Juta’s Complete Textbook of Medical Surgical Nursing remains a comprehensive, evidence-based textbook written with the southern African nursing student in mind.
What’s NEW in the 2nd edition:
The nursing care plans have been revised and strengthened with new evidence
The anatomy and physiology of each system is given at the beginning of each chapter/ section in order to provide information on healthy structure and function. This makes it easier for the student to work out the pathology in each instance and understand the presentation of diseases
The focus on the pathology of disease encourages nurses to arrive at a diagnosis and generate the appropriate intervention
Chapters focus on students’ prior knowledge/pre-requisite knowledge so they can build on what they already know
The learning outcomes in the chapters have been reformulated to focus on core learning.
A journalist on the Japan Chronicle for eleven years this volume
examines the history, economy, politics and society of Japan from
just before the First World War until 1926. Japan's relations with
the West, as well as with Russia and China are also discussed.
A journalist on the Japan Chronicle for eleven years, the author
collected in this volume the most significant current events for
discussion. They include the financial crisis of 1927, hostilities
with China and in particular Manchuria, Japan's booming
manufacturing industry, Japanese nationalism, Japan's new empire
and its place within the Far East and East Asia. Written from a
Western perspective, the volume nonetheless presents a balanced
view of Japan and its behaviour which only close observation and
dealings with the Japanese people could make possible.
Human Specialization in Design and Technology explores emerging
trends in learning and training-standardization, personalization,
customization, and specialization-with a unique focus on
innovations specific to human needs and conditions. Analyzing
evidence from current academic research as well as the popular
press, this concise volume defines and examines the trajectory of
instructional design and technologies toward more human-centered
and specialized products, services, processes, environments, and
systems. Examples from education, healthcare, business, and other
sectors offer real-world demonstrations for scholars and graduate
students of educational technology, instructional design, and
business development. The book features insights into the future of
professors, public schools, equity and access, extended
technologies, open educational resources, and more, concluding with
a set of concrete solutions.
This book explores what is known about healthy living among older
women, emphasizing overcoming illness and adversity. Women and
Healthy Aging focuses on common age-related changes and illnesses
that frequently occur among women in the later years. It describes
these diseases and changes, provides treatment options, highlights
preventative measures, and offers suggestions for continued
productive living as women age. Since some of the barriers to
effective diagnoses, treatments, and implementation of productive
living strategies are institutional, two chapters explore public
health policies which affect older women and discrimination against
older women in health care. This informative book assists health
care professionals in the provision of services to older women,
helping these professionals become catalysts for enabling older
women to "overcome adversity" and continue to lead healthy,
productive lives. Many of the most common diseases and age-related
changes that affect older women are not "curable." In a society
which stresses "cure" as the appropriate role for health care
professionals, what are these professionals to do with the legions
of older women for whom "cures" may not be possible? How can they
assist older women in preventing or slowing the occurrences of
diseases and age-related changes? When prevention or cure is not
possible, how can they assist older women in living productive,
meaningful lives?By addressing specific conditions and diseases,
Women and Healthy Aging gives readers focused information on
current treatment options, preventative strategies, and suggestions
for productive living which are disease- or condition-specific and
target older women. Some of the topics covered include menopause,
osteoporosis, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, cancer,
Alzheimer's disease, and sensory loss. Practitioners, educators,
and students in the fields of nursing, social work, physical
therapy, occupational therapy, gerontology, human services, and
medicine will find this book an illuminating source of valuable
information and insights into the aging process for women.
James Bond (Sean Connery) is sent to Japan to keep the peace
between the superpowers when a SPECTRE rocket intercepts an
American space capsule carrying a nuclear warhead. In between
visits to the geisha house and flights in his Little Nellie, 007
manages to track down SPECTRE's secret base and its evil mastermind
Blofeld (Donald Pleasence). Will he be able to stop Blofeld's evil
plans or is this really the end of Bond and the world as we know
it? After this fifth entry in the series, Connery took a break from
the title role, only to return in 'Diamonds Are Forever' (1971).
