Understanding the Psychological Soul of Spirituality is a comprehensive exploration of spiritual constructs based on an empirical, evidence-based paradigm for understanding and addressing spirituality. In a field where there is no current consensus on spirituality, this book provides a much-needed psychologically based definition and ontology that assists helping professionals in formulating their professional identities; developing effective and appropriate training models; furthering their understanding of what spirituality is and is not, from a psychological perspective; and more effectively addressing spiritual issues to support clients. The authors provide a review of current issues in the area of spirituality, also called the numinous, and provide perspectives that address these concerns in ways that promote a fully scientific understanding of the construct. Ultimately the book provides a concise definition of the numinous that places it squarely in the social sciences. Chapters outline the clear value of the numinous for psychology and detail its relevance for professionals' training.
Published in 1905, this book by A. S. Wilkins was intended to provide an introduction to the history of the ancient Roman system of education. It begins from a purely national stage, considering the basis of education in the early Roman Republic, before tracing the historical influence of the flood of Greek culture which poured into Rome from the middle of the third century BC and lasted well into the age of the Empire. Elementary and higher education are examined in respective chapters, and the subject of state endowment is also considered. Wilkins quotes freely from original sources without always providing English translations, so some knowledge of Latin is expected.
Alfred Cort Haddon (1855-1940) was a highly influential British anthropologist and ethnologist who was instrumental in the foundation of a school of anthropology at Cambridge University. During 1898 and 1899, Haddon led an expedition which conducted ethnographical research in the Torres Strait, New Guinea, and Borneo. The main results of this expedition were compiled in a series of volumes, containing contributions from a diverse range of specialists. Originally published in 1904, this is the fifth in that series. The text contains information on the societies and belief structures of the indigenous peoples living in the western islands of the Strait. A large number of illustrative figures are also included, demonstrating a broad variety of traditional practices. This is a fascinating book that will be of value to anyone with an interest in the development of anthropology and ethnology.

The principal purpose of IAU Colloquium No. 35 was to discuss those aspects of the techniques of the compilation, evaluation, and distribution of data that are common to astrometry, photometry and spectrometry of stars and stellar systems. In the announcement of the Colloquium, it was suggested that there would be special emphasis on the techniques of quality control, and on the standards for the presentation of numerical data in both printed and com puter-readable form. As the meeting progressed it became clear that the lack of a standard, unambiguous system for the identifi cation of stellar objects was a source of much confusion and inefficiency in the use of existing data files. This and other such matters were the subject of further discussions by Commission 5 at the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), which was held at Grenoble during the following fortnight, 24 August - 2 September 1976. The proposal for the Colloquium was prepared by J. Jung, who was then Director of the Centre des Donnees Stellaires at Stras bourg, and G. A. Wilkins, Chairman of the IAU Working Group on Numerical Data, and was accepted by the IAU Executive Committee on the recommendation of the President of Commission 5, with the support of Commissions 25, 29 and 45. The Scientific Organising Committee consisted of W. Fricke, B. Hauck, C. Jaschek, J. Jung, B. Kukarkin, P. Lacroute, A. Underhill and G. A. Wilkins (Chair man). "I don’t need to be scared of reading anymore" 17-year-old woman describing the use of coloured overlays. Reading Through Colour tells the story of the discovery and development of the use of coloured overlays and tinted glasses to help overcome reading difficulty, which can sometimes result in almost miraculous improvements. Arnold Wilkins, the scientist who was one of the first to provide the evidence that coloured filters can work, explains how sufferers are often unaware of the effects of visual stress, having no way of realising that others see print differently. They frequently suffer headaches or migraine, but at school can be considered simply lazy. Reading Through Colour explains what the overlays are and how to select them. Throughout, the voices of parents, children and adults tell how improvements in reading speed and fluency have changed their lives. Clear, "how-to" advice on testing and using overlays is included for teachers and other professionals, along with information on where to get further help and advice.
"Every reading teacher needs a copy of this book and their own set of filters. Optometrists and pediatricians will also find this work to be a valuable resource. It is a ‘must read’." Alan Kwasman M.D., Behavioural Pediatrician, Associate Professor, University of California, Riverside

Understanding Biochemical Pathways: A Pattern-Recognition Approach provides students with a clear methodology for understanding metabolic processes, with an emphasis on human metabolic processes. It focuses on specific pathways of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism that illustrate how to apply this pattern-recognition approach. This text presents a "basic recipe" of metabolism to illustrate the general sequence of reactions that are carried out in biochemical pathways to move from one oxidation state of carbon to another. The goal is to give the reader the ability to look at a reaction and determine the type of reaction based on the differences in reactants and products, identify the type of enzyme that would catalyze the reaction, and then name the enzyme based on enzyme naming rules. The second edition features new Check Your Knowledge boxes and content summaries within each chapter. The text also features new content in Chapter 2 on the pawn shop model of metabolism to explain relationships between prominent metabolic pathways. Understanding Biochemical Pathways is an excellent resource for courses and programs in biochemistry, nutrition, medicine, and nursing.

This is about an ordinary young country girl-a slice of her life-born in the fabled Sleepy Hollow, NY, of an interracial family with Christian roots in the height of the nations civil unrest during the "new" Civil Rights era on September 14, 1957. The extraordinary was how a beloved president who commanded the great Civil War for those poor invisible constituents-the Negro slave-like Miss Mary Freeman ("Gun touting Mary," its rumored), Abe Lincoln was vividly described and reminisced about several times a year during her visits to her Dutch and Native grandmother's house, and her fireside chats with Miss Freeman the woman her grandmother had taken in to care for. Miss Mary as was natural helped take care of grandma and her household. And, it tells the reader how both these amazing women molded her life. Valerie's daydreaming in school about a faraway mountaintop she discovered after her famous third letter to the president in spring 1999 was likely Monticello-the plantation of our country's third president Thomas Jefferson. The "silhouette man" reoccurring dream she'd had since childhood was replaced in an unusual twist and dream with the 42nd president William Jefferson Clinton Dismissing this unbelievable scene she would unveil bends, billowing streams and twists and turns all leading back to the president and their ties to Monticello. The nagging and prodding dream ceased. Truths about her uncanny lifelong ties to three of our nation's greatest U.S. presidents, her voracious interracial activism and how it changed everything in 1999 to her letters to her beloved President Bill Clinton wasn't a plethora of mistakes or coincidences, but a fascinating mystery unfolding right beforetheir eyes as the president became more trusting of her and befriended her only it had to be in secrecy. Now you decide. Currently, she's been developing a group for interracial women leaders in politics titled Interracial Women's Political Consortium 2000: its had sever
Of all the philosophical and rhetorical treatises of Cicero, his three books On the Orator (de Oratore) represent perhaps the most polished and appealing. Here is Rome's consummate orator and composer of forensic and political speeches, at the height of his powers, giving the considered results of his personal experience--not the dry theorising and bickering of different schools of declamation--in a way which continually keeps in view the practical needs of one who wishes to play the part of a true Roman citizen in the contests of the popular assemblies and the law-courts. This edition, originally published in 1892, has never been superseded. The information in its extensive introduction and in the meticulous annotation make it essential for any serious study of the work.
