The #1 New York Times bestselling author of While Justice Sleeps
returns with another riveting and intricately plotted thriller, in
which a blackmailed federal judge, a secret court, and a brazen
murder may lead to an unprecedented national crisis. Supreme Court
clerk Avery Keene is back, trying to get her feet on solid ground
after unravelling an international conspiracy in While Justice
Sleeps. But as the sparks of Congressional hearings and political
skirmishes swirl around her, Avery is approached at a legal
conference by Preston Davies, an unassuming young man and fellow
law clerk to a federal judge in Idaho. Davies believes his boss,
Judge Francesca Whitner, was being blackmailed in the days before
she died. Desperate to understand what happened, he gives Avery a
file, a burner phone, and a fearful warning that there are highly
dangerous people involved. Another shocking murder leads Avery to a
list of names – all federal judges – and, alarmingly, all
judges on the FISA Court (the United States Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Court), also known as America’s "secret court." It
is this body which grants permission to the government to wiretap
Americans or spy on corporations suspected of terrorism. As Avery
digs deeper, she begins to see a frightening pattern – and she
worries that something far more sinister may be unfolding inside
the nation’s third branch of government. With lives at stake,
Avery must race the clock and an unexpected enemy to find the
answer. Drawn from today’s headlines and woven with her unique
insider perspective, Stacey Abrams combines twisting plotlines, wry
wit, and clever puzzles to create another immensely entertaining
suspense novel.
J.J. Abrams directs this seventh instalment of the epic sci-fi film
series in which Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill
reprise their roles from the original trilogy. Set 30 years after
'Return of the Jedi' (1983), the film follows Han Solo (Ford),
Princess Leia (Fisher) and new characters scavenger Rey (Daisy
Ridley), former stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega) and X-wing pilot
Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) as they face powerful forces from the
dark side in the form of First Order commander Kylo Ren (Adam
Driver) and his master Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis). The film
was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Original Score
(John Williams), Best Visual Effects and Best Editing.
Collection of two comedies. In 'No Strings Attached' (2011), when
long-time friends Emma (Natalie Portman) and Adam (Ashton Kutcher)
decide to add a physical dimension to their relationship and move
into 'friends with benefits' territory, they agree to keep things
strictly casual and on a 'no strings' basis. But before long both
of them find things becoming more complicated than planned as those
pesky emotions get in the way. In 'Morning Glory' (2010), a sparky,
ambitious young television producer spies an opportunity to claw
her way up the career ladder when she is offered a job on
'Daybreak', the worst-performing morning chat show in the ratings.
Her decision to hire veteran newscaster Mike Pomeroy (Harrison
Ford) to host the show meets with scepticism from network executive
Jerry (Jeff Goldblum) and co-host Colleen Peck (Diane Keaton), and
with little enthusiasm from Pomeroy himself, who is obliged by his
contract to take this less-than-promising gig. Can Becky overcome
the poor ratings and in-fighting to bring the team together and
transform the show into something to be proud of?

Gritty action thriller starring Cuba Gooding Jr. as a reporter

body of his girlfriend, crime journalist Lewis Hicks (Gooding)
finds a diary, seemingly left by the murderer, detailing a list of
his next victims and the gruesome methods he will use to kill them.
Realising his own name is on the list, Hicks must use all of his
experience to track down the serial killer in a desperate race
against time before the madman strikes again.
Le Levite d'Ephraim, Rousseau's re-imagining of the final chapters
of the Book of Judges, contains major themes of Rousseau's oeuvre
and lays forth central concerns of his intellectual projects. Among
the themes highlighted in the concentrated narrative are: the
nature of signs and symbols and their relationship to the
individual and society that produce them; the role of hospitality
in constituting civil society; the textually-displayed moral
disorder as foreshadowing political revolution; and finally, the
role of violence in creating a unified polity. In Le Levite
d'Ephraim, Rousseau explores the psychological and communal
implications of violence and, through them, the social and
political context of society. The incarnation of violence on the
bodies of the women in this story highlights the centrality of
women in Rousseau's thought. Women are systematically dismembered,
both literally and figuratively, and this draws the reader's
attention to the significance of these women as they are
perennially re-membered inside and outside the text. This study of
these themes in Le Levite d'Ephraim places it in relation to the
biblical text at its origins and to Rousseau's own writings and
larger cultural concerns as he grapples with the challenges of
modernity.
Double-bill of big-budget spin-offs of the classic 1960s sci-fi
adventure series created by Gene Roddenberry. In 'Star Trek'
(2009), the film chronicles the early years in the life of James T.
Kirk (Chris Pine) and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members,
including Kirk's enrolment at Starfleet Academy, his first meeting
with Spock (Zachary Quinto) and their battles with time-travelling
Romulans from the future. Eric Bana, Winona Ryder and Simon Pegg
co-star, along with Leonard Nimoy, who reprises his role as the
older Spock. In 'Star Trek Into Darkness' (2013), Captain Kirk and
the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise are called back to Earth after a
devastating force from within their organisation leaves the planet
in chaos and Starfleet in pieces. Determined to settle the score,
Kirk embarks on a manhunt with the rest of his crew including
Spock, Scotty (Pegg) and Chekov (Anton Yelchin) to find the party
responsible before their whole world is laid to waste.

