The aim of this book is to provide the reader with overviews of
certain international law issues which recently have been and
continue to be central on the international scene in the coming
years. These issues are subdivided in four parts: Part I, The Rise
of International Criminal Law and the Creation of the International
Criminal Court; Part II, Human Rights and International
Humanitarian Law in the Face of Terrorism; Part III, Aspects of
International Law of the Sea; and Part IV, Water in International
Law. Within this broad context, the book furthermore provides
insights into aspects which are of particular interest, e.g. piracy
in connection with 'International law of the Sea' or targeted
killings in connection with 'HR and IHL in the face of Terrorism.'
Examples of real-life problems are also laid out, e.g. those of the
Nile and the Tigris/Euphrates Rivers in relation to 'Water in
International Law.' The book will be of interest to professionals,
diplomats, international lawyers and legal advisers. Law students
will also benefit from it, particularly because the text is
combined with extensive references for further study.
This book includes an extended version of selected papers presented
at the 11th Industry Symposium 2021 held during January 7-10, 2021.
The book covers contributions ranging from theoretical and
foundation research, platforms, methods, applications, and tools in
all areas. It provides theory and practices in the area of data
science, which add a social, geographical, and temporal dimension
to data science research. It also includes application-oriented
papers that prepare and use data in discovery research. This book
contains chapters from academia as well as practitioners on big
data technologies, artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep
learning, data representation and visualization, business
analytics, healthcare analytics, bioinformatics, etc. This book is
helpful for the students, practitioners, researchers as well as
industry professional.
Degrowth Decolonization and Development reveals common underlying
cultural roots to the multiple current crises. It shows that
culture is an essential sphere to initiate fundamental changes and
solutions as it brings about transformative imaginaries on a
theoretical, political and practical level. The book focusses on
the interplay between culture and the environment, society and the
economy. It provides a critique of concepts associated with the
term âDevelopmentâ and reveals knowledge and theories outside
the comfort zone of the mainstream Western theoretical
landscape, which will certainly be instrumental in the
decolonization of both development theories and practices. The book
convincingly reveals the large array of domains, which, when
interpreted from a decolonization and Degrowth perspective, can be
managed through logics of environmental justice, social equity and
equality, and generate societally more desirable outcomes.Â
The book presents a multidisciplinary perspective on the
contemporary global crises and features interdisciplinary analyses
thereof through the lenses of cultural studies, critical
development studies, political economy, eco-feminist political
ecology, anthropology and sociology. Degrowth Decolonization and
Development unveils the fundamental role of the dichotomies
characterizing the Western modern development paradigm in shaping
todayâs actions, and especially the dichotomies of Global North
and Global South, Centre and Periphery, Developed and
Developing/Underdeveloped, Man and Nature. Degrowth Decolonization
and Development addresses all researchers and activists interested
in sustainability transformation and decolonization processes in
Development studies. Degrowth Decolonization and Development is
structured as a collection of seven original case studies. These
are authored by researchers who met when presenting their work in
Decolonization and Degrowth panels from the ISEE-ESEE-Degrowth
Conference, Manchester, July 5-8, 2021, and the 8th International
Degrowth Conference in The Hague, Netherlands, August 24-28, 2021.
The concluding chapter proposes a synthesis identifying key
concepts and steps in cultural change for the decolonization of the
Western worldview towards âpluriverseâ alternatives. The book
traces future imaginaries for modelling future new systemic
solutions and a needed radical change.
Contemporary Curating, Artistic Reference and Public Reception
undertakes a unique critical survey and analysis of prevailing
group exhibition-making practices in Europe, the UK and North
America. Drawing on curatorial literature and two in-depth case
studies of group exhibitions, Bertrand advocates for a mode of
curatorial practice that secures the content of artworks, in
contrast to prevailing open-ended, indeterminate approaches.
Proposing a third exhibition type beyond the current binary
exhibition ontology that opposes art historical narratives to
curatorial installations or Gesamtkunstwerk, the book directly
tackles the enduring critique of curating as a mediating activity
that produces sameness in group-exhibition contexts by establishing
artistic equivalences. The book relies on the principles of
analytical philosophy to assess how different exhibition-making
approaches fix reference and determine artistic reception,
reintroducing a standard to evaluate exhibitions beyond personal
taste and thematic coherence. Bertrand ultimately proposes an
alternative conception of practice that affirms the renewed
relevance of the institutional group show in the present context.
Contemporary Curating, Artistic Reference and Public Reception will
be of interest to academics, researchers and students working in
museum and curatorial studies, visual cultures, art theory and art
history programmes. Art theorists and critics, as well as curators
of contemporary art with a research-based practice, should also
find much to interest them within the pages of the book.
This book explores recent developments pointing towards a
âdomestic institutionalisation of human rightsâ, composed of
converging international trends prescribing the setting up of
domestic institutions, and the need for a national human rights
systems approach. Building on new compliance theories, innovative
arrangements have resolutely appeared around the turn of the
millennium and some are now legally enshrined in human rights
treaties. In their introduction, the editors capture these
developments, their main elements and key points of debate. They
outline a research agenda aimed at structuring and generating
further attention from both academics and practitioners. As a
stepping stone, the book singles out the purposeful attempt by the
United Nations and others to frame these trends around the concept
of âNational Human Rights Systemâ. The chapters assess various
models and cases put forward for such systems. Each chapter
highlights the specific forms of institutions being promoted and
their intended domestic interactions, and discusses how these
institutions are leveraged and strengthened by international
bodies. Authors critically review their implications for the future
of human rights, paving the way for additional research. The
chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue
of the Nordic Journal of Human Rights.
While bok choy is now a staple on Western grocery store shelves,
other Asian vegetables remain unknownâeven though theyâre
delicious, nutritious, and easy to grow in northern
climates. Caroline, Stéphanie, and Patricia Ho-Yi Wang,
three sisters of Cantonese descent, have made it their mission to
introduce gardeners, cooks, and vegetable lovers of all flavours to
wider sources of sustenance. Organized around fifteen Asian
vegetables that are presented according to the rhythm of the
seasons, this lush, full-colour book offers advice on growing and
harvesting organic crops intended for both weekend and commercial
gardeners, along with a host of ideas to preserve and prepare them,
including forty or so recipes, some of which have been developed by
renowned chefs. The Wang sisters complement the bookâs practical
advice by offering thoughts on Asian vegetables from a cultural
point of view and sharing the importance of these foods within
their own family, members of whom left China to immigrate to
Madagascar before settling in Québec. Asian Vegetables is a
generous and gorgeous tribute to good food, to the land, and the
importance of strong roots.
