The first critical editions and English translations of the two Syriac recensions of a fascinating text which narrates the story of a young Jewish child, Asher. After converting to Christianity and taking the name 'Abda da-Msiha ('slave of Christ'), he is martyred by his father. In a detailed introduction, Butts and Gross challenge the use of this text by previous scholars as evidence for historical interactions between Jews and Christians, reevaluating its purpose and situating the story in its Late Antique Babylonian context.

Semitic Languages in Contact contains twenty case studies analysing various contact situations involving Semitic languages. This edition of Mar Jacob of Sarug's (d. 521) homily on the Tower of Babel develops an extended word-play between "morduto" 'rebellion' and "marduto" 'discipline.' As is characteristic of Jacob, the characters, their personalities, and their motivations are developed far more than they are in the biblical narrative. The volume constitutes a fascicle of The Metrical Homilies of Mar Jacob of Sarug, which, when complete, will contain the original Syriac text of Jacob's surviving sermons, fully vocalized, alongside an annotated English translation.