The steady expansion of the European Union's involvement in health
over the past 20 years has been accelerated by recent events. This
Handbook offers an up-to-date analytical overview of the most
important topics in EU health law and policy. It outlines, as far
as possible, the direction of travel for each topic and suggests
research agendas for the future. Split into five parts, this book
brings together international, interdisciplinary contributions to
consider the past, present and future of EU health law and policy.
The changing membership of the EU could see dramatic changes for EU
health law and policy: the contributors consider current
developments in the light of past trajectories. The book covers key
institutions; policies on people and products; health systems;
public health; and the health implications of the EU's external
trade policies and laws. Wide-ranging and accessible, this Handbook
will appeal to academics and students focussing on EU health law or
policy. It will also be of interest to lawyers and policy makers
working in or with the EU as well as health managers and NGOs.

Contemporary Latin American Cultural Studies is a collection of new
essays by recognised experts from around the world on various
aspects of the new discipline of Latin American cultural studies.
Essays are grouped in five distinct but interconnected sections
focusing respectively on: (I) the theory of Latin American cultural
studies; (II) the icons of culture; (III) culture as a commodity;
(IV) culture as a site of resistance; and (V) everyday cultural
practices. The essays range across a wide gamut of theories about
Latin American culture; some, for example, analyse the role that
ideas about the nation - and national icons have played in the
formation of a sense of identity in Latin America, while others
focus on the resonance underlying cultural practices as diverse as
football in Argentina, TV in Uruguay, cinema in Brazil, and the
'bolero' and soaps of modern-day Mexico. Contemporary Latin
American Cultural Studies has an introduction setting the ideas
explored in each section in their proper context. The essays are
written in jargon-free English (all Spanish terms have been
translated into English), and are supplemented by a concluding
section with suggestions for further reading.
Samuel Wilderspin became a household name in his own lifetime.
Befriended by Dickens, lampooned by Cruikshank, his achievements
discussed in Parliament, he was one of the best known educators of
the 1830s and 1840s. However, Wilderspin's consistent opposition to
denominational education combined with his liberal and advanced
views made him unpopular with the Establishment. Samuel
Wilderspin's fame declined after his retirement in 1847 but his
reputation as an infant school educator has survived. Many of his
ideas and practices have had a great influence on infant education.
In this book, first published in 1982, Wilderspin's own story is
placed in the context of this growing movement led by Owen,
Buchanan and Oberlin, and it goes a long way towards reinstating
him as one of the prominent figures in the early education
movement. This title will be of interest to students of history and
education.
This volume, number 15 in the Studies in Water Policy and
Management Series and joins two other volumes (8 and 10) that
collectively summarize a significant part of the post-World War II
experience of Western experts and donors with the development and
management of irrigation in Third World countries. The evolution of
understanding of Third World irrigation issues has been toward a
greater appreciation of the potential for augmenting traditional
production and water allocation systems with improved institutional
arrangements for achieving allocative efficiency and equity. The
need for local inputs for planning, system operation, and system
maintenance is now widely recognized, as is the need for providing
proper motivation for system administrators. The authors of this
volume offer improved conceptual frameworks and analytic techniques
applied to specific country and regional problems in hopes of
edifying future experts and donors
Traceable as far back as the work of the path-breaking ???Chicago
School??? of Sociology in the 1920s and 1930s, ???subculture??? and
???counterculture??? have long been conceptual staples of the
discipline. Implemented originally to designate and describe
smaller, often deviant or delinquent, groups within larger social
communities, the terms gained pace in their use in mid-twentieth
century criminological research, and especially with the
development of Cultural Studies in the United Kingdom in the 1970s,
where they became widely used to describe processes of social
class-based opposition, resistance and protest. More recently,
sociologists have moved beyond a strict conformity-resistance model
in accounting for the behaviour of sub-communities that coalesce
around particular values, behaviours, or preferences. Indeed,
contemporary sociological research has raised the possibility that
the term ???subculture??? in particular may have entirely outgrown
its usefulness. While the term ???counterculture??? has also
languished, there is no doubt that the sorts of social groups to
which these terms have historically referred are more extensive and
colourful than ever. Certainly this is the case in sport. Put
simply, all societies are replete with their own versions of
???Tribal Play??? which encompass and represent wider social
patterns, processes, and struggles.
This volume is a collection of 16 readings on aspects of
sub-community life in sport that showcases the breadth and depth of
sport subcultural research by a group of international scholars
representing varied theoretical and methodological orientations.
Some of the sport communities examined include soccer hooligans,
enduranceathletes, disabled athletes, environmentally conscious
surfers, and X-Games participants. This fourth volume in the
Research in the Sociology of Sport series is edited by two
sociologists whose academic training, research and teaching span
three of the subdisciplines in which the concepts of
???subculture??? and ???counterculture??? have been most avidly
used and critically tested (Criminology/Youth/Sport), and whose
???subcultural??? ventures both in sport and as sociologists are
extensive. Michael Atkinson is Senior Lecturer in the School of
Sport and Exercise Sciences at Loughborough University in the UK,
and Kevin Young is Professor of Sociology at the University of
Calgary, Canada.
While many analysts emphasize Trump's uniqueness, he can also be
viewed as a symptom of a deeper systemic crisis. This collection
examines the roots, impacts, and future prospects of Trumpism as
well as the possibilities for combatting it. Chapters analyze the
role of racism and xenophobia, evangelical religion, and elite
support in enabling Trump's political ascent, demonstrating how
both his demagogic style and his policies draw from the historic
repertoire of the Right. The authors also trace the impacts of his
presidency on inequality, health, ecological destruction, and U.S.
empire. As far-right forces cement their hold on the Republican
Party, and as the Democratic Party appears unable to stop them,
what lies ahead? The authors argue that confronting Trumpism
requires a frontal attack on the conditions that incubated the
monster.
Water provides benefits as a commodity for agriculture, industry,
and households, and as a public good such as fisheries habitat,
water quality and recreational use. To aid in cost-benefit analysis
under conditions where market determined price signals are usually
unavailable, economists have developed a range of alternative
valuation methods for measuring economic benefits. This volume
provides the most comprehensive exposition to-date of the
application of economic valuation methods to proposed water
resources investments and policies. It provides a conceptual
framework for valuation of both commodity and public good uses of
water, addressing non-market valuation techniques appropriate to
measuring public benefits - including water quality improvement,
recreation, and fish habitat enhancement. The book describes the
various measurement methods, illustrates how they are applied in
practice, and discusses their strengths, limitations, and
appropriate roles. In this second edition, all chapters have been
thoroughly updated, and in particular the coverage of water markets
and valuation of ecosystem services from water has been expanded.
Robert Young, author of the 2005 edition, has been joined for this
new edition by John Loomis, who brings additional expertise on
ecosystem services and the environmental economics of water for
recreational and other public good uses of water.

For centuries philosophers have wrestled with the dichotomy between
individual freedom on the one hand and collective solidarity on the
other. Yet today there is a growing realization that this template
is fundamentally flawed. In this book, Mark Young embraces and
advocates a more holistic concept of freedom; one which is not
merely defined negatively but which positively provides the
preconditions for individuals to actively exercise their autonomy
and to flourish as human beings in the process. Young posits the
idea of 'freedom in community' and traces its origin back to
Aristotle. Taking as his premise that humans are deeply social
beings who live their lives intricately interwoven with each other,
he examines what type of political community is relevant for us in
this post-Classical, post-Enlightenment and, indeed,
post-Existential world. Identifying the failure of traditional
'statist' models of politics, Young instead argues for a civil
society: a globally interlinked and free set of liberal communities
as the best context for nourishing human flourishing. In this way
we can achieve a proper setting for Eudaimonia in a modern sense.
