A secondary purpose is to provide an interpretation for that grow ing group of counselors who do not consider their work pro fessionally in the field of religion, but who have an interest in the relation between what they are doing and religion. The book seeks to deal with a specific approach and method of pastoral counseling. It does not attempt to be definitive. Such a book cannot be written today in this rapidly developing field. Neither does it attempt to cover all of the various aspects of pastoral care. It rather seeks to help the pastor with thosepersons with whom he carries on a counseling relationship. The reader will soon discover that the book does have a definite point of view. The author does not try to label his point of view but he is certain that it will be labeled for him. He is more interested in the description of a process that he believes is fundamental in the counseling work of the pastor. After a long number of years in a given field, it is impossible not to have a definite point of view. It is only in theoretical problems that one can suspend judgment. The pastor, as he meets a per son who needs help, must have a definite point of view as to X INTRODUCTION what help means, what kind of help he can give, how he can give it, and other such questions. If in stating this point of view, the author seems dogmatic at times it is because of his desire to put the situation clearly and sharply. Either the general point of view or specific statements made in the book may be tested by any pastor. The only limitations to experimentation in this field are the pastors inherent regard for personality and desire to do nothing that would injure another person. The aim of the book is not to try to describe what a pastor without proper training can do. The author has a great deal of sympathy for the pastor who feels that his training has been woefully inadequate to the demands made on him in his daily ministry. However, he does not know how to give easy answers that make up for the lack of training. He is rather trying to describe in this book what the pastor should have training to do. He is well cquainted with the obstacles in the way of giving such training to pastors and theological students, but he also sees real grounds foroptimism in regard to future training. This book grows out of a long background of experience as chaplain in a mental hospital, as a counselor in a Y. M. CA. and a Y. W. C. A., as the director of a counseling service for a large city council of churches, as a minister in charge of pastoral counseling in a large city parish, and as a member of the faculty of a theological school. In the past two decades we have seen a surge forward in understanding the genetics and biochemistry underlying many pediatric orthopaedic disorders. A few projects have even progressed into the realm of clinical trials that are primarily aimed at controlling progressive disease. Meanwhile, genomic technology development has outpaced expectations and is enabling gene discovery for disorders that were previously intractable with traditional genetic methods. Included in this latter category are common disorders that display multigenic inheritance, sporadic disorders, and very rare conditions that are difficult to ascertain. Simultaneously, the study of pediatric orthopaedic disorders has been continuously refined and updated, highlighting a number of likely genetic conditions that are as yet unsolved. Molecular Genetics of Pediatric Orthopaedic Disorders updates researchers and clinicians of new developments of pediatric orthopaedic genetics. The chapters inform the audience on the revolution in new genomic methods and the impact this is having on potential study designs and the potential to discover genetic causes of many unsolved orthopaedic conditions. Recent examples have been included of pediatric orthopaedic conditions, both rare and common, that are being solved with these new methods. The book also educates pediatric orthopedic clinicians and geneticists on our understanding of the biology of "classic" genetic diseases that were derived from prior genetic studies. Chapters include biobanks and strategies for studying very rare disorders, genes and pathways causing primordial dwarfism, and notch signaling in congenital scoliosis, and more.
Despite its increasing importance, the verification and validation of the human-machine interface is perhaps the most overlooked aspect of system development. Although much has been written about the design and developmentprocess, very little organized information is available on how to verifyand validate highly complex and highly coupled dynamic systems. Inability toevaluate such systems adequately may become the limiting factor in our ability to employ systems that our technology and knowledge allow us to design. This volume, based on a NATO Advanced Science Institute held in 1992, is designed to provide guidance for the verification and validation of all highly complex and coupled systems. Air traffic control isused an an example to ensure that the theory is described in terms that will allow its implementation, but the results can be applied to all complex and coupled systems. The volume presents the knowledge and theory ina format that will allow readers from a wide variety of backgrounds to apply it to the systems for which they are responsible. The emphasis is on domains where significant advances have been made in the methods of identifying potential problems and in new testing methods and tools. Also emphasized are techniques to identify the assumptions on which a system is built and to spot their weaknesses.

As a tool, simulation is an aid to the imagination, however, if incorrectly or inadequately used, it can lead to inaccurate outcomes that not only limit the possibilities but potentially cause harm. A comprehensive overview of the topic from a human factor perspective, Human Factors in Simulation and Training not only reflects the state-of-the art but also integrates the literature on simulation into a cohesive resource. The editors have collected chapters on a wide variety of topics, beginning with theory and application in areas ranging from traditional training to augmented reality to virtual reality. This coverage includes surface ships, submarines, naval aviation, commercial aviation, space, and medicine. Although system analysis is a well established methodology, the specific application of such analysis to information systems is a relatively new endeavor. Indeed, it may be said to be still in the trial-and-error stage. In recent years, such analysis has been given impetus by the numerous accounts of information system failures, some of which have led to serious consequences -e.g., the accident at Three Mile Island, the chemical spills at Bophal, India, and at Institute, West Virginia, and the loss of the space shuttle Challenger. Analysis of the failure of the W. T. Grant Company, the third largest retail organization in the United States, indicated that improper use of the available information was a significant factor in that failure. In spite of these incidents and their widespread impact, only meager attempts have been made to develop an effective methodology for analyzing the information systems involved in such incidents. There have been no well developed guidelines for determining the causes of such events and for recommending solutions so that similar failures could be avoided. To address the need for such a methodology, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) sponsored an Advanced Research Workshop attended by a group of 32 scientists, scholars, and expert investigators, representing a variety of disciplines and countries.

In recent years, increases in the amount and changes in the distribution of air traffic have been very dramatic and are continuing. The need for changes in the current air traffic systems is equally clear. While automation is generally accepted as a method of improving system safety and performance, high levels of automation in complex human-machine systems can have a negative effect on total system performance and have been identified as contributing factors in many accidents and failures. Those responsible for designing the advanced air traffic control systems to be implemented throughout the alliance during the next decade need to be aware of recent progress concerning the most effective application of automation and artificial intelligence in human-computer systems.
