Yamada s Textbook of Gastroenterology has for 20 years been the
most comprehensive gastroenterology reference book, combining an
encyclopaedic basic science approach to GI and liver disease with
the latest clinical thinking, especially in diagnostic and
therapeutic developments. It is universally respected across the
globe. The original outstanding editorial team was led by Tadataka
Yamada, MD, one of the world's leading figures in GI research. As
in previous editions, the new textbook reflects the collective
efforts of the editors and a hugely impressive team of
contributors, who are each experts in their specific areas. Now
with another world leader in gastroenterology as Editor-in-Chief,
Daniel K. Podolsky MD, President and Professor of Internal Medicine
at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, together
with a stellar group of associate editors, the 6th edition of this
iconic textbook has been expanded and enhanced in many ways with
new content and technology.
The Johns Hopkins Manual for GI Endoscopic Nurses, Third Edition
outlines nursing care before, during, and after endoscopic
procedures. Written with both the novice and experienced nurse in
mind, the Third Edition of The Johns Hopkins Manual for GI
Endoscopic Nurses provides practical tips for all basic and
advanced endoscopic procedures. Dr. Anthony Kalloo is joined by
Mouen Khashab and Toshunia Robinson on the Third Edition of this
popular manual. The Johns Hopkins Manual for GI Endoscopic Nurses
features up-to-date guides to new endoscopic procedures and
techniques, such as fiducial placement, balloon-assisted
enteroscopy, Barrett's ablation, Spyglass cholangioscopy, and
pancreatoscopy. Additional chapters cover sedation, antibiotic
prophylaxis, disinfection, and the management of patients on
anticoagulation medication. General guidelines for moderate
sedation, equipment disinfection, and sterilization are also
discussed, as well as special considerations for patients with
specific medical conditions who are undergoing endoscopy. Endoscopy
nurses, gastroenterology fellows, and gastroenterology
practitioners alike can use The Johns Hopkins Manual for GI
Endoscopic Nurses, Third Edition's endoscopic preparation regimens
to facilitate the correct instruction of patients, reducing the
likelihood of unsuccessful procedures. This spiral-bound resource
also includes the definitions and indications for both common and
advanced endoscopic procedures along with listings of necessary
equipment. The Johns Hopkins Manual for GI Endoscopic Nurses, Third
Edition is easy to read and comprehend, with photographs and
illustrations replacing cumbersome long descriptions, making this
the ideal reference for a nurse on the go.
Wild taxa are invaluable sources of resistance to diseases,
insects/ pests, nematodes, temperature extremes, salinity and
alkalinity stresses, and also of nutritional quality; adaptation;
genetic diversity and new species. Utilization of wild relatives of
a crop depends largely upon its crossability relations with
cultivated varieties. Sev eral wild species are not crossable with
the commercial cultivars due to various isolation barriers.
Furthermore, in a few cases, hybridiza tion is possible only in one
direction and reciprocal crosses are not successful, thus depriving
the utilization of desired cytoplasm of many species. However,
techniques have been developed to over come many barriers and
hybrid plants are produced. New crop species have been developed by
overcoming the F 1 sterility and producing amphidiploids and such
crops are commercially being grown in the field. The segregation
pattern ofF 1 hybrids produced by distant hybridization in
segregating generations are different from the intervarietal
hybrids. In former cases, generally, unidirectional segregation
takes place in early generations and accordingly, selec tion
procedures are adopted. In most of the cases, backcross or modified
backcross methods have been followed to utilize wild species, and
thus numerous types of resistance and other economical attributes
have been transferred in the recurrent parents. Protoplast fusion
has been amply demonstrated in a number of cases where sexual
hybridization was not possible and, as a result, hybrids have been
produced."
The esculent Lycopersicon esculentum, long thought to be poisonous,
has become a major U. S. food crop and source of vitamins and
minerals, thanks largely to genetic modification and new production
technology Rick (1978) Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. ) is
one of the most important solana ceous vegetable crops grown
worldwide under outdoor and indoor conditions. It has become an
important commercial crop so far as the area, production,
industrial values and its contribution to human nutrition is
concerned. During the past few decades tremendous developments have
contributed to the knowledge and understanding of various areas of
genetics, breeding and biotechnology and voluminous literature has
been generated. The purpose of preparing this monograph is to give
a comprehensive up-to-date treatment to the various aspects of
genetic improvement of tomato. The emphasis has been placed on
cytology, classical and molecular genetics, reproductive biology,
germplasm resources, hybrid seed production, use of wild taxa,
selection/ breeding methods, breeding for abiotic and biotic
stresses, processing and quality breeding, improvement for
mechanical harvesting, and biotechnology: tissue culture,
protoplast fusion, and genetic transformation. These topics are
presented in 22 different chapters. However, a few aspects have
been discussed in more than one chapter. For example, seed
production is treated in chapters 1, 4 and 8; molecular
biology/genetic engineering in chapters 3 and 22 and heterosis in
chapters 8 and 16."
Dr. Anthony Kalloo and Dr. Jonathan M. Buscaglia have taken years
of experience at Johns Hopkins Hospital and created a collection of
unique and interesting cases revolving around gastrointestinal and
liver diseases.Complicated Cases in GI follows patient-physician
interactions and includes over 50 cases that are complex in their
nature, interesting in their presentations, or a representation of
a unique therapeutic challenge. Each chapter case includes:• A
detailed summary of a particular patient presentation• Associated
pathology slides, radiology films, or endoscopy photographs • A
brief evidence-based discussion focusing on the main learning
objectives• Three to five key learning points listed to highlight
the most important featuresComplicated Cases in GI also includes
150 board review-like questions taken directly from the cases
themselves. The questions highlight the salient aspects and are
meant to reinforce the learning objectives involved in each case.
They will also serve as a useful study aid for anyone preparing for
an examination in general medicine, gastroenterology or
hepatology.Complicated Cases in GI is ideal for residents, fellows,
practicing physicians preparing for recertification, nurses, and
students looking for a quick reference text that can be read and
absorbed over time—one case at a time.
Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) has the
potential to change the practice of surgery as we know it.
Proponents say advantages over laprascopic surgery include lower
anesthesia requirements, faster recovery and shorter hospital
stays, avoidance of transabdominal wound infections, less
immunosuppression, better postoperative pulmonary and diaphragmatic
function, and the potential for "scarless" abdominal surgery. In
this text/video set, the leading world expert in NOTES shares his
experience. Three sections cover fundamentals, current clinical
applications and techniques, and future perspectives.
This book has collaboration and translation at its heart: between
people, words and images, languages, cultures. The poems came
first, in Polish. Then came the photographic response to them. Then
four translators, MARTA DZIUROSZ, MARIA JASTRZEBSKA, DANUSIA STOK
and ELZBIETA WOJCIK-LEESE, took a set of 12 or 13 poems each and
translated them into English. All people involved were women: the
poet, the photographer, the four translators and the two editors.
Together they arrived at 51 Polish poems, 51 English poems and 51
photographs making this collection. They raise themes such as
cultural identity and migration, queerness, racism, isolation and
family memories.
