philosophy. Here is what reviewers had to say
about the first edition:
