In 1604, when Frenchmen landed on Saint Croix Island, they were far
from the first people to walk along its shores. For thousands of
years, Etchemins--whose descendants were members of the Wabanaki
Confederacy-- had lived, loved and labored in Down East Maine.
Bound together with neighboring people, all of whom relied heavily
on canoes for transportation, trade and survival, each group still
maintained its own unique cultures and customs. After the French
arrived, they faced unspeakable hardships, from "the Great Dying,"
when disease killed up to 90 percent of coastal populations, to
centuries of discrimination. They never abandoned Ketakamigwa,
their homeland. In this book, anthropologist William Haviland
relates the history of hardship and survival endured by the natives
of the Down East coast and how they have maintained their way of
life over the past four hundred years.
As the world population increases, food security is a major global
issue. This book provides an in-depth examination of the three
necessary conditions for the achievement of food security: (1)
availability of food; (2) adequate incomes and (3) increasing
agricultural productivity. The author draws lessons from history,
explores these three conditions and discusses the prospect of
feeding an expected nine billion people in 2050. The author
discusses the major factors inhibiting food being available and
explores how these constraints can be lifted. First, the book
describes conditions necessary for food to be truly, consistently
available. Second, adequate incomes and programs such as food
stamps and foodbanks are explored. Third, the drivers of increasing
agricultural productivity are examined. Agricultural economists and
scientists, food policy practitioners in government and
international organizations and food aid NGOs, and students of
agriculture and public policy will find Food Security as
thought-provoking as it is informative.
Triple bill of crime dramas. In 'Bad Karma' (2012), starring Ray
Liotta and Dominic Purcell, a criminal's attempts to go straight
are sabotaged by his former partner. Relocating from Sydney to the
Gold Coast to start afresh, Molloy (Liotta) is remarkably
successful and even finds something approaching domestic bliss with
a new girlfriend. Naturally, when his old crime partner Mack
(Purcell) tracks him down he finds that Molloy is reluctant to
return to his past life. Unfortunately, this doesn't deter the
increasingly deranged Mack as he sets about convincing Molloy to
help him pull off one last job. In 'The Entitled' (2011) social
misfit Paul (Kevin Zegers) is driven to desperate measures when he
is turned down for yet another job and his ill mother is given a
foreclosure notice on the family home. He enlists the help of two
friends to abduct three kids from rich families and hold them
ransom for a million dollars each, but the plan goes badly wrong
and they soon find themselves in way over their heads. 'Officer
Down' (2012) follows Detective David Callahan (Stephen Dorff),
known as 'Cal' on the force, who has had a mixed career as a police
officer, struggling with drink problems and straying to the wrong
side of the law himself at times. When he finds himself caught up
in a murder investigation, Cal must attempt to overcome the demons
from his own past as well as the challenges of the case.

SIMSOC: Participant's Manual SIMSOC (which is pronounced sim-sock and stands for simulated society) is a dynamic group simulation game that forces participants to cope with the daily problems of governing society. Assuming a variety of roles, the players grapple with issues like abuse of power, justice, diversity, trust, and leadership as they negotiate their way through labor-management strife, political turmoil, and natural disasters. SIMSOC imposes few rules and restrictions upon its participants. There is no programmed outcome. Success or failure is dependent upon decisions made by players and the creativity of the group. To be successful, players must utilize every basic social process from cooperation and reward to threat and punishment. SIMSOC will make participants ask questions about social control, and bring everyday experience and deeper understanding to even the most arcane social and organizational theory. Included in this Fifth Edition of SIMSOC's Participant's Manual are instructions for playing, materials for play, study questions based on participation, and selected readings about simulation games, leadership, and social processes. New to the Fifth Edition are additional size levels to accommodate larger groups, simplified rules, and readings by authors from Nicholas Lemann to Robert Putnam. Each SIMSOC participant should have a copy of the Participant's Manual and the instructor a copy of SIMSOC's Coordinator's Manual, which contains additional materials needed for play and directions on how to set up and run SIMSOC. One Coordinator's Manual will be needed for each SIMSOC exercise of up to ninety participants. It can be obtained, for a $5.00 fee, by writing, on letterhead, to: The Free Press A Division of Simon & Schuster, Inc. Faculty Service Desk 1230 Avenue of the Americas New York, NY 10020