A powerful, stirring yet utterly down-to-earth story with an
unforgettable message about anger, compassion and forgiveness.
Based on a true story from the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu's
childhood, Desmond and the Very Mean Word depicts an incident in a
South African town. While proudly riding his new bicycle, young
Desmond is rudely insulted by some neighbourhood boys - and at
first he responds angrily. But he's troubled to find that
retaliation brings him no relief, and he can't stop thinking about
the mean things the boys said to him. With the aid of the kindly
Father Trevor, Desmond arrives at a better understanding of his
feelings and learns that true forgiveness comes from within - and
arises when you choose to regard all people with compassion,
whether or not they say they are sorry. A beautiful tale of
forgiveness, as well as a lesson about how to handle bullying and
feelings of anger, embarrassment and revenge, this is a vibrantly
illustrated, deeply warm-hearted story.

How the College Board's emphasis on standardized testing has led
the AP program astray. Every year, millions of students take
Advanced Placement (AP) exams hoping to score enough points to earn
college credit and save on their tuition bill. But are they getting
a real college education? The College Board says that AP classes
and exams make the AP program more accessible and represent a step
forward for educational justice. But the program's commitment to
standardized testing no longer reflects its original promise of
delivering meaningful college-level curriculum to high school
students. In Shortchanged, education scholar Annie Abrams uncovers
the political and pedagogical traditions that led to the program's
development in the 1950s. In revealing the founders' intentions of
aligning liberal arts education across high schools and colleges in
ways they believed would protect democracy, Abrams questions the
collateral damage caused by moving away from this vision. The AP
program is the College Board's greatest source of revenue, yet its
financial success belies the founding principles it has abandoned.
Instead of arguing for a wholesale restoration of the program,
Shortchanged considers the nation's contemporary needs. Abrams
advocates for broader access to the liberal arts through robust
public funding of secondary and higher education and a dismantling
of the standardized testing regime. Shortchanged illuminates a
better way to offer a quality liberal arts education to high school
students while preparing them for college.
The writing of letters and the rise of the novel provided a way for
some women to express themselves at a time when the all-male French
Academy defined the very parameters of French literary
acceptability and tradition. Women who were consigned to convents,
workhouses or prisons were in most respects deprived of agency, yet
many found ways to respond to the legal documents served against
them. The letters and associated materials preserved in their legal
files provide evidence that these women did not remain quiet, as
they found means to resist authority. The forensic storytelling
examined in this book supports the conclusion that the documents
written in these constrained circumstances have both historical and
literary merit and form the core of an understudied genre of
literature.

The music that would come to be known as hip-hop was born at a
party in the Bronx in the summer of 1973. Now, fifty years later,
it's the most popular music genre in America. Just as jazz did in
the first half of the twentieth century, hip-hop and its
groundbreaking DJs and artists-nearly all of them people of colour
from some of America's most overlooked communities-pushed the
boundaries of music to new frontiers, while transfixing the
country's youth and reshaping fashion, art, and even language. And
yet, the stories of many hip-hop pioneers and their individual
contributions in the pre-Internet days of mixtapes and word of
mouth are rarely heard-and some are at risk of being lost forever.
Now, in The Come Up, the New York Times bestselling author Jonathan
Abrams offers the most comprehensive account so far of hip-hop's
rise, a multi-decade chronicle told in the voices of the people who
made it happen. In more than three hundred interviews conducted
over three years, Abrams has captured the stories of the DJs,
executives, producers, and artists who both witnessed and
themselves forged the history of hip-hop. Masterfully combining
these voices into a seamless symphonic narrative, Abrams traces how
the genre grew out of the resourcefulness of a neglected population
in the South Bronx, and from there how it flowed into New York
City's other boroughs, and beyond-from electrifying live
gatherings, then on to radio and vinyl, below to the Mason-Dixon
Line, west to Los Angeles through gangster rap and G-funk, and then
across generations. Abrams has on record Grandmaster Caz detailing
hip-hop's infancy, Edward "Duke Bootee" Fletcher describing the
origins of "The Message," DMC narrating his role in introducing
hip-hop to the mainstream, Ice Cube recounting N.W.A's breakthrough
and breakup, Kool Moe Dee recalling his Grammys boycott, and
countless more key players. Throughout, Abrams conveys with
singular vividness the drive, the stakes, and the relentless
creativity that ignited one of the greatest revolutions in modern
music. The Come Up is an exhilarating behind-the-scenes account of
how hip-hop came to rule the world-and an essential contribution to
music history.
